The single most important matter for my mother has been this: Charter saved her life. Any other issues, such as the quality of the food or the activities, pales in comparison. In early [date removed], it looked like my mother was doomed to living out her days in a nursing home. At first, Charter (then called Cedarhurst), rejected her. A week later, on re-evaluation, they accepted her. Over a period of months, my mother has gone from needing a high level of care to fair amount of independence. She can get around her apartment in a walker, and her life is unmeasurably better than it would have been under any alternative circumstance. All the credit goes to an excellent, friendly, and caring staff. All that said, Charter (when it was Cedarhurst) was quite obviously going through a large number of administrative issues. Things have gotten better in this regard with the new management company. However, the communication back to me from a couple of key people has not been what it should be. The food is fine as institutional food goes. I wonder why institutional food cannot be better. Activities are fine but they don't fit with my mother as well. She would benefit from concerts, presentations on artistic subjects, and things like that.

That this place the Staff literally hides from you! They don't speak to anyone. They do not make any eye contact either. When you make an appointment with the staff about a complaint they try to avoid you at all costs! Making you wait & wait! Then tell you "Oh, it was your parent who didn't want in her room to clean or change the bedding! Do not fall for the Smooth talking ladies who get you in the door! Go talk to some of the Residents at breakfast or at any meal. That is where you can really find out about the staff. Especially when other non-resident people are there visiting their family or friend! Ask way more questions than you think is necessary! Get everything in Writing as well. It's better now because we have taken our Mom out of that place! Dirty, gross disgusting hard as rock food & they over charged her as well. Nope, they refused to give her the money back!. Please please do not let any place there parent in that place! They treat their residents HORRIBLY

Response from Charter Senior Living of Rockford
August 14, 2024We are sorry to hear of your negative experience that occurred under prior management. This community is now managed by Charter Senior Living. Thank you.
I would recommend this place. Communication with the family is good. I often ask them not to call my son at night. They do as I ask and call him in the morning. Moving in was okay. It was a ton of work for my son, but he made it work. The housekeeping is okay. They have trouble keeping a housekeeper. But most of them have been pretty good. The food is okay, it will be better when they improve it, which they are working on. We have only been under Charter since [date removed]

My Mom did not avail herself of any activities, though she was invited and encouraged to both by family and staff. She didn't care for the food and she is NOT at all picky. That would be her biggest complaint. The Bosses and the CNAs were delightful to work with. The RNs were almost always agency nurses, so they were not as invested as the other staff members. The Director of Nursing was great as was the Facility Director and Director of Marketing. All very helpful! Communication was good, but was almost always initiated by me or my siblings. Housekeeping was fine, no clear schedule that I could determine. They were going thru a renovation of the public areas, so it was occasionally a little messy, but that was to be expected. I would recommend this facility to anyone who had long term care insurance or loads of money because they do not roll over to public aid. So if you outlive your money, you have to move. That's why my Mom is no longer there. But for someone with good money, it's a wonderful place!

March 19, 2024Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you found our staff enjoyable to work with. We apologize for any areas where we fell short of expectations. We appreciate your recommendation and are committed to continually improving our services. If you have any further concerns or suggestions, please feel free to share them with us.
There has been a huge turnover in staff/ mgmt. My loved one has had her Apt cleaned 2-3 times since her move in ( going on a year) And the sheets/ towels ( part of the contract) haven't been washed. Family has had to do it. On a + note. It's under new Mgmt so I'm holding out. My loved one can be difficult but they are Not Raising the rent. So maybe my score will be a little higher. As if she were at any of the other places we toured she would be paying more. ALL of the staff are great! They get along with my aunt and always are helpful. Maybe it's just ME. Guilt? Did we choose what was best for her? Or for us? It's been an adjustment due to no Maintenance staff, nursing shortage, no activity staff, van was " in repair". Things are moving along now. New Maint. My father fell a couple weeks ago and was left there on a ground, all night with no help. After he was found on the ground the next morning, he was admitted to the hospital. Moral if ther story… the staff does not check on their residents! The staff is very unprofessional and lazy. The receptionist is VERY rude and i was told she doesn’t like people “bother” her. Leading back in to unprofessionalism, the staff lacks in wearing uniform. They are often caught wearing sweats, pajamas, house shoes, etc. Any time I come in to check on my dad, the staff is no where to be found or sitting down playing on their phones! Dishing staff is rude as well, don’t get me started on that. Overall I highly regret my decision in residing my dad at this place.

