Assisted living communities provide oversight, recreational activities, and healthcare to individuals who are about 65 years of age or older. Kentucky has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, chores, laundry, and personal care services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident and functional needs assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions, confirming that medication is being taken by the resident for whom it is prescribed, and reading the medications label. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain training in a number of areas. These include: Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, adult first-aid, emergency procedures, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
