An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, aid, and care to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, hospice, or nursing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds . This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: housekeeping and sanitation procedures, psychosocial aspects of aging, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, and resident supervision. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program.
