I wanted to do a shout out to Avalon. My step-mum has been in Assisted Living there for over 18 months and both she and are family are extremely happy. My step Mum has moderate dementia , but is still quite upbeat and independent. She was in another local and pricier AL that was purchased and went drastically down hill. Avalon was our solution. The food is good, she and her apartment are clean and the staff is friendly and responsive- especially since [name removed] became the Director! The activity director [name removed] comes up with extra fun activities and field trip and does a fabulous job getting my Mum involved. Friday entertainment is another big hit! [name removed], the business manager works miracles with her Long Term Care company, assuring that they actually pay out on time each month. And trust me, they can ask us to jump through hoops at times. Just a few reasons and staff that have inspired me to recommend Avalon to friends and write multiple positive reviews.... Read more

Great Community, Great People.

One of the most beautiful living communities I have visited (and I visit many). It is kept as clean and fresh as a 5-star hotel - you will notice this from the moment you walk in. What truly sets the Avalon of Auburn Hills apart from other communities is their team! A very special “shout out” to health services director [name removed], and executive director [name removed] for assembling and maintaining such a special team.

Family Facility

I am a memory care caregiver at the Avalon of Auburn Hills. The residents and staff are very close in this building, making every experience a family one. I love working here and the relationships I have made with staff and residents here are some of the greatest I have had the pleasure of creating. I am very proud to work in such an amazing place, and would highly recommend this facility to anyone looking for a place to call home.

A nice community with some room for improvement.

Many things were missing from my husband's room and we were unable to retrieve all of them. The person across the hall had a lot of things in her room. At least we were able to retrieve those! For the memory care unit. The unit just seemed depressing, hard to judge how clean. Staff very friendly, helpful. I was away, and had to text director to get staff to take him outside. His visitors reported that he was either sitting by himself or pacing the halls. I found him walking upset in halls when I picked him up. I don't know about meal because my husband is unable to remember anything about them. Did not get any feedback on activities. Did get one text with a picture of him on the putting green outside. He did not want to be there, kept trying to leave, so I don't think he was off the locked unit much. If he could have stayed in assisted living, I would have thought the value for money was a 5. Although the staff in memory care was very good, I'm not sure there were enough to give the care I wanted for him.

Facility feedback

I have recommended people consider The Avalon of Auburn Hills. The facility is nice, clean, and modern. The food was fair, it may be better for those that can go to the main dining room. My mom ate on her floor, in Memory Care dining, that had food brought up. The staff is mostly good. We visited often so, communication with the family was frequent. I would recommend soft flooring in the bathroom for patients who have a tendency to fall.

Would Recommend

I think The Avalon of Auburn Hills is a very clean and modern facility, which I really appreciate. Our whole family has been impressed with the facility, yet It's still a very warm and family-like atmosphere. Overall I think the care of our family member is good. We've had to talk with them a few times about her diet. Sometimes that communication wasn't getting to their dietary department. Coordination of that took some time, but we finally did get it resolved.

Our families experience

From a facility standpoint we do think it is very nice, relatively new, clean and modern. The size of the rooms are probably amongst the best we had seen. You could pick between a one bedroom or a two bedroom that had a separate living area. The staff are certainly friendly and try very hard which is a big positive - we do think when it comes to memory care they could use a little more training. The meal arrangement's are nice, the dining area is nice and they all eat together. It is a single price, nothing that is nickel and dime it is all inclusive. We would recommend them to other families

Pandemic compounded care issues.

Let me preface my remarks by saying that the pandemic made operating of any of these assisted living places difficult. There was instances of long wait times & mom hesitated to press her button for any small thing: she starting doing most everything herself, including the bathroom, which is a liability issue. Mom was at a 3rd level of care, but rate should have been adjusted as she became more self sufficient; a reappraisal was not done. Expired food was found on shelves & in her mini fridge. Laundry was not sorted (whites got dingy from mixed loads), food in dining room was not geared towards senior's diets (onions, cruciferous vegs like broccoli that are hard to digest). They did help with a GF diet. Mom moved out with another person's meds; Mom had side effects from taking wrong meds for 10 days. Medtechs are basically kids dispensing meds. Upon moving out, it was found that 227. in items were missing, though things were marked. We are owed pro rata rent of 2.7+K 10 wks later.

General Overview

They haven't disappointed me yet. As long as you're involved and ask a lot of questions, you should be fine. The staff are pretty good. Sometimes in the afternoon/early evening I don't see a lot of staff around. The food is fine. They have a lot do as far as activities, and they try all the time to get my loved one involved.

Our families experience

We do know it was during covid and it was before the employment situation with any care givers got to critical shortages. There were some decent employees, 3 out of the 4 receptionist were very helpful, but once was cold and not helpful. Some of the care staff were top notch people, but the director of nursing was not. We could visit them inside a complete glass box only, we did not have access to our loved ones apartment. House keeping did not change our loved ones beds for 2 months. Not confident in their care at all.

What You See Isn't What You Get

They have a set meal plan, and they don't give an additional choice if the resident doesn't like what is served. The community has a lot of turnover of staff. The activities director is awesome, and tries to get my loved one involved in activities. The front desk attendants are wonderful. If the current Executive Director was there a year ago, I wouldn't have put my loved one in this community. I am currently looking for a new community for my loved one.

Window Dressing Not Much Substance

I wasn't impressed with the community. They ignored my loved one and brought the meals to them due to the pandemic. They only tried half-hearted to engage my loved on with activities. The food looked like Gordon foods. It didn't seem that the community put little effort into the meals during the pandemic. The dining room food was better, prior to COVID. I was able to do window visits, this was the highlight of the stay here.

Beautiful Community, But Lacked Follow Through In Leadership

Most of the staff are very caring; however, they don't keep track of a lot of their employees. The care for the residents than lacks due to this. The communication wasn't good within the community when I had to call for my loved one.

The Avalon of Auburn Hills offers Studio, 1 Bedroom and 2 Bedrooms. Learn more.

A Place for Mom has scored The Avalon of Auburn Hills 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
