Discovery Village at Deerwood

While it's varied overtime. Its saving grace is that it's relatively new. Floors sometimes have a visible film(sometimes over a week), toilets have not been cleaned, didn't even have a toilet brush in the memory care section and sometimes very strong odor. Light housekeeping tasks not done ie. dusting. Mostly kind have witnessed a lack of patience with residents on occasion. Care services - unremarkable, the pitch at the beginning was very enthusiastic, but behavior since has been lackluster. Food quality is not bad but my mother in law has diabetes and and that seems to be disregarded even with Dr. intervention. Activities seem to have things going on but limited encouraging to engage. Value for cost started out at the lower end in the area for memory care but has increased every year. Assistance with personal grooming has been a constant issue over the last two years, but recently seems to be a bit better

The Director and Sales Manager were very accommodating when it came to getting my dad into Discovery Village. The facility is always cleanly. The staff is pleasant and they truly care about the residents. The communication is good. The proximity and price were also key factors in my decision to move my dad to Discovery Village.

Did not have any meals, but had to have medical staff call so she could get a carton of milk. Don't know about how the activities are, but it is too expensive.

I make these ratings based on what I've heard as I'm in VA and have not been there since she moved in. I would recommend this community to other families based on the experience I have had so far

The care services gets a 4 but mom does not need much and she has mentioned some of her friends who require more often wait long. My Dad died in November. Mom has settled into assisted living well and takes advantage of activities and dining and so has a group of friends who look out for each other. I would recommend it to others. From speaking to friends with similar situations all facilities seem to be short staffed but otherwise our experience has been good. My mom is in the Assisted Living facility. We have had an overall good experience. There is a great leadership team, friendly staff, good meals, and enough activities to keep residents as occupied as they want.

The staff and management are very willing to work with you. The caregivers are friendly and kind. The location is awesome. I wish they would let the chef have more say in the menu instead of being dictated through corporate. The activities should get better now that they recently hired a new director

Housekeeping is better, but not great. I like almost all of the staff. In general, they keep the facility looking nice. The staff is pleasant. The improvements would be to keep staff busy. Many just sitting around with nothing to do. Laundry service, again, is better but keeping people keeps this consistent.

So far Discovery Village at Deerwood has been very pleasant and helpful and based on the experience we have had so far, we would recommend this community to other families who made need a place for their loved ones. They have enough staff and not having to provide sitter service was very nice that they know how to treat their patients

Based on the overall experience so far the new leadership team is still working out some kinks. When it comes to the care services we gave it a 3, but our loved one doesn't ask for help. Our loved one in memory care would rate it a 4. For the value for cost we are unsure so far. We would recommend Discovery Village at Deerwood to other families.

It was new and the layout is nice. The halls are wide and well lit. Community areas are also well lit and easily accessible. There seemed to be more staff on the floor than other facilities

It was decent, but don't bother. It looked nice at first, but their staff turnover rate is high with a lot of temporary employees, one of whom stole my father's phone. They've had to pull people from assisted living over to memory care for help at night, especially when my father was dying and in pain. No one officially called me until an hour after he'd died, and did little to preserve his dignity. How dare they do that to a man whose very presence commanded respect in his prime. A lot of his stuff went "missing", too, including shirts and a homemade blanket that he arrived there with. Staff has been rude with my sister, has left my dad sitting in his own urine soaked clothes for [language removed] hours, and the night before he died, the only decent nurse and I discovered what appeared to be a stage II decubitus ulcer over his sacrum and coccyx from staff FAILING TO CLEAN OFF FECES WHEN CHANGING HIM. I even have visual proof. Don't bother bringing a loved one here for memory care. They don't [language removed] care.

During the time my parents were there, Discovery Village went through 3 changes of Directors and Administration staff. The direct caregivers, especially on the day shift, are absolutely wonderful and care about the residents. Unfortunately they do not staff enough of them. My parents were in the Memory Care unit there from March 2022 until May 2023. My experience was that the Administration was disorganized, made promises they did not keep and did not make any meaningful changes in response to complaints from family members. The facility / building is lovely and new, but the memory care portion is poorly designed for that use. There is no kitchen in the memory care building so the food is plated and transported from the assisted living side over to the MC side in hot carts. The food is inconsistent, and they provide portions too small for adults. They advertise restaurant level dining but that is not what they get. Complaints about the food from family was met with excuses about supply chain issues. They are understaffed. Especially on the night shift. They claimed that they were checking on residents every 2 hours. Some nights they didn't check on my parents the whole night. Multiple times my Dad fell in his room and laid on the floor from 2-3 hours before someone checked on him.

I wrote a google review the other day for Discovery Village at Deerwood, but upon reading it, decided it wasn’t enough, felt remiss in not mentioning a few names. [name removed] memory care director has been such a tremendous help to mom, as well as to myself. Mom did a picture and upon seeing it [name removed] asked for mom to do her one, made moms day and mom still talks about that, feels such pride. [name removed] has worked with mom since her arrival there and really helps as well as talks to mom, makes her feel so important, and that’s not just for mom but all the residents. [name removed], the nurse, tremendous assist for Discovery with a caring heart of gold. She was checking on mom on her off day and is so very responsive in keeping me informed. [name removed] was first caregiver I met at Discovery, such a gentleman in the truest since of the word and treats all residents with such great care and understanding. The caregivers at Discovery got together and sent mom a photo while in hospital, brought such a smile…

My mother in law is here. We will be looking to remove her from this community asap. She has memory issues and is to be supervised. A man entered her room and attempted to have sex with her. We recently learned about the death of a woman who fell in the pool while it was unsupervised and she drowned in the pool and was there for a while before they found her. [removed]……they are currently being sued for this. The staff is constantly changing over, the food is awful and there are little to no activities for the residents. Think twice before coming here…..made a mistake here……

It's a beautiful building. The staff communication is challenging. They lost their head director and now they are loosing the head nurse. I was told they help people get adjusted. I have not seen that.

You have to be diligent and just make sure that everything that is promised from them is followed through on. The 2 women who run it are very enthusiastic and positive that it can sometimes fool you to think you have nothing to worry about, but it is still a facility with moving parts that you have to keep up with. I would recommend Discovery Deerwood to others

The community is beautiful on the surface, but they can't keep staff, the director does not respond back. One of the reasons we left is because wrong medicines were given. They refused to give medicine on time, medicine would run out and no one would tell me. His door was broken from the day that he moved in and was not properly fixed when we removed my loved one from the community. When they had Covid-19 instances, there was no communication about the residents having Covid-19 to inform the family and friends. There was mold in my loved ones room and tried to say it was dirt.
