After touring several retirement communities in Columbus, Ohio, I chose First Community Village for several reasons: Its convenient location and beautiful setting in a lovely residential area; the well-appointed apartments, convenient amenities, and variety of floor plans; the community’s appealing ambience of friendly and very welcoming staff and residents in addition to its attractively landscaped walking paths. When Ohio was forced to shut down because of the Covid-19 pandemic, forward-thinking implementation of precautionary measures kept residents safe without the implementation of stifling restrictions. When considering a move to First Community Village, I suggest making an appointment with a FCV marketing staff person, touring several apartments and the Village’s impressive facilities, talking to residents, and asking lots of questions.... Didn't care for six figure payment policy toward rent. Didn't care for $375.00 monthly food allowance with prices on menu. Location undesirable. One bedroom apt unacceptably too small.

They were a three. Historically they had high marks but we had a terrible experience. The first day she was there she fell and they blamed her for trying to get up. They didn't have her in the right wheelchair and they didn't have it locked. She fell and hit her head. She fell again, which caused bleeding on her brain, so the state went out to investigate. Another day we found her stuck between the bed and the wall. There were a lot of things. They weren't adequately trained to put her sling on. She had surgery on her shoulder and they couldn't put her arm in the sling and it was always hanging out of the sling. One day we found that her pills had fallen and were stepped on, so she didn't get her meds. There were always excuses. Great looking facility. Very poorly managed.

The nurses are very good about calling me when there has been a change in my mother's routine, medication, or behavior. The nurses and aides are friendly and calm, even when redirecting residents who become confused or angry. Cleanliness is average; when in a shared room, clothes are easily mixed up. My mother lost two hearing aides. Be aware that after new renovations (2014), there will no longer be a secured (locked) unit for residents who try to leave. I was told my mother must find another facility because she does try to leave and there will be no safe place for her. This has been upsetting to the family. There is a disconnect between administrative decisions and family. The activities directors work very hard to offer all residents a variety of interesting choices. They always welcomed my granddaughters to join in any activity. My mother has been there two years, and almost all the staff know her, smile when they see her, and call her by name.

We did a tour back in September and really liked the facility but was a little farther than where my mother wants to be.

Seems like a very nice a & caring place, unfortunately they require that you guarantee that she has 4 years worth of private funding before Medicaid takes over. Which would be approx $350K. Very disappointing.

It was very nice but it was just too expensive for my mother-in-law.

I guess any place you go you always hate paying all that money but I think they've been very good. My mother-in-law has only been there like 3 months so we're all sort of still settling in. We were just notified that we're going to have a care of action place. I think that's wonderful. A lot of places don't do that. We get a lot of communications from them regarding how my mother-in-law is doing. I just got a letter from them today asking if it was okay for her to participate in a new activity so they keep us up to date on what they're doing. The physical therapy and occupational therapy are coninuting right there. It's nice that they have so many things available there. She's getting her eyes checked by a doctor there. It's good because I don't have to take her out for those things and these doctors are used to dealing with older people.

I was impressed with the physical appearance of this community and the people I have spoken to. I am concerned as I was approached by a co-worker who has a relative there who is not happy with the care her loved one is receiving.

Mom doesn't need a suite. Three separate dining rooms, family style. Young woman who took me on the tour seemed uninterested in me. Lots of apparently rich white women, or those with wealthy families. Too bad because it's across the street.

A Place for Mom has scored First Community Village, a CCRC 2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
