I thought Southside Gardens was nice. I think it would be great for independent living, but not as good for assisted living or memory care. The main limitation for us was they couldn't really accommodate my loved one if she were to need a higher level of care. It was also a much older facility than others we looked at.
Our family had an in person tour and the first time we came we would of given it a 4 out of 5 stars, but the second time it would be more like a 2. We saw fewer residents then the first tour and not more. They did not really seem to make efforts to update anything about the place. It felt more like a nursing home and not independent living. We just did not feel that cleanliness was there.
Read MoreI thought Southside Gardens was nice, but they had individual apartments for assisted living. With that setup, my loved one would just sit there by himself and not have interaction with other people. Also, if it rained, he would have had to go out in the rain to get the dining hall. And we didn't want that for him.
My loved one enjoys having an independent apartment and being able to enjoy the outside. She has her own porch where she can grow flowers, and she's raising tomatoes. She's able to enjoy her gardening, as opposed to being in a building with her room down a long hall like she's in a hotel. That's why she chose Southside. The staff have been very responsive to any needs or requests that she makes. Activities had to be cut back due to Covid, but they're improving lately. They recently just added bus trips back in. She's joined a community of other ladies with similar interests, so she's been keeping rather busy. She's in a card group and plays bingo, and is also in a prayer circle. So I feel she's integrated well into the community.

The people and the staff are really great. It's a good safe community the way it's set up. The community is located centrally in the city and has access to a lot of shopping, and shops. I would recommend this community to others.

A Place for Mom has scored Southside Gardens 7 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
