Oakwood Village Assisted Living in Zachary, LA
4.9

Oakwood Village was warm and welcoming to my mom. The staff were upbeat and helpful during the transition. This includes the aides, nurses, and housekeeping staff. The residents are happy and very friendly. The overall atmosphere is great. Mom loves the food and the staff are very accommodating when she chooses to eat in her room at times. The activities are entertaining with routine outings available to the residents. Mom continually says that if you need to live in assisted living then this is the place to be.

The Claiborne at Baton Rouge
3.8

The Claiborne is a beautiful but huge facility. It offers a lot for the independent. Residents have to be able to walk a good distance just to eat. We had to get her a scooter. It's also on the higher end cost.Claibornes assisted living is fine. You just have to find what fits the resident best.

The Pearl at Jamestown in Baton Rouge, LA
4.5

I would recommend this facility -all staff are friendly and helpful. The move in process was as good as could be expected under circumstances-clean facility -housekeeping comes at least twice a week, or as often as needed. The entertainment is great. One thing that is better to me and brings me comfort is that they have nurses on staff over night, some facilities do not.

Understand Baton Rouge laws and regulations for nursing homes

Nursing home facilities in Louisiana must be licensed by the Louisiana Department of Health via inspections by the Office of State Fire Marshall and by the Office of Public Health as well as disclosure of owners with 5% or greater ownership. A nursing home is defined as a private home or institution in which multiple residents receive necessary personal care and nursing.

Some memory care facilities in our listings will also come under the “nursing facilities” umbrella and be inspected as such, but facilities may have additional guidelines for the provision of memory care, more specifically. For example, a nursing facility with an Alzheimer’s Special Care Unit must have designated, secure areas and pathways to protect memory care patients.

Full standards for licensed nursing facilities can be found here. They include rules for regular inspections, for informing and communicating with residents, for the delivery of care and 24-hour security, and much more.

Regulations for Assisted Living and Memory Care Facilities

Memory care facilities are grouped as a specialized form of assisted living. Assisted living facilities also require a license from the Health Standards Section (HHS) of the Louisiana Department of Health. Once licensed, these communities are categorized as adult residential care providers. Because of this category, these facilities must then undergo inspections regularly. During these inspections, which occur once a year, the facility must prove that they have established the necessary systems, equipment, and protocols to provide adequate care to seniors, including standard health, safety, and cleanliness.

Additionally, facilities have to prove they can address the evolving requirements and preferences of residents by having developed care plans accordingly. For instance, they are required to offer 24-hour supervision and provide services and layouts that protect the dignity and privacy of their residents. They must also provide transportation for medical and personal appointments to residents who are unable to arrange their own means of transportation.

You can refer to the Department of Health website for even more detailed information. If you’d like to obtain inspection reports, you need to submit a public records request. The instructions on how to do so can be found here.

COVID-19 regulations for Baton Rouge nursing homes

While COVID-19 regulations are no longer mandated by law, long-term care facilities are advised to follow guidance set out by the CDC and the Louisiana Department of Health. Beyond these recommended guidelines, licensed facilities reserve the right to introduce additional measures to help protect their residents and visitors in the case of public health outbreaks. You can find full information on the guidelines covering the Baton Rouge area here.

Vaccinations. Vaccinations for COVID-19 are not required by law but are recommended for residents and staff of nursing facilities.

Masking. Staff and visitors of nursing facilities are advised to wear masks in certain scenarios, to prevent the spread of respiratory infection.

Facility cleanliness. Licensed nursing facilities are required by law to keep facilities and equipment clean and maintain a high level of cleanliness throughout living areas.

Social distancing. Government guidance suggests a social distance of at least six feet indoors to avoid close contact with people who are sick or COVID-positive without symptoms.

Quarantining. Isolation is highly recommended for anyone with COVID-19 symptoms or a positive test result, or anyone who has been in close contact with anyone with COVID-19.

What to expect from nursing homes in Baton Rouge

In A Place For Mom’s partner facilities, you will find homes and communities where seniors can receive care, whether that’s for a specific condition like Alzheimer’s or more general everyday care. Some come under the category of assisted living, others can be classed as memory care, and others are communities with dedicated, skilled nursing wings or departments. These are all frequently grouped under the term nursing home.

Let’s take a closer look at the different types of care communities available:

  • Memory care facilities: These facilities primarily serve individuals with memory-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Assisted living facilities: These facilities cater to seniors who require some assistance, but do not need 24-hour nursing care. Some seniors who move into assisted living facilities anticipate potentially needing skilled nursing care in the future.
  • Independent living facilities: Seniors who are self-sufficient and only need occasional assistance may prefer to live in independent living facilities instead of living in a standalone apartment or home. These facilities are part of a larger community.

In assisted living facilities, seniors can anticipate receiving exceptional care and assistance. They can rely on services such as 24-hour security, on-call care, specialized nursing care, and visits from physicians. This ensures that residents feel secure, knowing that their community can provide them with the necessary support to handle any possible challenges they may face. Some facilities have different areas that they specialize in. For example, from our list of memory care and assisted living partners, 88% of them specialize in memory care.

A facility to match your care needs

Assisted living and memory care facilities in our listings offer a high level and quality of care. Of our nine listings, five are a combination of assisted living and memory care, three are a combination of assisted living and independent living, and one is standalone memory care. If you wish to go outside the market radius, within 20 miles, there are two additional facilities classified as assisted living/memory care/independent living.

The facilities that offer a combination of care give you the opportunity to customize the care experience for your loved one. A senior may need 24-hour supervision or simply regular nurse visits. They may require an onsite physician, which is available at some facilities, or their needs may be satisfied by having a great local clinic where they can go for primary care. No matter their individual needs, there will be a facility within our network that can help.

Extra amenities and community benefits

In Baton Rouge, care is the foundation of an assisted living or memory care experience, but there is a lot more for seniors and their families to discover. Extra services and amenities can make life a little sweeter. Time spent outdoors is crucial for well-being, and all of our in-network facilities house outdoor seating and walking areas. Amenities allow residents to connect with their passions and hobbies. BBQs, picnics, gardening clubs, accessible yoga – whatever your loved one is into, you can find it in these senior care facilities.
