TerraBella Pheasant Ridge in Roanoke, VA
5.0

They were always ready to answer any questions I had my mom is currently in her own home, but if the time comes when she has to have assisted living, I would have my mom go to Terra Bella Pheasant Ridge. I honestly think that the staff made my mom feel at home.

Friendship Salem Terrace
4.1

My mom and dad needed separate living, as Dad is incontinent and has increasing dementia, and Mom was not physically able to see to his needs 24/7, as required. This was the best fit for them. The rent for a small apartment and a memory care room is very high, however, almost double the cost of a two bedroom apartment in other facilities. The staff are super nice, but the RN is not on call at night, and extraordinary (though not real emergency) medical needs must be handled by an ER visit. The facilities are very nice, and overall the experience is much like living in a nice hotel. The memory care unit is bright and clean and comfortable, and the staff are very good with the special needs of their residents. It is excellent for my dad's needs, and my mom can spend as much time with him as she likes, often eating her meals with him. The same company provides physical therapy for him, and his strength and abilities are greatly improved. We think Salem Terrace was the best solution for my parents' particular needs, and fortunately they can afford it. Had it been possible we might have paid less for them to live in one apartment elsewhere, with comparable services.

Independent Living

Independent Living Communities provide seniors with a convenient balance between living an independent lifestyle and not having to concern themselves with housekeeping. Daily needs such as meal planning and the scheduling of social activities are taken care of, which permits residents more opportunities to live their lives as they wish. Along with their daily needs being met, residents can enjoy an opportunity to live among peers, surrounded by others of similar age groups and interests. Typically consisting of a private living area and a full kitchen, these communities offer homes with many of the amenities of apartment life but with none of the hassle. Guests can be invited over and entertained, and there will be more time to spend with them with the basic maintenance of daily tasks out of the way. While policies vary between locations, numerous residences allow cats and dogs as well. Nursing and health care services may always be arranged for with private care providers as desired. There are a number of benefits and expenses to balance while determining an independent living community. It is important to figure out if these services are included in your plan: private phone, transportation, initial assessment fee, cable TV, meals, move-in fee, utilities, and housekeeping. The luxuries that pertain to independent living include concierge services, community activities, golf course, game/TV room, fitness center & swimming pool, transportation, private rental hall, and restaurant-style dining hall.
