An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, care, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer help with transit and appointments, opportunities for social activity, and help with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or dementia care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, medication supervision and administration, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: personal care, supervision, first-aid, and residents rights and responsibilities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, medication management, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
