My Aunt has been at American House Joy Road in Westland for 2 1/2 years. In my opinion we could NOT have found a better place for her to live. She loved it there and so did my sisters and I . I am so sad to say that we have had to move her out. She had a fall in early October and broke her hip. She has Dementia and was in rehab for almost a month. She was walking and taking care of herself before the fall. and now is in a Wheelchair. She did not make Great Progress while in rehab. Our overall experience at American House was Great. Everyone that worked there became our friends and were so kind to all of us. They looked out for my Aunt. They were all very sad that she had to move because they loved chatting all the time. The Cleanliness of the building was also Awesome. Always Clean an inviting. It is a Very nice place to live and visit. Friendliness of the staff was also amazing. As I said they all became like friends as well as the residents that live there. We will miss them all. My Aunts Quality of care was also good. She had her medication brought up by the Med team and their were a few issues but talked with them and worked the situation out. My Aunt was stubborn and would not go to the dining room so we paid to have her meals brought up to her room. The food that is prepared there was always VERY GOOD and it was nice you could select something else if you wanted to. Their activities and entertainment that came and played music were also fun to watch and listen to. They have many fun things to do but my Aunt liked being by herself unless my sisters and I would join her. They tried to get her to participate but she was not interested. The Cost and Value was Great also. While looking for a new place with her needing more care it is so much more costly and not as Pleasant as American House. Her Safety is very important to us and as much as we wanted to stay at American House with her needs we knew we had to move her. I would highly recommend The Joy Road Westland American House to anyone looking for a place for their Loved ones to reside. It is Bright Clean and Cheerful... Read more

Some of the staff need to take classes on how to be compassionate when a loved one is dying. Hospice staff were great. Not the facility staff. Sadly, this is not a place I would recommend.

Friendly tenants and staff made a point to have interesting events planned. Mom enjoyed the book club. There were a couple residents with memory issues that probably should have been somewhere else. One was perhaps progressing rapidly as she passed away. I'm not sure the communication with their family - just noticed symptoms as we interacted. ( 2 sweet ladies, one passed away before about the time Mom did, the other had tried to get into Moms room a couple times. Staff seemed responsive to Mom communicating concern. Mom's unit had an electrical problem. Just using stove tripped breaker that could only be accessed by staff and was an issue a couple times. They seemed to try and troubleshoot but we never got a real reason. Temp control in her unit was non-existent. It sometimes got very hot and didn't seem to respond to the thermostat. Medical Team personnel were not always there to escort her to meals. They were friendly enough but some inconsistency in service. They did respond overnight when mom had concerns - we were thankful for that.

May 17, 2024Michael, thank you for your feedback. It's always our hope our residents and guests have a pleasant experience with us. When they don't, we want to personally hear about it. Feel free to reach out to our Vice President of Operations, Todd, at tgabel@americanhouse.com to discuss any concerns you may still have. We value your feedback and look forward to hearing from you.
The staff is so wonderful. They notice when a community member is not themselves! They are very friendly and so helpful. We are new to the area and they helped me find a dentist for my Dad. Helped get all paperwork in order for a doctor to come to my Dad instead of me having to miss work. They also helped get is cable set up

My mother was a resident there for 10 years, and when she passed all they cared about were the keys. She had so many things that went missing, such as jewelry, clothes, and other personal items. Food would even go missing from her apartment,. The Medical Team was not much better. If you called once you would have to call a dozen times and hope someone would answer. My mother would call me to call them because they would not answer the phone when she needed help at times. Worst yet was The Medical Team Hospice care .... run don't walk. It's fine if you have time to micro manage the Medical team and Hospice team. Once I got hospice I thought it would take things off my shoulders, that didn't happen I had to micro manager them as well. They have no back up generator and leave residents in the dark and residents on oxygen will be out of luck. BE AWARE!

They have been great. I would say that the staff is very welcoming and has continued to be after my family members moved in.This was the main reason we chose the facility. Also, they keep the common areas very clean.

January 18, 2024TA, we love to hear about experiences like yours! Thank you for your review!
1. I didn't like living on the 3rd floor and having a balcony, too narrow for my patio table (and chairs). 2. The food served was nothing to rave about. 3. The two bedroom unit is small, square footage wise. I never moved in or lived there, this all based off my tour experience.

November 20, 2023Pete, thank you for taking the time to visit our community! We appreciate your feedback.
The staff are extremely nice, including kitchen. They could improve on timing as far as maintenance. We've nana asking for fixes on 2 items since she moved in and they haven't done either of them yet. My mom is happy there!

I couldn't be more happy. I feel very much at home in my two bedroom apartment. At first I didn't know if I would have a place for everything, then I quickly found out I did. The building is kept clean, the food is so good. The staff is awesome, so helpful and friendly. I love my new home.

The staff have been accommodating. The community will try and get my loved one to partake in the activities. They will also deliver the meals to the resident's rooms for a fee. My loved one really enjoys living in the community. There are straight hallways to prevent some confusion for the residents during travel. There is housekeeping once a week and the staff will change the linens and wash them for the residents. The apartment has a full kitchen with a stove, fridge, and sink.

June 21, 2022Cheryl, thank you for your 5-star review of our community! We appreciate your feedback.
This is a nice community. They have great staff. It does take some time for the staff to get things done here; however, the communication is pretty good. The apartments have a kitchenette in them. The community does have a communal washers and dryers available for the residents to use.

June 10, 2022Chris, thanks so much for your feedback. We appreciate you being open and honest with us.
The care staff was very limited during the entire stay of my loved one. We paid for better service than we received. The communication with the manager was limited as well. The elevator was out during my loved one's stay and this prevented the residents from getting out to socialize with other residents. The food was delivered by the staff; however, it arrived cold. They did have activities for the residents on the first floor.

April 5, 2022Robin, thank you for your 5-star review of our community! We appreciate your feedback.
We've had an excellent experience. I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. They are extremely friendly here. The residents seemed happy here during our tour. The day my loved one moved in the staff were friendly and they continue to be. There is a new cook and they are providing better food than in the beginning. The food could still be improved upon for the residents. Some of the activities include exercise classes, bingo, arts and crafts, outside entertainers, movies, theme parties, religious activities, and more for the residents to choose from.

The community is very attentive towards the residents. They are quick to resolve any issue that arises. They value their residents and are very caring. Bingo, outside entertainment, fieldtrips and more are some of the activities offered for the residents to participate in. My loved one seems to enjoy the food offered at the community.

December 22, 2021Thank you for your 5-star review of our community! We appreciate your positive feedback and for taking the time to post this review.
The apartment they showed me was very small. And there would have been a lot of walking to do, as it was not near the exits. I also didn't like that it seemed like they wanted me to hand over all of my care to them - food, cleaning, laundry. And I didn’t have a choice in the matter. I chose an independent living community that allowed me to choose to do those things for myself.
