Nursing Homes

A nursing home is a complex that houses at least two persons who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of residence offers its inhabitants around-the-clock care by on-site nurses. These caregivers offer personal care, maintenance and other health related services for people who cannot care for themselves.

This type of facility is a convenient and easy care alternative for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will frequently admit individuals 55 and above which is unusual for other senior care types.Often times individuals may decide life in a nursing home over another type of facility due to a mental or physical condition that makes it difficult for them to accomplish their lifestyle goals. Some services come at an extra cost which can include personal clothing, cosmetic and grooming items, and personal comfort items. Nursing homes are required to provide medically-related social services, a professionallly directed program of activities, room and bed maintenance services, and emergency dental services to residents. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to spend time with visitors, have protections against involuntary transfer or discharge, get proper medical care, and be free from discrimination. Many residents tend to be single women with circles of support, and almost 50% of nursing home residents are older than 85 years old.
