Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, care, and support to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain instances, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or nursing. The state of Texas has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, general supervision or oversight, supervision or direct administration of medications, and personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: basic principles of management, resident and provider rights and responsibilities, assisted living standards, and resident characteristics (including dementia). This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record.
