Buyer Beware

The hard thing is that you have to ask the right questions to make sure that your loved one is receiving the right care. The lease document is very legalistic and supports the company more than it does the resident. The food has not been hot and it does not look anything like the upscale dining that is portrayed and the menu repeats a lot and there is no variety. The servers are also not trained so the service is poor.

individual communication need attention

The community has a lot of activities. From what we have seen they seem to have high turnover. Communication could be better. We do not get responses or follow up when we provide feedback or leave messages. I would not recommend this community to others that are older and need more assistance.

Our experience to date

The Blake at Baxter Village opened right before the pandemic and are having growing pains. It appears that they are having a hard time keeping staff so they have a lot of turnover which then causes issues because they aren't forming relationships with their residents.

Our experience of The Blake during Covid

We chose The Blake at the time because we had to make a quick decision in a time frame and they were able to take her. We also liked the location and the safety of it. It is a beautiful facility but we have not been overly impressed. Communication with the staff members has been difficult, there is not always good with following through with things. Our loved one thinks that the food could use improvement, she asks for them not to put certain things on her food and they do it anyways. I do think things would be better if we were allowed inside the facility and would be able to get to know the staff members better.

Overall good community

Our first impression of this community is that it was very bright when we first visited and it was kept pretty clean. The food at this community is pretty good. Before COVID the activities were lacking, but from our understanding they are trying to improve them. The only issue we have is the communication, it is lacking. Especially during COVID its been hard to get a hold of the employees, but they just hired new employees so its getting better.

The Blake at Edgewater review

The Blake community is very clean and beautiful but overall a bad experience especially for all the money I have had to pay. Several times we have been served breaded pork chops that are hard as a brick, overcook most thins. Best meal I have had was breakfast. Personnel just wants to parent you like a child.

our families experience

I'm not happy with how the Blake handled my mom. She moved out in about a week. The care team was very good. I almost feel like they did a bait and switch because they evaluated my mom for assisted living and immediately moved her to memory care. My mom is not without fault but we weren't happy with how they handled it.

Would not recommend

Additional notes: during the sales process, the only reason I moved my loved one here was because of their promise of "aging in place." they touted their extended congregate care licensing as next level care. They gave me overwhelming assurance that they could handle her health challenges going forward. The first time she had an issue and went to the hospital the evaluating her and said she could not come back. She spent a total of two weeks of actual living time at the Blake. In a word, they sold me a bill of goods, and the Director of nursing didn't even have the professional courtesy to call me and tell me that she made a determination that she could not come back. To the astonishment of the rehabilitation facility, they delivered the news to me. I would not recommend anyone take their loved-one there, they overpromise under deliver in every aspect.

Not a good fit for memory care if needing assistance with activities of daily living

I would say if a loved one needs little assistance memory care...it's probably a pretty good facility. If they need care with ADL's it will not be a good fit. My Dad kind of got lost in the shuffle and needed more care than they could provide to him. Ended up with a very bad bedsore to lower back. I moved him to a facility that can provide this kind of care needed for him. So if loved one care can do their own thing and just need monitoring here and there. The Blake will work only if this type of patient care.

Not worth the price

The unit was completely ignored during COVID. When we were finally able to visit, the unit was filthy to the point where we could write our names on the dusty surfaces. The phone was out of order. Prior to the pandemic, and again now, it takes multiple requests to get problems addressed. They are "professional apologizers" and each time make you think that they accept accountability and that the solution is right around the corner. There are far better options in this price point.

Lots of work needed to make this a well run community

We took a chance on this new facility hoping our loved one could grow with it. They were horribly short staffed, showed little concern for working together to resolve numerous issues, virtually impossible to reach or get responses from, and the staff exhibited low morale (eye rolls, side comments, you name it). I don't usually post reviews but our experience was so exhausting and dreadful it warrants pointing out. Ask questions, talk to staff, talk to residents, pay attention to what you hear. Hopefully a turn around is coming and they can work to make this the wonderful facility it was designed to be.

Don’t fall for it!!

We thought we had found the perfect place for my mom as her first experience in memory care. The directors at The Blake are very compassionate and knowledgeable, unfortunately the care givers they hire are neither. If you want a place where your loved one will be bossed around and spoken to like they’re in the military, then this is the place for you. I’d strongly suggest you get cameras with audio for the room! My mom lasted one month and it was a terrifying and traumatic experience for her. Thank God The Blake insisted that we hire a one-on-one aide from an outside agency. The agency sent experienced, compassionate caregivers who provided the dignity my mom deserved. We ended up bringing Mom home and using the agency for in-home care. Be careful! It looks beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, but that’s all they’ve got. No hot water! Below average food. Low quality care from untrained and understaffed personnel. Very few activities for the memory care unit. So disappointing!

