Skilled Nursing Care with Excellence and Grace

My mother suffered a very severe stroke and was unable, to talk, communicate in any way, move, eat or do anything for herself at all. The level of care she received at K-B was extraordinary. She was fed, bathed, changed, given medications, etc. But beyond that, she was treated like a person. She was taken to activities that she could watch but could not participate in. She was talked to while she could never respond. Staff took the time to change the TV channel to shows she enjoyed when she could never do this herself. There are no words to describe what that meant to me when I could not be there myself. My mother was at another facility prior to King Bruewaert and it was a totally different story. There she was ignored for 8 to 10 hours at a time, not changed, not showered and sometimes not even given prescribed medications. When we found K-B, it was an answer to a prayer. The nursing care is very good, but the personal caring and attention from staff is -- there are really no words to describe it. It's very difficult to care for people in these circumstances. Is it perfect? No. But concerns were addressed and K-B works closely with family to create good solutions. I don't feel any concern went unaddressed. That's all you can ask for. K-B staff cares for patients with kindness and grace. I am grateful that this place. Our mother has now passed, but I still think about K-B cared for my mother and am grateful.... Read more

Thanks to great staff

My Mom was in the skilled nursing facility for over three years, and the care was superb. The nursing staff are wonderful, we got to know them well. Yes, there is a resident who yells "Help" at all hours, and I saw the staff respond with kindness and compassion. There are a few residents who repeatedly push the call button, so the beeping is frequent. But the care is excellent. The facility does not allow tipping, instead having a holiday fund to which families are asked to contribute. We were always happy to help reward the wonderful people who were doing the difficult work of caring for our mother. I hope I can go to KB House when the time comes.

Look Beyond the Furnishings...

My loved one lived here, but no more. Many believe that this place is the best money can buy. The furnishings are nice, but don't be fooled. If you need memory care or skilled nursing...beware! Some (not all) nurses and aides are just awful. Patients' needs are often ignored and families who dare to complain are "subtly" retaliated against. Really. Nurses are very slow to respond to call buttons. I would frequently see call lights on for my entire visit. I often heard patients yelling, "help" with no response. On more than one occasion, I approached the nurse's station to let them know about a patient calling for help. The only response I ever got was a blank stare or a nod. They could have cared less. This is a very clannish group. They cover for each other no matter what. Also, better have deep pockets if you decide to place your loved one here. ALL families are expected to contribute to their employee Christmas fund, and if they don't like the amount you give...well, once again, you and your loved one pay the price. I wish someone had written an honest review of this place when I was searching. Do not be swayed by the lovely grounds and expensive furniture in the main house. In the end, it's about the level of medical care and attention that your loved one receives. Do NOT put someone that you care about here!

Response from King-Bruwaert House, a CCRC

March 14, 2019

We were very surprised to see this review. King-Bruwaert House, now celebrating its 85th anniversary, continues to be recognized as one of the finest continuing care communities in the Midwest. We have excellent staff-to-resident ratios that result in personalized care and service. Our staff understands the importance of being professional and courteous to our residents. We try to be responsive to individual needs and respect the important role that family members have in the lives of their loved ones. At K-B House, it is our policy to immediately address concerns when they are brought to our attention, such as staff being unresponsive or unwilling to be of assistance. In fact, we encourage regular conversations with our Senior Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, Unit Managers, and Social Worker to resolve any issues that may arise. Follow-up discussions ensure resolution to concerns. During our last Satisfaction Survey, 92% of residents and 88% of family members responded that they would recommend King-Bruwaert House to others. We take great pride in knowing that our professionalism and care are highly respected and shared with others. In our Skilled Nursing and Memory Care Units, we provide care for residents of varying degrees of cognition, which may not be well understood by all visitors. Repetition of words or phrases are common behaviors that require patience and understanding. Person-centered care is our paramount objective. On a separate note, King-Bruwaert House operates as a private, not-for-profit community that accepts donations throughout the year for our Annual Fund and other programs – but we would never expect anyone to make a contribution without their full support of our ideals and mission. Rather than share a negative review with readers, we would strongly encourage the writer of this commentary to contact our Senior Director of Nursing at [removed]. She would be happy to address any concerns.

Should have moved here sooner!

As a resident my husband and I are truly blessed to have found KB House. The staff is amazing...they treat us like royalty. The food is superb...comparable to a fine restaurant. We live in one of the townhouses and they deliver meals to our house piping hot and ready to eat. There is so much offered...including a garden that produces fresh vegetables that you can pop over and pick fresh. The one comment I hear from other residents is we should have moved here sooner. The folks here are outgoing and very friendly. My husband had a stay in health care and the nursing was caring and efficient.

It's a very good place.

It's a very good place. They have made a good effort to come and get her for activities. The dining room is big and gorgeous, with a fireplace, and cloth tables, that we saw on the walk through, but that's not where the memory care residents eat. It was a bit misleading, but other than that, they do a good job with her.

A Treasure

My mother was a resident of KB for 13 years and was treated with utmost respect and dignity. Their loving care coupled with the support she required medically allowed her to enjoy her later years. The food was wonderful and they come to know the preferences of each resident and anticipate their needs. The grounds are lovely and the house is beautifully maintained. Words simply are not adequate to describe this special place.

Disappointed

Beautiful place, but the staff is extremely rude to residents. On a bad day, they can range from patronizing to downright disrespectful. If you try to talk to anyone about it, you will be treated even worse.
