It just felt right. Everyone was very nice and it had what we were looking for. Also word of mouth...we heard good things from friends

Nestled on a secluded, lakefront property, our community features paved walking paths, courtyard gardens, and pet-friendly apartments. Residents enjoy frequent outings to local dining and shopping as well as walks around Samford University.
From independent living to assisted living services, memory care, and skilled nursing services, the care one needs is never far away. As a continuing care retirement community, residents can rest assured knowing that as their needs change, our wide range of care services encourage the ability to age in place. There idea of aging in place. Brookdale at Home has been a life saver. My dad gets to stay in "independent living" but can get assistance with all things on an as needed basis. The staff is amazing. I feel like they truly care about the residents and want to help.

It has been a gift to our family. Mom is happy there (although she misses daddy every day) and the location is perfect for me and my grown children to be able to visit her frequently, or run by to take care of a problem easily. In our situation, the location is 90% of why we chose Brookdale and the fact that the facility is clean, the dining is good, the neighbors are lovely--all of that is bonus.

What they are not good at -communication. Not being able to speak with staff with questions via telephone. There was change in personnel. Never see the same people from week to week. People with dementia need a constant person that know how to deal with their emotions and issues and how to deal with them.

Response from Brookdale University Park
February 26, 2024We take your comments seriously and are committed to providing quality care and services to our residents. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and hope you will contact our management team to discuss further.
Overall experience, 4 ; we continually have to call to get financial details corrected or clarified. At first, mom continued to get charges for 2nd person after her husband died in month 1. Eventually corrected after many calls. Recently, she was charged for February which was promoted as the "free month" when she signed original contract in Jan (pay 6, get 7th free). These financial corrections are extremely stressful for my mom. . Meals/Dining, 3.5 (Mom says everyone around her complains about buffet or very slow service; she has nothing to compare to. Supposedly the company excuse is low staffing; why can't Brookdale hire and keep dietary staff)?

Had informative tours and discussed different levels of care. Staff is very caring. A little concerned about staffing during the holidays. Having issues being able to speak directly with the floor nurse to discuss medication. Love the atmosphere within the unit.

I would tell the friend that everyone we dealt with was wonderful. Brookdale was chosen because they had the apartment layout that my sister wanted and because everyone was so friendly.

I would definitely recommend Brookdale University Park. The staff is very friendly and we feel we get honest helpful feedback from them. Though my mom is always wanting to "go home", she is satisfied and has become close to and comfortable with the staff. They are always coming to get her to take her to activities...which are always fun and well thought out. We do have additional hired help during the day, but that is just due to my mom's special needs. The food is fine, but my mom is just picky and doesn't always eat. She and my brother enjoy going out to eat, so I think she may just be a little spoiled (as well she should be). Bottom line, with all the different places we've tried, we would choose Brookdale University Park over all of the others.

I liked Brookdale University Park. The facility was nice and had nice rooms. The food they served us that day was good. Our parents' needs changed after we toured though, and they just ended up needing something different.
Great experience, beautiful grounds, friendly staff. Great pizza in the Bistro. Great all levels of care.

I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. I would also make sure you know what you are looking for for care, and to make sure you are sold the correct care your loved one needs. The staff communication with the family is great and they are responsive. There are three meals served a day. It would be nice to see more diversity within the community's population.

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale University Park 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
