Our Tour Experience

We had a couple of very good tours at Carriage Court of Kenwood. We started out with an online tour first. The online experience was different than in person, so I was glad we did it again in person. I got a much better feel for the facility in person. I had a good overall impression of the facility, and I liked the level of activities they offered. Location played a big part in our decision, and Carriage Court was just farther away than we wanted. They gave us cookies as we were leaving, which was nice. It was an extremely clean and beautiful facility in a fantastic area of town. They were a little pricier than some of the other places we looked at.

My families experience with this community is better then where she was prior

Our loved one is in the memory care unit and we have not been able to see her for awhile because of COVID. We do not get much communication with the care givers other then the times she has taken a fall or when we speak about supplies that are needed. It is just an unusual time so it is very hard to know exactly what is going on. She was just recently moved from her original room to a new room, and we were not able to help her move or get her things set up for her.

Transitions

My mother is in her late 90's and has been at Carriage Court for years. I so appreciate the compassionate staff who have helped mom and our family transition through various stages of adjustment and adaptation. Leaving her home of 65 years was not easy, but the one bedroom at Carriage Court has allowed her to be surrounded by her own furniture and favorite artwork. Her room is bright and welcoming. Her visitors are always greeted with hospitality and empathetic compassion for mom's kind spirit. As with any facility there have been many changes over the years, growth, promotions, saying goodbye to favorite caregivers. [Name removed] has been there to support communications between management and the caregivers during daily changes in routine. The nurses are kind and compassionate, persevering through the day to day challenges to greet and care for mom with a smile. I so appreciate [name removed]'s most recent support, as mom transitions to needing an adjustable hospital bed. [Names removed] in Housekeeping helped tremendously in supporting me to prepare her room for transition to Hospice care.

Glad to be gone

I recently lived in Carriage Court. It may be ok for folks who can take care of themselves. But if you need help with toileting or bathing etc, , look elsewhere. The staff has unbelievable turnover, there is someone new every few days. Some of the nurses aides are not licensed or trained. The food will appeal to you if you were satisfied with your 3rd grade school cafeteria meals. The building is aged and needs many high cost repairs. For example, both elevators broke at same time. People who could use steps were able to deal with this problem. They did not have bus service for many months. There was a new bus parked in back but couldn’t be used due to “leasing issues”. The managers try to smooth things out but it looked like their hands were tied.

Staff will not return funds from overpayment

Initially I thought this facility was a good choice for my mother. However, after she passed away, her estate was due a refund. I have been contacting the staff, both the executive director and the business and financial staff. I have called and emailed at least 4 times for more than 3 weeks and have gotten NO response from them AT ALL. This refund is for a significant amount, around $2500.00. I do not live in Cincinnati, in fact I am about 400+ miles away from the facility. Otherwise, I could just go to their location and sit in their lobby until I could get somebody to talk to me.

We have been very impressed and pleased with all aspects of our experience with Carriage Court for having my wife’s Mom be a Resident there. This includes our on site orientation and explanation of key points, pre move home assessment, friendliness of all staff from Exec Director, area Coordinators, food service people, Nurses and especially the direct Caregivers. The plan for daily activities offered are a excellent variety of things to do, along with seasonal and topical themes with some of them. They were also very accommodating with moving my Mother in law to a more suitable room. She has adjusted well with the support of the staff and developed good social contacts. This has been a great relief for my wife and me.

Went down FAST dont care for people

My Dad Was At Carriage Court of Kenwood for 2 and1/2 years and as long as [name removed] was there it was good. When they moved him up on three I had to fight for his showers (2 a week) and they don’t even like giving them. But still it was a decent place for my Dad. After they got ride of [name removed] the place went down FAST! See [name removed] had a Heart and loved the people and Looked at them as people not dollar sines Now the New D.O.N. A really young girl Is consumed with power! She LOVES controlling other peoples lives. And pushing them around. And dos not care about the Individual. She is power hungry. Also I heard from other family members that there are a LOT of bed sores. (My Dad didn’t have any because he took care of himself except for his shower) My Dad didn’t wonder around didn’t go in other peoples rooms and The Little power hungry D.O.N. Was trying to force Him on a lock down unit. Because he went downstairs at night. He didn’t go outside or bother anything just went down stares and sat down. I would not let Her so she Kicked him out. Mind you he didn’t bother ANYONE didn’t do anything 95 % of the people there didn’t think he ended to be moved Just the young D.O.N. And Her entourage. Also they never updated his record from when he move in they had him on purad food and to week to do anything, (My dad ears anything he wants) so no other place would take him. When the new place I was trying to got him in ask about that She told the Doctor to put in the updated record that He had to be in lock down. Wile I was trying to find him a new place they started treating Him Badly Like for example feeding him pork when they KNOW he dosnt ear pork. Not the help But the Bosses. I am so glad to have My poor Dad out of there.

Not as clean as it could be

I toured here. It was a nice facility and the people that took us around were very informative. But it was older and we were looking for more of a newer type facility. It wasn’t as clean as a few other places that I had already looked at, but it wasn’t bad. I think it was just because it was older. The rooms were big and it was a bright community. The residents we talked to seemed to like being there.

Too Many Agency Care Providers, Poor Management Oversight and Service Delivery

The most striking thing we have come to learn is that the majority of the care providers at Carriage Court are provided by outside agencies and are not direct employees of Carriage Court. This leads to a lack of coordination and communication. Things as simple as visitors ringing the doorbell in order to be assisted with codes to get an elevator and get to the first floor are not not always communicated to agency-provided aides; they often have no idea what the ringing bell means. On a number of occasions, when returning my family member to the facility, the nurse (again, far too often an agency-provided person) has left the evening meds on a table in the room for family to administer. We have declined to administer the meds and requested the nurse to handle. Appointments and outings are often delayed or canceled because the day's schedule provided to the facility is not communicated to the aide, agency or otherwise. Laundry, room cleaning, making of beds, taking out trash, keeping toilet paper in the room and available are not priorities. Dietary restrictions are not always followed. Management staff apologize when presented with these issues but seem to have no way to adequately address because they are not aware of the deficiencies until they are pointed out to them (even though simple and periodic checks would have revealed the ongoing deficiency) and may not know who to hold accountable because of the large number of agency providers who do not consistently work there. They apply a bandaid and take care of the issue at that moment (such as getting laundry done or getting rolls of toilet paper in the room), but cannot apply the necessary management skills to minimize the chance that the same thing will happen again. It does, they apologize again, it happens again, they apologize.... What's particularly scary is that our loved one has someone in the facility nearly every day. Our experience flies in the face of the generally accepted theory that one needs to be present in the facility daily to get quality care for your loved one. It makes us wonder about the care provided to residents who do not receive frequent family visits.

The facility was bright and clean. The Masses and Rosary scheduled weekly were appealing to Mom. The focus was centered around that activities and programs that are offered. The monthly price that we were quoted was different than the pricing provided in the folder that we received. We will follow up for a better understanding of the cost.

Room For Improvement With The Night Staff

It is still a work in progress from my mother, and her move to this community. She is safe, but I do have some concerns about the night staff. One of the nurses called me at eight in the evening, and she put my mother on the phone. She was trying to tell me that my mother has sun dowers, but I know she does not have that. She just goes to sleep a little later than the other residents. That did not sit well with me when she was trying to tell me that. There is room for improvement with the evening staff. Hopefully they can correct the concerns I have.
