My mother is currently a resident at Brookdale Elizabeth City. My biggest issue is with communication. Several things are prompting me to remove my mother from there in the next few weeks. I would recommend this facility to others if the resident didn't have any major health issues.

Complete guide to nursing homes

Moyock, North Carolina

Nursing Homes

A nursing home is a facility that houses two or more seniors who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. A nursing home facility provides its occupants with 24-hour care administered by on-site nurses. These nurses provide specialized care for those who cannot properly take care of their own needs.

Nursing homes can be a familiar and comfy living alternative for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will usually accept individuals 55 and greater which is unusual for other senior care types. Some services come at an extra cost which can include cosmetic and grooming items, a private room, unless medically needed, and specially prepared food. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to make complaints, form or participate in resident groups, be treated with respect, and be free from abuse and neglect. Types of care services and amenities offered at nursing homes might include meal programs, senior centers, monitoring of medication, and social and recreational activities. The most frequent mental disease effecting residents of nursing homes is dementia, which can hinder their decision making capacities, memory function, and and familiarity with their surroundings. Nursing homes are required to provide specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), medically-related social services, dietary services, and pharmaceutical services to residents.
