A move for Mom

After visiting a number of Assisted Living facilities My choice was The Arbors East in Islandia. I’ve been asked, “ What helped me make the decision?”. I would like to say it is a very difficult decision to make for anyone, but specially my 100+ year old mom whose mind is good, but body is changing. The Arbors East is welcoming from the start. All employees are hands on, knowing individuals names and needs. If one is “social” and wants to participate in activities, they are available. Time spent in your room is doable with staff members checking in or inviting one to a soon-to-be activity. Mom will say the food is good and plentiful. Mom’s room is comfortable. When checking other Assisted Living facilities there were additional charges for a number of items (cable, additional medications, telephone…). Most items are included. Fingers crossed that mom continues to thrive here.... Read more

New lease on life

Before coming to the Arbors my mom was in a state of depression. She was literally wasting away both emotionally and physically. Living at the Arbors has renewed her zest for life. Her self esteem has sky rocketed and she enjoys each new day with friends and a happy outlook.

A positive, supportive, friendly and clean environment

The living spaces and common areas are clean and comfortable and routine care is obvious. My mother has been pleased with menu and meals. The staff is friendly and they do exhibit patience and tolerance toward my less than patient mother. The care is consistent from what I have observed, with physician visits, routine medicine distribution and personable attention to residents. Residents are encouraged to interact and are helped to be tolerant of the many different personalities that exist in that environment. I have observed engaging and thought provoking activities. In house activities keep residents busy throughout the day and organized trips off site are frequent. It has been a rejuvenating experience for my mother and a relief for me.

Moms life at the Arbors

My mom seems very happy at the Arbors. She says she is always busy and has made many friends. She is kept active and enjoys going out to lunch with some of the staff from time to time. I feel comfortable knowing she is happy. She also met a gentleman friend who is a veteran and is very happy having him asa companion.

Overall things are good

Mom is ok with the food. Mom seems to be more outgoing and interacting more. She does enjoy a few of the activities offered. They do offer a few different activities on the east side and mom is able to go over and participate in some of them. The staff is accommodating. Mom is on the west side and the building has a friendly layout for residents with memory issues. Everything is in a loop and on the same floor. I would recommend this community.

The Apartment Set Up

The semi-private room we were shown did not have a dividing wall and the size was smaller than we had hoped for. The community was very nice and they have two different sections from what we saw on our tour.

I toured the West facility and was impressed by how beautiful and clean it is. There are many activities scheduled for the residents and several lovely areas to sit and visit. The dining room is very attractive and on the day I visited the menu consisted of several nice choices. I saw a few of the staff members while on tour and their interactions with the residents; all seemed respectful and pleasant. The overall atmosphere of the facility is one of comfort and home. I did not at all feel as if I were in an institution while I was there. I thought the plan was well thought out; my first impression is that the first priority of those who work here is the care and happiness of the people who live here.

Friendly Staff!!

The staff at this community where excellent, they made sure to give my loved one and I a detailed tour of there facility and gave us lots of great information. It was one of our favorite tours that we had taken. The floor plan is open with lots of great amenities for all of the residents. The location was just a little for my family and I to drive everyday.

Good Tour Overall of This Community

This is a nice community, and my tour of went well. The community was well-kept from what I saw. The staff was kind to family, and myself. The experience went well overall, but it wasn't the community for my father.

Care for family

I like the care here for my mom. The staff is very nice. We find that the community to be clean and maintained. They need more activities for the residents. The menu could use some small improvments . We would over all recommend this community to other families.

A lovely place, huge rooms. This place was previously a Marriott ten years ago. The room are really hotel style, nice furniture. Well organized. Three levels of care, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Concierge. Concierge is a level between regular Assisted and Memory Care. All the bells and Whistles.

Not good

Most front desk and some wellness staff are friendly and helpful. Many, including those in management, are not. The activities staff are friendly and caring and the activities are adequate. However, the overall management and care are unacceptable. At first glance, the place appears clean. However, the shared bathrooms (used by guests as well as residents) often smell horribly and are often soiled with fecal matter and urine. Housekeeping does not keep up well with cleaning in both private rooms (the few that I've been able to observe) and in some shared spaces. Wellness has made a series of different errors (some with serious consequences). Showering and dressing assistance are inconsistent and inadequate, resulting in poor hygiene and health concerns. Any concerns brought up to management are not addressed in a timely nor a professional manner. Calls and emails are not returned. Questions and concerns (including immediate health/safety issues) are not taken seriously nor addressed adequately. "Promises" to fix issues related to showering, dressing, laundry, wellness, health/safety, roommates, etc. are not kept. Over and over again the same issues arise. Employeee and management turnover rate is high. There is serious lack of communication among and between staff members. It's sad that people entrust their loved ones to a place that on the surface looks great, paying 4-star prices for 1-star service.

The best choice we could have made!

We are very happy with this community. Mom loves being here. Mom has gotten involved with the singing, the bingo and some of the other activities. Mom has become more social. She loves the food and the dining. The community is always clean and that is a bonus. We picked here because they came highly recommended by some of our friends.

Phenomenal place to be!

This place is absolutely awesome. I could not be more pleased. They are excellent at everything. The food is delicious and dad licks the plate clean. The staff does a great job taking care of dad. He was having some issues transitioning, but now everything is fine. I can't say enough good things about this place. They are phenomenal. When me and my wife need a place to go this is where it will be.

Friendly Nice Community

For the most part everything is going pretty well for my mother here at this community. They are caring for her and her needs very well. The community is clean and well-kept. The staff have been very friendly and nice. They do a have a nice variety of activities for the residents to participate in. They also have nice outings outside the community. We are having some roommate issues, but hopefully we can get the resolved. It is a very nice community, and I would recommend it.

Gratitude Long Overdue

When it becomes clear that your loved one can no longer live independently it can be an overwhelming experience. My search for an Assisted Living Residence began with A Place for Mom and their courteous, and helpful assistance. They guided me through the process of choosing a residence best suited to the needs of my Mom and myself. The first place I visited was The Arbors at Islandia-West. Upon arrival, I noted the "bed and breakfast" feel of the residence. It was here that I was provided with all the information I needed to make an informed decision with compassion and understanding of the emotions that go along with leaving your loved one in the care of others. I visited and investigated several other adult residences in my area, but was continually drawn back to The Arbors at Islandia-West. I knew deep down inside from the beginning it was the best fit for my Mom. My Mom became a resident at The Arbors at Islandia -West in January of 2015! The residence itself is very well maintained. I have found the entire staff at The Arbors-West is friendly, patient, kind and attentive towards it's residents. The Doctors that provide their services are very good and make themselves available to any questions or concerns about the care of your loved one. I am certain my Mom is safe in their care. My Mom is very happy at The Arbors at Islandia-West and participates in many of the activities they have to offer. After all, her happiness is all that matters!
