Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as personalized assistance. Services provided often include support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain situations, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These include: internal policies, choice, independence, and promotion of dignity. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and observing the resident. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, laundry, security, and medication reminders.
