As with most facilities, staff can make or break the environment. There are a few key dedicated staff that work very hard to create a warm, comfortable homey atmosphere. At times they are understaffed and planned activities don’t get done. My parents enjoy the food and the ‘in-house’ beautician, podiatrist and doctor visits. The extended family has enjoyed the ability to visit anytime and the opportunity to bring my parents dog to visit them. The staff went above and beyond to recognize my parents on their birthdays and provided them with cupcakes, cards and a gift. They felt very loved. Thank you to the dedicated workers that treat them like family rather than clients.

I think it's a great bang for your buck, however, it needs a little TLC. We picked this community because of the location and friendliness and the staff.

Response from Brookdale Westlake Village
September 3, 2024Thank you for choosing Brookdale and taking the time to share your feedback. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and encourage you to contact our management team.
After 7 months of residency, our family concluded that Brookdale at Westlake Village Assisted Living could not adequately and safely provide care for our loved one. Care aide assistance and services were often unsatisfactory and very unreliable. If care aides responded to calls for assistance, it could take up to 90 minutes. Care aides would refuse to provide assistance in general and for toileting. Our loved one was told by care aides that care would be refused when expressing dissatisfaction with care aide response times and care. Our loved one was told to not use or stop using the call button and the pendant call button was often removed and placed out of reach by care aides. Our loved one was left unattended for lengthy periods of time in high risk locations, including on the toilet. We were often told that care aides did not respond because they were on break or whoever was covering for them was supposed to respond. When resorting to walking around the facility to find someone to assist us, it was common to find several care aides socializing outside the nurses’ station. It makes no sense and an obvious safety concern that all care aides would be scheduled to take breaks at the same time. Calls to the nurses’ station and switchboards would go unanswered, even during business hours, and often with a recording that the voicemail box was full. Usually, such calls were necessitated because of an urgent need for assistance. Laundry facilities were often out of order or did not adequately clean clothing because the washers and dryers were contaminated by soiled clothing. Soiled gloves, bed pads, and linens were often left on the floor and not properly placed in the garbage or sealed bags. The restroom area, and ADL toileting and showering equipment was often left soiled and uncleaned after use. Our family was at the facility often and at varying times. We regularly encountered residents calling out for help for extended periods of time without response, residents wandering outside the premises and unable to figure out how to get back into the building, or disoriented residents placed in hallways, doorways, or on benches for extended periods of time, unsupervised, and crying out for help. Our loved one never had bedsores prior to residency at Brookdale at Westlake Village. The recurring incidents of bedsores became so bad that our loved one required medical attention and treatment had to be closely monitored by the family and private-paid care aides to ensure it occurred. Our family went above and beyond to facilitate and participate in a successful residency. Unending promises for residency and care improvement and/or correction were given by management and staff and consistently unfulfilled. The higher public rating for Independent Living at Brookdale at Westlake Village is understandable. If your loved one has the ability to be relatively independent, the facility activities and social opportunities make for a pleasant lifestyle. If, however, your loved one requires moderate to higher level of assistance of Assisted Living, I assure you, they will encounter the same problems we did and I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. If you choose to try Brookdale at Westlake Village Assisted Living residency for your loved one, it is absolutely necessary to visit often and at different timeframes, listen to your loved one’s feedback and body language, observe other residents’ care, and place a surveillance camera in your loved one’s living quarters. I truly regret waiting for as long as I did to terminate residency at Assisted Living and relocate our loved one to a better managed and operated facility. If you encounter the same residency and care problems we did, I encourage you to relocate promptly.

Response from Brookdale Westlake Village
August 16, 2024We take your comments seriously and appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. The health and well-being of our residents is our priority and we have shared your concerns with our management team for review.
The staff is very kind and caring but they bring in agency help more than I would like. The building and food were ok but could be better. The cable TV system in assisted living is pretty terrible. The family is responsible for doing the laundry.

Since my loved one was in memory care a lot of things don't apply. I really have nothing negative to say about the staff or the facility. It was a nice place.

The first thing I would tell someone is that all the people are concerned about the residents. They watch out for the residents and if any staff sees something that concerns them it is brought to the attention of management and or a responsible family member. The meals are very good and the activities are good. I have admired their ability to have staff that is caring. The only advice I would have is to update the facilities...they appear a little tired. I would absolutely recommend this facility!

As with a lot of facilities, they seem to be short staffed. Cleaning of apt doesn't happen as often as promised, food is so-so, in-house home health care has a lot of turn over. Most staff is friendly, they try to set up nice activities. In general, it was a good move for my Dad and stepmother.

Pleasant and positive staff. Clean premises. It’s Great! I don't have anything negative to say. Staff was very cooperative when my friend went from the hospital to the nursing care and back to their Independent Apartment. I would recommend Brookdale Westlake Village.

The staff is kind and helpful but the facility could use updating and I wish they had better staff for the nurses.I wish they had more nurses on staff at a time.I liked that it had skilled nursing next door and it felt homey.

What our family likes the most about the Brookdale Westlake Village community is the overall friendliness of everyone there. We would recommend this community to other families based on the experience we have had so far, but my only negative is it needs a little TLC in spots?

A Place for Mom has scored Brookdale Westlake Village 9.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
