An assisted living community is a residential community which administers care, supervision, and support to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with the activities of daily life, aid with transportation and appointments, and care supervision. In some cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing care, or continuing care. The state of Wisconsin has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) certifies this community type. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include fire safety, community policies and procedures, provision of personal care, and standard precautions. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, transportation, activity programming for persons with dementia, and independent living skills. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided.
