The difficult thing about rating the facility is that I know every facility is struggling to keep staff and balance the budget. In general, given the cost, I would expect somewhat better overall. However, compared to the previous facility where we had our mother this facility is much better.

After multiple tours we found Shavano Senior Living. Right away I knew this was the best fit for my mother. The staff is very caring, attentive, and communicative. We are very happy with all that Shavano has to offer and have peace of mind knowing that she is safe and taken care of.

I visit SPSL often as they are one of the communities I work with. The place offers a home like feeling with welcoming staff and beautiful decor. I am impressed that the Directors ask for training and education for their staff to help the staff to become more knowledgeable about the types of conditions the residents may have. When working with individuals with cognitive deficits, it is important to understand certain behaviors and how to respond to the individual. The ED , Wellness Director and Memory Care Director have all been wonderful to work with. I highly recommend this community to others who are considering placing their loved one in a Senior Living Community! A place to call Home!

I thought it was prettier, classier. So I would say the staff is very friendly and responsive. Everyone is kind and care for the residents. It's a beautiful ambience and very nice decor and facility. The food is mediocre. Not great. There are almost no activities. They only transport on Thursdays.

Our family had an in person tour and the facility itself is very nice, but if we recall correctly they only had single rooms available and they were quite small.
I would tell others that it has taken my loved one a while to get all settled here. One of the things I have trouble with is that the nurse is kind of hard to get a straight answer from. They have redone their whole staff, so they are slow to get things going again activities wise. He has said that the food has gotten better since being here. Overall I would recommend them to others who are looking, they just need some time to straighten things out with the new staff members.

I really liked this facility. The facility that we went with was just closer to the house. Great facility and very good tour.
My mom suffers from Lewy body Dementia and her cognitive and physical abilities have rapidly declined. My family chose SPSL and it was the best decision we could have made My mom is actually happy and thriving thanks to SPSL.

I really liked this facility and the size of the living spaces. They seemed to be organized and attentive, although overall, I didn't like it quite as much as Heartis. This ranks 2nd on my list at this point.

When I found out my mother needed to go to assisted living, I knew who I was going to find. [name removed] Executive Director. We had the pleasure of knowing [name removed] who served as an Executive Director of an independent living facility. All I can say in the fewest words is he's the best. He loved all the residents, treated with love, repect and always a man of his words. I know mom was in good hands. Then to my surprise I found out my favorite concerge [name removed] worked there too. By far he also loves his job. And people. Always a smile and a happy outlook. He geos far and above helping residents and family members. Then to my surprise the cheff and custodian were here too. They all followed [name removed]. So he's a great boss too. Mom been here 3 months now. The rest of the staff truly love their work. I got to skeep overnight with peace of mind that my mom is cared for by everyone. She's so happy so I'm happy too.

This is a wonderful place for my parent to live! The staff is a big help to our family - always willing to transport items we bring, answer any questions we have (if any), and treatment with respect and responsibility to all. The activities are fun, thoughtfully planned and made known to residents' families: drive-by parades, holiday traditions new old! The food is very good, too! We think this community is the best!

The staff at this facility are great. Our caregivers are efficient, responsible, and compassionate. This includes our concierge [name removed]. He is a friend to each resident and goes above and beyond to help us. His personality and congeniality are so fitted to this position. Personally I treasure his sense of humor.

Everyone is so helpful and courteous. They are concerned with mom's wellbeing and will always go the extra mile. The concierge is awesome! If he doesn't know something he finds out right away. He is always happy and inviting - a great face for the facility.

