Overall experience was great! The staff was amazing! I really cant complain about anything! The facility was clean. It could use some updating (new carpet and some fresh paint) but That's just normal wear and tear. It didn't smell of urine or anything. (As I found in other places) Staff was amazing! Quality of care was excellent. Meals seemed ok Activities were always available. A little on the expensive side I think. But overall for what you get its worth it.

How people pay for memory care in Dayton

Determining how to finance memory care can seem overwhelming, but understanding the various payment options can provide clarity and guidance. Whether it’s through private payment methods, VA benefits, Medicaid, or Medicare, there are several options available to support the cost of memory care in Dayton.

The following sections will detail financial resources available in Dayton, providing you with the knowledge and tools to make financing memory care for your loved one a little bit easier.

Private pay methods

Paying for a memory care facility in Dayton is most commonly done through private pay methods. These methods utilize a variety of income sources such as savings, Social Security benefits, pensions, and returns on investments made over one’s lifetime.

It’s also not uncommon for families to consider selling a house to cover care costs. This strategy can unlock significant funds to assist with the expenses of Dayton memory care facilities. For those who wish to hold onto their property, a reverse mortgage could be a solution, allowing homeowners to convert a portion of their home equity into funds for care.

For those who have been proactive in their planning, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) can provide a source of tax-advantaged funding. Similarly, the payout from a life insurance policy or benefits from long-term care insurance can greatly assist in managing the costs of memory care.

Each of these private payment options offers different benefits and drawbacks. It’s crucial to consider each carefully, taking into account your loved one’s needs, financial situation, and future planning. The following articles offer additional insight into private pay options:

Understand Ohio laws and regulations for memory care facilities

Memory care facilities in Dayton, Ohio, operate under certain laws and regulations designed to ensure quality care for residents. They are considered a specialized type of assisted living and follow all regulations for assisted living with additional guidelines specific to memory care.

Ohio’s assisted living and memory care facilities must be licensed. The Bureau of Regulatory Operations at the Ohio Department of Health oversees this licensing process, ensuring all facilities meet the stringent requirements set forth in the state’s regulations.

Regular inspections and reports

In Ohio, the Department of Health conducts regular, unannounced inspections of all residential care facilities, including memory care communities. Each facility undergoes at least one inspection during a nine- to 15-month cycle. During these inspections, all aspects of care and services are evaluated based on the state’s laws and regulations.

Inspection reports are made publicly available, providing a layer of transparency for families seeking the best care for their loved ones. You can request an inspection report online at the Ohio Department of Health’s Long-Term Care Consumer Guide website. Find the facility you are looking for first, and then visit the Ohio Department of Health’s Provider Report and Information Extract to access specific information on nursing facilities or residential care facilities.

Staffing and training standards

While Ohio’s laws do not set a minimum staff-to-patient ratio, they require that enough staff be on hand to meet the total care needs of residents. When skilled nursing care is offered, which is the case at 25% of our partner facilities, a licensed nurse must always be on call. Additionally, if medication is administered at the facility, a licensed health care professional, such as a registered nurse, a physician, or a licensed practical nurse trained in medication administration, must be on duty.

Staff members are also mandated to receive comprehensive training. This training includes orientation, securing emergency assistance, learning facility procedures, and understanding residents’ rights. In addition, all staff members must participate in eight hours of continuing education annually, and administrators must complete nine hours.

Specialized training is required for those caring for residents with late-stage cognitive impairment, behavioral issues, or serious mental illness. Within 14 days of starting in their positions, staff members must complete two hours of training, with an additional four hours of annual continuing education.

Resident health assessments and care plans

A thorough resident health assessment must be performed on or before admission and updated annually or when there is a significant change in the resident’s condition. These assessments are conducted by licensed health professionals and cover a wide range of domains, including medical diagnoses, psychological history, cognitive status, and the need for skilled nursing services.

Facilities may establish a risk agreement with a resident or their responsible person in some situations. This agreement ensures shared decision-making and implementation responsibilities, with the facility also agreeing to identify any risks associated with a resident’s decision to refuse a particular service.

COVID-19 regulations for Dayton memory care communities

Memory care facilities in Dayton generally follow the guidelines created by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) as Dayton has no specific mandates. However, each facility may have specific safety precautions in place for their community, so it is important to contact the facility you are interested in to confirm their regulations.

In general, the most up-to-date information can be found on both the CDC website and Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health website.

Vaccinations. Getting vaccinated, including booster shots, is advised for COVID-19 as per CDC guidelines.

Masking. Wearing a mask is advised for those who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, have tested positive, or have come into contact with someone who has tested positive.

Facility cleanliness and staff safety. To maintain safe and healthy communal spaces, facilities are taking necessary measures, such as proper ventilation and frequent sanitization of high-touch surfaces.

What to expect from memory care living in Dayton

When you begin your search for memory care in Dayton, it’s essential to know what to expect from the facilities in the area. Dayton’s memory care landscape provides a diverse array of options, making it well-equipped to cater to various needs and preferences.

The variety of memory care facilities

A Place For Mom partners with 16 facilities within a 10-mile radius of downtown Dayton, offering you a wide variety of choices. Nine facilities are a combination of assisted living and memory care facilities, while five are progressive care centers that offer assisted living, independent living, and memory care under one roof. These combination facilities can be valuable as they provide residents with the possibility of smoothly transitioning between levels of care as their needs evolve.

For those seeking specialized care, we partner with two memory care facilities that focus exclusively on residents with memory impairments, offering tailored services and programs.

Comprehensive services and amenities

Dayton’s memory care communities take a holistic approach to resident care, offering a suite of services and amenities designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals living with memory impairments. You can expect all facilities to provide staff that will have someone awake and ready to help at all times, ensuring your loved ones receive round-the-clock care. Most of our partner memory care facilities offer specialized memory care training for staff, ensuring they’re equipped with the latest techniques to provide the best care.

Our memory care partners in Dayton go beyond simply addressing medical needs. Dayton’s facilities are designed with the aim of offering a fulfilling lifestyle for residents, with libraries, fitness centers, arts and crafts centers, cafes, or bistros in almost all of our partner facilities. Additionally, many facilities provide transportation services, offering either complimentary or at-cost transportation so you don’t have to worry about how your loved one is going to get to appointments.

Security and focused health care

Dayton’s memory care facilities are highly committed to addressing the unique health challenges associated with memory loss. They provide extensive medical and therapeutic support, with an on-call doctor and visiting occupational, physical, and speech therapists available at nearly all of our partner facilities. Several memory care facilities also provide full medication management, ensuring residents’ medication routines are accurately maintained.

Understanding the nature of memory conditions, Dayton’s memory care facilities prioritize safety. A majority operate as secured communities with WanderGuard or similar systems. They also offer specific care for a variety of behaviors associated with memory loss, including anxiety, aggression, and exit-seeking behaviors.

Memory care communities in Dayton are designed with compassion, expertise, and a deep understanding of the complexities of memory loss. While each community is unique, they all share a common goal: to provide a safe, engaging, and comfortable environment for your loved ones.
