This is more specific to my situation, but I think in situations like mine where I was putting my mother there because I was 800 miles away, I would have liked to call and get updates on her easier, but I also understand that my mom made it difficult for staff to do that. Also, I wish they would have been a little more bluntly honest with me. I knew my mom was causing some headaches, and I wish they would have just told me. They wouldn't have hurt my feelings and I wouldn't have been offended, I know she can be a handful. However, without anyone telling me, I wasn't able to address it 1-on-1 with my mom. All of those things are minor, we had a good experience overall... Read more

This facility has their care aides also serve each meal (there are cooks in the kitchen, but the care aides serve the meals to the residents and bus the tables). So if your loved one did not go to the dining room and pushes his call button for help, it can take 30+ minutes for help to arrive because all the aides are doing meal service. Overnight staffing is minimal (one aide per floor). So, again, a call button may not be answered for a long time. In fact, my father's oxygen machine malfunctioned around 6:00 a.m. which is night shift. The alarm is purposefully loud, continuous and annoying. No one from the night shift responded, it was a nurse arriving at 7:00 a.m. who heard it and responded. I do not blame the care aides for this slow response time - I blame the management (probably corporate) for the staffing and decision to have aides serve the meals. And, to be clear, the majority of aides and professionals who cared for my dad were kind and respectful.

Response from Sunrise of Upper St. Clair
November 12, 2024Hi Kirsten, We take your experience at Sunrise of Upper St. Clair very seriously and would like to review this matter closer. Please contact info@sunriseseniorliving.com so we can promptly review and address these concerns. – The Sunrise Team
During the tour and interview process- [name removed] was so busy- being pulled in all directions. She did not have the time to focus just on my family. The nurse during the interview was extremely cold - a terrible attitude and during the walk through- she seemed bothered that we were asking about how my sister’s medication would be administered. The double room- was two separate rooms and a tiny intermediate space- I was not happy with the room selections.

The staff is generally very friendly and helpful, but they are short handed, like many facilities. Yes, we would recommend this community to other families but far more expensive than your representative indicated. Over $[removed] per month

Response from Sunrise of Upper St. Clair
November 4, 2024Hi, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Upper St. Clair and the dedicated care givers and team members. We are passionate about our community and always enjoy hearing the many beautiful stories about our residents and/or team members.
My Dad was only there 2 weeks. They evaluated him as belonging in assisted living rather than in the memory care unit on the 3rd floor. Then a week later, they called me and said he wasn't a good fit in assisted living and they wanted to move him to their memory care unit. I found out they've been trying to build up the numbers in the memory care unit. We weren't pleased with the 3rd floor memory care unit, so we looked into other facilities and moved him. It felt like a bait and switch. He does need memory care but they initially didn't recommend it.

July 11, 2024Hi, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Upper St. Clair and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
My loved one was a resident at Sunrise of Upper St. Clair and the experience was terrible. Basically, they didn't get her out of bed for weeks, never used the Hoyer lift, and the care was lacking. Then they sent us a $[removed] bill. I would definitely not recommend this facility to others.

1. 1. It was not the right place for mom and they are only setup to manage a particular resident. We are moving out this week. 2. 2 sticky floors, urine smell and worse on furniture and in common areas. Dirty pullups left in garbage can days in room 3. 3. There are several people that made this place tolerable and made us rethink moving out sooner. Unfortunately, when they are not working or making facility decisions, it's not enough. 4. 2. This isn't a 1 only because of the few who were gems and obviously found their calling to care for this population 5. 1. We have been there long enough to see the REALLY bad meals and for whatever reason small portions or lack of offering food to the ones that are not all that bad. To compare, we had 5 days in hospital and the food was more appealing there! They serve high-sugar juice and sweets at every meal and only caffeine tea or coffee -it's not at all geared towards health 6. 2. They don't try to engage with everyone or have the staff to support doing this and instead activities are a task to accomplish... much like everything else 7. 1. you are willing to pay for peace of mind that your lo is cared for and cherished - when that stops happening, there is negative value

Response from Sunrise of Upper St. Clair
January 31, 2024Resident care is always a priority at Sunrise of Upper St. Clair. For over 40 years, our Company has had the privilege to take care of thousands of senior residents who have made Sunrise Senior Living their loving and happy home. It’s disappointing whenever we learn that a family member or resident did not enjoy their experience at Sunrise. One dissatisfied member of our community is one too many. Please contact us at information@sunriseseniorliving.com so that we can learn more. Thank you.
The staff is friendly. The facility is beautiful. They are trying to improve the food, but the dining room is a good atmosphere. Tablecloths and cloth napkins. Activities are frequent and fun. They are trying to improve better response time with call button. Very friendly caregivers. Mostly dedicated. I would recommend to anyone with patience.

Don't go there. It was not what they promised. They told us what we wanted to hear and thought it would be different than the last place.

A Place For Mom was a godsend at a point where I did not know where to turn. Sunrise, I still believe is one of the best facilities around, even though some of the ratings are a three, which is average. I think many of the facilities are below average. The staff was friendly and responsive, however, they were often like so many short-staffed or ill trained. I was very involved with my dad's care, but they seemed to welcome that and allowed my involvement which is good. Sunrise seemed to be a good place for my dad in many ways. He had recently lost his wife of 69 years but, the love and caring and concern for his personal well-being and his story was tremendous. Sunrise valued him as a person and, Empowered him to be somewhat independent. Instead of being in bed or in his recliner, all of the time They encouraged him to move about the facility, using his feet in the walker! They were always eyes to make sure that this was safe, but, it not only improved his mental health, but his physical health in circulation as well. When I first walked into the facility, it felt like a home. There was a piano that was often played by residents, or guests, and a resident dog! I was permitted to bring my dog to see my dad every day. That brought joy to many people. There was not an institutional feel or an institutional smell. The third-floor patio/deck and the outside walking paths with flowers and birds were a bonus. Without exception, the team members cared about the residence. Each team member had their own job and responsibility but, would not hesitate to get assistance for a residence need, comfort, or happiness. I am grateful to have found Sunrise.

We picked this community, because it was one of the recommended sites from APFM, proximity and the kindness of [name removed](Marketing Director) It's a beautiful place and that there are some good people there but there are also some staff who are there only for the paycheck. There is a great nurse there by the name of [name removed] but that there are also some aides who sit around during the night shift and don't like to be bothered by a higher maintenance resident.

June 9, 2023Hi! Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Upper St. Clair. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review!
We chose Sunrise of Upper St. Clair because I felt it was much more of a warm and inviting environment. I wasn't looking for a super big place, so the size appealed to me. When I walking in I saw a staff member interacting with a lady who was upset and she handled the situation well. That spoke volumes to me. I would recommend this facility to others

December 20, 2022Hi Jean, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Upper St. Clair and the dedicated care givers and team members. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.
Sunrise of Upper St. Clair was very nice but the only hard thing for us was that it was during Covid and there wasn't much activity at the places that we were touring. It seemed like there was more activity and protection at the facility we went with.

This is a very nice community; however, it is very expensive for the care they provide. The community is able to provide medication management, dressing and bathing assistance. They are able to provide activities for the residents to participate in. There are outings, exercises, and more for the residents to engage with. My loved one enjoys the food offered. There are three meals a day served, and the residents have choices to choose from.