Beware

My parents had lived there over a year and we have moved out. There is not enough space to write what all is wrong with this community. My heart breaks for the residents that do not receive the care promised. Whatever the website states or whatever they tell you, DO NOT believe it. When my father was actively passing, their Director on the MC administered his meds incorrectly and didn’t follow protocol for a passing resident. . Residents not receiving their medications from agency nurses or given another residents medication. Not enough staff or nurses to take care of all the residents. The facility is not kept clean. They are working on hiring the 4th executive Director in a year. The last ED lasted maybe six weeks. One of their top nurses has recently resigned along with others. There is so much! Don’t hesitate to reach out for the true story.

Tour Review

Our family had an in person tour and the sales director who was supposed to give us the tour had a family emergency so someone stepped in for him and overall it just was not a good first impression. We knew right away it was not the place for our loved one, it felt very sterile, institutional and not a homey environment at all.

Run! Run fast away from here!

The Blake is great if you don’t actually need care. The minute you need help with incontinence, memory care, sundowners, etc. find somewhere else to go! Front desk workers are amazing but behind the door workers show little compassion or empathy. Nurses great but hourly workers lack training and do not communicate. Disconnect between what is suggested and what actually courts in care. Many residents isolated and needs ignored.

Don't go there

My aunt was in there for 3 months in the memory side. During that time, we never could get any of them 2 return calls. Always had 2 go there and still couldn't get answers. When we went 2 get my family pictures, that was for her memory box, they had lost them. I stupidly hadn't made copies. They give u an option to use their pharmacy or pay 150.00 for us to provide her medicine. We picked their 2 use theirs, unfortunately. We could get one of her pills for 3.46 for 60 pills but though their pharmacy, it was 159.00 for 21.00. We left my aunt a case of boost, since she was on blended food, and in 1 months time they only gave her 6 when they were supposed 2 give her 3-4 a day. I wouldn't recommend them.

do not place your loved one at the Blake

The worst experience of my life. We looked around for a place for my mother with Alzheimer's and at first glance it looked great.. The Blake is new, updated, and didn't have that old urine smell that most of the other facilities had. We met with sales and he was very nice and helpful, we thought wow this is going to be great. Well, it was a nightmare!! My mother was left in soiled (feces) clothing all the time. We would come to see her and have to shower her every time, which was everyday because we visited everyday!! The sheets on her bed were always soiled and never changed. On days where they striped the bed, they would replace them, some of nights there were NO sheets on her bed at all and I would have to go to the laundry room to get her sheets and put them on myself. The floor in her room had feces all over it, which we have photo's of. The residents are locked out of their rooms unless they are sleeping and the common area bathrooms are pretty hidden..Since my mother couldn't find the bathroom and they did not take my mother to the bathroom she ended up just going in her pants. She came into the Blake in regular underwear and within 2 weeks was completely incontinent. Funny part is, whenever she was taken out for a day visit with us she never had an accident . She ended up coming down with 2 UTI's and the worst raw rash in her private area. It took them 10 days to get UTI test the first time and the second one my sister took her to urgent care because between the UTI and rash, my mother need emergency attention. Most of the PA staff were completely rude to the patients and family. It was like, we were inconveniencing to ask for basic care. The staff would sit around on their cell phones not even paying attention to the residents. They would yell at the residents all the time.. As I said before, they keep the residents doors locked at all times and the residents are not allowed to go in their own rooms. Once, there were a couple resident is one of the rooms and one of the PA staff started yelling at them to" get out and that they know better than that".. Well, guess what? they don't, they have alzheimer's.. I realize alzheimer's can be frustrating but they, the residents can't help it. The final straw was when one of the staff twisted my mother's arm in front of my sister and another staff. Thank goodness the staffer was an honest person and spoke up to her superior. That Abusive staffer was let go, but she was a manager and can you imagine what happened there when no one was around, if that happened in front of my sister.. Now the food, it looks like bad 1970's TV dinner food, NOT restaurant quality food!! Frozen crap that they would heat up, I would be ashamed to call myself a chef and the Blake.. My family and I have tried to contact the corporate office and have never heard back. I called Phil Benjamson myself and also have heard nothing.. You pay a $3000 community fee and if they don't live up to their end of the deal, you're still out your $3000.. Now, I have had to come up with another 3k to put her somewhere else. After only 6 weeks, they should apologize and give me back the community fee at the very least.. Since, I have not heard back, I will be calling the state!!! because no one should ever go through this, EVER!!!! SHAME ON THEM!!!