We first visited SPSL sometime in late 2015, before they opened, and knew that when the time came, it was where we wanted our parents to be. We moved them into SPSL in January of 2017. They had absolutely no intention of leaving their home. In fact my father was adamant that he wanted to die at home. At the time, it was the house they built in 1966 in Hollywood Park. We explained to dad that mom really needed to be in an assisted living facility because her Alzheimer's was progressing to the point that it was no longer safe for them to be at home. He begrudgingly somewhat agreed but would not commit. One day, we showed up in the morning and let them know that today was the day. They were none too happy but when they realized (again) that they could take Conrad, their dog, it made it somewhat better. Mom kept saying, "It doesn't matter where we live as long as we're together." That was so true. The moving company [name removed] was awesome. They took pictures of the living room and bedroom and then set up the apartment in the exact same way. Pictures were hung the same, furniture placed the same. It was amazing! We got it all done before 6:00pm that night. They were in and settled. My dad did ask several times how long they had to "stay in this hotel". But, it didn't take long before they were completely at home in the community. In fact, they were the life of the party. My dad would tease and joke with the staff to the point that he would get so tickled he couldn't speak. They came to love their new home and we had some peace of mind that they were loved where they were. Unfortunately, dad's health continued to decline until the end of February 2018 when he was near the end. It was at this time that I saw personally what SPSL and the staff are really made of. Dad had been on hospice for congestive heart failure since before we moved them in. When the time came, he was moved to end of life care and hospice brought in a hospital bed and the SPSL staff was diligent at trying to make dad comfortable. They put up with me being neurotic about his pain medication and when he could no longer swallow, they somehow always managed to get his meds down. One of the Med Techs, [name removed], lovingly called my dad "Tom Tom". My mom started calling him that too. It was extremely touching and comforting to know how much he was loved by those who cared for him. Dad struggled for about 10 days before passing. During that time, there was always at least one additional daughter (me or one of my 3 sisters) and at the end, all of us were spending the night in their little one bedroom apartment. The staff never complained or gave us attitude about having to step over or around us. They were simply awesome. In fact, they would bring us plates of cookies and pots of coffee and made sure we knew they would get us whatever we needed. My dad's best friend in his new home was [name removed] "the Jersey boy". He and my dad were so close that when my dad was no longer able to respond, [name removed] could not see one of us without crying over losing his friend. It still makes me get a lump in my throat. My dad passed on March 1 and we held the funeral and reception on March 10. I thought it worth including the note I sent to Jack and the staff of SPSL after they hosted the reception for my dad's funeral. The truth is, when it came down to it, my dad did die at home. Dear [name removed] and All SPSL Staff, I cannot thank y’all enough for your accommodations for my parents over the past three weeks. Today was just the tip of the iceberg and I am speaking for my whole family when I say that we are truly blessed that God lead us to Shavano Park Senior Living. A special thank you to [name removed] for putting together and playing the video of my dad on Saturday. It was simply amazing. To [name removed] and the entire Medical staff, thank you so much for your caring and your patience, especially with me as I drove everybody crazy with my worry about my dad. You all have a gift and I’m so grateful for each and everyone of you. To the kitchen staff and housekeeping who made known to us their feelings for my dad and how much they are going to miss him. I can’t tell you what that means to us. To the Jersey boy who loved joking around with my dad and patiently resets the air-conditioner for us after my mom disconnects, thank you so much for your love and friendship with my father. And finally, to [name removed]. Your willingness to take 30 minutes out of your day on March 1 to talk to me and help me process what was going on was a gift from God. I guess Jesus does work in corner offices of directors at assisted living facilities. ;). Thank you so much for helping me understand what my dad needed that day. My mom is so lonely right now. We will be there often but know that she is in good hands with all of you. Now, with Dad gone, it is time to move Mom over to Generations Memory Care. We are so grateful that it is just a move down the hall for her and all the relationships she has made in her new home are still there for her. We still feel incredibly blessed to have her where she is. After having my parents live at SPSL for well over a year, and experiencing the care my father received in his last days, I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly recommend this community to anyone looking for loving and personal care for your loved ones who require assisted living.

I would loved to have my mom be close to me if she had moved into this community. However their pricing was out of the ball park. They were wonderful showing us the community and it fit the needs for the care.

This is a very great community, and my mother is doing very well since her move here. I'am very comfortable with her move here, I know she is in good hands. The staff is amazing. They are very kind, and encouraging. They have many activities available for the residents when they are ready to participate. The community is well maintained, they do a great job with the cleanliness. This is a community I would highly recommend, it is working out well for us.