I would say the staff is amazing- very nice and accommodating. The move in experience for my mom was good. She says the food is decent, she likes that they have choices at each meal. Housekeeping hasn't been consistent, which is the only drawback. I would recommend Cedarhurst of Rockford to others, for sure.

My biggest concern was the shortage of staff, especially at night. Often the DON was working double shifts because she was shorthanded. She was very capable, but exhausted! The facility was undergoing remodeling and was going to be beautiful! The people, staff and residents alike, were wonderful and friendly.

We appreciate the dining for my parents. They don't complain about the food. They do say it's hard to find assistance after hours, but they are using their pendant button as needed. We expected more in medication management and then was told additional assistance is an additional $[removed] per person, which was a surprise. There has been communication issues between us and the upper management. Lots of follow up emails and questions. We picked this community over others for the price, accommodations, food and being able to increase care services as needed as my parents need it.I want to add that at this point we wouldn't change our decision for Cedarhurst. With that said, my brother and I have had to be very hands on with communication with the Executive Director, the Head of nursing, and the transportation manager.

They do not do everything that they tell you that is included in the monthly rent. Like cleaning my loved one's room since July when she moved in. Her room has only been cleaned and vacuumed twice. I had to call corporate just to get them to clean her room, which also had massive confusion webs everywhere! The staff is NOT friendly, at all. They're only nice until they get you in the door! They don't tell you the truth about the actual costs and then all of the extra fees you have to pay for! The dining staff is lacking in the being polite and smiling to the residents who are paying their salary. The only have 1 cleaning girl and she is always sitting and playing on her phone! They could hire more staff and with better friendly faces. Every time I go there, I never see anyone that works there except for the cleaning girl, sitting around. You should not be adding residents to your facility without the proper staffing! No wonder they only have 50 rooms with residents. Even the dining room cooks are supposed to make fresh to order items on a separate menu, which they do NOT! I've been there during lunch and dinner and have seen the blackened burnt hockey pucks that they call a FRESH OFF THE GRILL HAMBURGER! I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this facility!

As your loved one gets older and is struggling with quality of life, Cedarhurst of Rockford works with St. Croix Hospice to ensure that they can stay in their environment. The staff at Cedarhurst are very professional and friendly. The meals are good and they adjust to dietary needs. The staff members are always open to speaking with the residents' family. I would highly recommend this facility to family and friends. I toured other facilities, but Cedarhurst stood out for the value.

The community could use some more staff to assist with the resident's care. There is a menu for the residents to order from, and if they don't like it the chef will accommodate requests. There are care fees on top of the rent of the apartment. Some of the care includes medication, bathing and dressing assistance and hygiene care.

Having your loved one need this type of care is such a hard thing to go through. All the staff there did their very best, and I think they did well caring for my loved one.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The management was not readily approachable. The food was good here. The communication was good to excellent in regards to nurses, physical therapist, and CNAs to the families. I wish the community was more flexible in terms of what they could be flexible on. There was too much turnover in administration.

This assisted living center keeps showing up [on the internet] as a memory care facility, it IS NOT. The building is not secure so as a person with dementia gets worse , starts to wonder or becomes aggressive they are not equipped to handle it. Don't waste your time and money placing any family member with dementia in this facility.

Response from Charter Senior Living of Rockford
June 30, 2020Crimson Pointe offers assisted living suites, as well as rehabilitation services, respite care, and short-term stay apartments. We carefully assess each resident's needs prior to move-in as we want residents to call Crimson Pointe home for years to come. During that assessment we may find an individual who will need a higher level of care than we offer, such as memory care services. In those instances we will help the family to find the best placement for their loved one as we do not have a specialized memory care neighborhood.

A Place for Mom has scored Charter Senior Living of Rockford 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
