Clean, expert care, wonderful staff

Our mother is at The Selfhelp Home and my family is very happy with everything they have to offer. The staff is very friendly and loves to help and talk with the residents and family members, and there are many activities both inside and outside of the building. I find the level of care to be excellent! I would recommend this for anyone looking for an excellent place for a family member or good friend!... Read more

About the facility The Selfhelp Home

Near Lake Michigan, The Selfhelp Home has housed Chicago’s retiring, Jewish seniors since 1951. The non-profit retirement community offers a continuum of care services within a historic, multi-story building that originally housed Holocaust refugees. Close by, residents can enjoy lakeside activities — hit the putting greens, play a game of tennis, explore the gardens, or simply relax at the beach on sunny days.

With a variety of care options, this expansive community enables seniors to gracefully age in place. Whether residents want a safe place to lead an active, independent lifestyle or require rehabilitative services after a hospital visit, The Selfhelp Home has you covered. Care options include independent living, assisted living, long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, outpatient therapy, and respite care.

This community was designed to help residents lead satisfying lives filled with friendships and hobbies. In their leisure time, residents can enjoy amenities including a gorgeous rooftop garden, solarium, gift shop, media room, movie theater, wellness center, and sanctuary. Plus, regularly hosted events like musical concerts, news briefs, art shows, clubs, tai chi classes, and holiday celebrations keep residents active and thriving.

Not a good place

Worst place the dining room is freezing in the winter time, the food is absolutely terrible and the kitchen manager will not even listen to resident complaints. I am shocked this is considered a five star it deserves not even 1 star. They only care about filling rooms and after that the service is down right terrible. They lie and lie about everything. Half of the apartments don't even have adequate heat they give a small heater to plug in that barely works. They have one nurse who is lazy and barely checks on the residents.

When I toured I found it to ve very institutional. It wasn't nearly as convenient for me to get there as the place we chose. My friend who has a loved one that lives here, feels that the quality of help they get is superb. They care for him very well. I found it depressing, the lighting was not good, and the rooms were like hospital rooms. I did speak at length with the director there and he was wonderful, but I just found it to be unappetizing for our needs.

Kosher Downtown

I've been to Self Help a few times to visit residents on the Jewish holidays. This community has been around for a long time and is one of the few that has Kosher kitchens. Regular Shabbat services are available and they mulitple care levels from independent retirement to assisted living and more.

A Place for Mom has scored The Selfhelp Home 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
