The Canterbury House in Roxboro, NC
5.0

We chose Canterbury House because it is very close to our home so it makes it convenient. The staff is really friendly and very helpful. The appearance of the community is just very warm and welcoming. When we visited the community everyone was very welcoming and extremely friendly. We are very pleased with Canterbury House and would very highly recommend this community.

Brookdale Eden
3.9

The staff at Brookdale Eden are very kind and I think the care is what you would expect with the staff ratios in long term care. I am an RN, so I do note small details that someone who is not may not notice. I am also more understanding of how incredibly difficult their job is. Communication is great. The food could be better. There is pepper on the trays, but no salt, no butter for bread or mashed potatoes that don't have gravy. Mom has trouble chewing and swallowing and some things on the trays she obviously can not eat. Some of the CNAs could use some in-service education on the aging process, though they mean well. I would recommend Brookdale Eden. I think it is the best available in this area.

The Oaks of Alamance in Burlington, NC

I would recommend this community to others. If there is no follow up by phone Dustin takes care of the issues and then will sometimes follow ups via email.

Nursing Homes

A nursing home is an establishment that houses two or more seniors who are not related by marriage or by blood to the administrator. A nursing home facility offers its residents 24-hour care administered by on-site nurses. These caregivers offer healthcare services for people who cannot care for themselves.

This type of facility is a convenient and comfy care option for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will often take in individuals 55 and greater which is for other senior care types. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include personal reading materials, special care services not included in the facility’s Medicaid payment, and cosmetic and grooming items. The most common mental condition experienced by residents of nursing homes is dementia, which can cloud their decision making capacities, and familiarity, and memory function. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to spend time with visitors, participate in activities, form or participate in resident groups, and exercise your rights as a U.S. citizen. Many occupants of nursing homes may have behavioral troubles, which can consist of verbal outbursts, resisting care, or a tendency to wander. A significant number of nursing home residents are individuals who have incontinence issues, experience difficulty with hearing and seeing, have mental or physical disabilities, or require assistance with daily tasks such as bathing.
