Newtown, Pennsylvania has a rich history you can explore, too. Visit The Court Inn, also known as the Half-Moon Inn, built in 1733. The staff at the Birches is compassionate and friendly towards my mom in the memory care unit. They meet mom 'Where she is" each day. If she doesn't won't to change into clothes, they encourage her but never force her to get dressed. It may take 3-4 time before she agrees.

The Birches ratings would be higher if training and oversight of the care staff were improved. I would recommend this community to other families but but ask a lot of questions about quality of recruiting, training and oversight of care delivery staff. I go directly to staff with concerns and have found them responsive.

Response from The Birches at Newtown
August 15, 2024Hello and thank you for your review! I ask that you reach out to me at your earliest convenience so we can talk more about the dining experience. My direct line is 267-291-3902
New staff several in the past months, I'm not really familiar with them. Bad news [name removed] their director of memory care left last week. Big loss to them. We toured several different facilities, and I would highly recommend The Birches at Newtown.

The facility is beautiful, staff is great with the exception of nighttime and evening staff. They are slow to respond when called if they respond at all. They are understaffed and no supervisor to contact when and aid is non responsive.

[name removed] and her staff did a great job caring for my uncle in the memory care unit. He was there for only a few weeks before he passed. The facility was clean and the staff was pleasant. He ended up in hospice and the coordination of teams was good.

More attention could be given to vacuuming rooms and pt hallways. Other than that - good. The staff members are very friendly. The care is good but we had a little bump when several of the residents were diagnosed with COVID. Staff needed to attend to Covid positive patients, delaying care to others. Somewhat understandable. LPN could be more responsive. Dining is very good. Staff awesome. Go out of way to help. Food "bland" per mom but that could be her need for more seasoning. The activities are very good. Christmas show was fabulous - mom loved it. PT and OT are superb. [name removed] nurse practitioner is very thorough and accommodating - grateful for her.

Response from The Birches at Newtown
January 17, 2024Thank you so much for the review and kind words. Please know that our goal is always to provide 5-Star quality care and services, so we will share your comments regarding areas to improve with our team. Specifically related to meals, we do cook with very little salt, but if your mom has a favorite seasoning, please let us know and we can make it available to her!
I would not recommend The Birches at Newtown for a family member that has a high level of care needs with regards to ADLs. My mother came in at level 4 and they were not staffed well enough to meet her needs timely. The food was good. The activities were okay. I didn't see any outings offsite, as advertised, in 2 months there. Housekeeping was fine. Not a good fit for Assisted Living with high level of mental faculties. My mom found it hard to connect with most of the other residents.

The birches staff have been excellent in the care and oversight of both my parents. Their compassion was beyond words during my father's final days. They continue to provide my mom with support, friendship and loving care.

A Place for Mom has scored The Birches at Newtown 9.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
