An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides support, care, and assistance to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often provide assistance with transit and appointments, help with daily activities, and care supervision. In some cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or “aging in place”. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, supervised personal care, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and medication management. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: personal care, administration of medication, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and reporting requirements and documentation. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
