I thought Orchard at Brookhaven was a nice facility. I was not as impressed with the people who worked there. Also it was on Buford Hwy, which is a really busy street, and the road noise inside the apartments was pretty loud.
We chose the Orchard for my grandmother after she had fallen in her other assisted living home and needed more care. It was hard picking a place during the pandemic site unseen, but we felt this would be the best place for her from talking with them and hearing what they had to offer. From day one it was a horrible experience. She needed memory care, and we weren’t told until after she moved in that she was in regular assisted living because that’s where they had a room available. Because of covid we weren’t allowed to visit her, but when we finally got to see her we were shocked at how she had declined, and nothing was shared with us. Her legs were swollen and draining, and her toenails were so long they were growing into her skin. We had a long talk with the head nurse, and she said because of the pandemic they couldn’t allow anyone in to cut her toenails, although the hair salon was open. Finally they said there was one person who could come cut them, but when she came she got mad because we asked for a picture when she was done. She left without cutting her nails. She was supposed to get rehab services but got no physical therapy because her legs were so swollen, but we were not told that until after the fact. We were told by the nurse and the director that we would start getting weekly updates on my grandmother’s health, and that only happened once. My mother had set up a teledoc appointment and asked the nurse to be there for the call since we couldn’t be, and she acted annoyed and said she had other meetings. She left an aide in there for the call who knew nothing about my grandmother’s condition. My grandmother had a hard time at night so they decided to let her sleep in a recliner in the common area so more people could keep an eye on her. They said she would sleep there every night, but because they had some positive cases of covid they put her back in her room without telling us. She was found in the middle of the night on the ground because she had fallen out of bed and died three days later. When my brother and I went to clean out her room, no one showed us any compassion or sympathy that we had just lost a loved one. The director called me an hour after moving her stuff out to ask me to drop off a check for her outstanding bill. The lack of care my grandmother received was heartbreaking, and I wish we would have never sent her there.
