Assisted living facilities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as personalized help. The types of service provided often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, facilities may offer dementia care, nursing, or hospice. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $67,680 . Massachusetts maintains specific standards associated with this type of facility. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs regulates this type of facility. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with activities of daily living , and timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include management of self-administered medications, reminding residents to take medications, and reading the medication label to residents. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: resident bill of rights, communication skills, financial exploitation, and Resident health. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of allergies and dietary needs, assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, and assessment of residents ability to manage medications. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include facilities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, facilities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily, a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, and qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program.
