Care services - There have been occasions when I have asked for a wellness check because I couldn't get a hold of the resident on her cell, and it took me calling back to get any news. A land line in the room did not seem to be much of an option two ago. The cost of minimum care beyond residency will be over [fee removed] in January. That is way too high of a cost for someone living independently and just needs a presence, in case of a fall, while they shower completely on their own. The resident pulled the emergency string in her room because her cell phone was not working and she could not walk. It took 30 minutes for someone to arrive. The staff could not have known what the emergency was so 30 minutes is shockingly long to respond. There had been a change in ownership to Grossmont Gardens, and the food service has significantly gone down hill. The choices are few, repetitive, and the service in the dining room can be painfully slow. Understaffing and high turnover seem to be a problem.... Read more

The grounds here are absolutely beautiful.Everything is currently in bloom. They offer a fenced in pool and several fruit trees. My mother's room is nicely sized and she has her own patio on the first floor. Grossmont was the first community we looked at and it seemed to be the one that offered the most of what we were looking for.

I toured this community and really liked the staff who were nice and friendly. The community I found to be clean and well maintained. The did have a nice variety of health meals. The list of activities was helpful to the residents. I would recommend that families tour the community for the care of a loved one.

I am very pleased to say that our choice of Grossmont Gardens for the care of my brother has been confirmed;-) I have been impressed with all categories provided by GG. Employees are friendly and very caring. In a time where my brothers best interests were at stake, we made a great choice. I do need to get him more involved in activities but over all he is very happy.

My loved one's son toured this community and really liked it. They were all set to be her in but when they assessed her, they said they could not take her.

I toured this community when looking for a friend. The lady who was supposed to give me a tour wasn't there. I waited then finally someone else showed me this room and I didn't even know where the exit was. There was no parking. The best way to describe it is I spent a lot of time in the Philippines and it was like being there again. They were cooking in the dark with no lights and the overall atmosphere was not appealing.

Response from Grossmont Gardens
September 27, 2017We are so sorry to hear this. Our top priority is the well being of our residents. Our mission is dedicated to enriching the lives of the individuals who live and work with us. With that said, we do have new management in place and we are more confident than ever that we will continue to enrich the lives of others. Again, I am sorry to hear this has been a difficult experience for you.
We liked this place--it is very pretty, lovely grounds. The main reason we didn't choose it was that the assisted living people are separate from the others, in a building away from the main one, and there are not as many folks to interact with, without a trek.

The Grossmont Gardens was nice but needed some updating. The staff and residents were all very friendly and the tour guide took us around the building.

My mother was only at this community for a short period of time but I was not impressed at all with the care they provided my mother. They did nothing to help her improve her dementia and she was just left wandering the halls of the building throughout her days. When we moved Mom there, we were asked if she was an "exit-seeker," and said "No." But how do you know until it happens? One day she simply walked out the front door with no staff in sight to help her out; luckily she didn't fall and walked up a hill to the main office, where I was contacted and told she needed to be moved immediately to a secure memory-care facility, as if it was our fault she had strayed. Overall I was not impressed and would not recommend this place to anyone with memory loss.

I had a tour of this community for my grandmother and was not very impressed at all. Everything looked like an old broke down apartment building that had been abandon. All of the studios where so tiny and also had many cracks inside and out of the apartment floor. It would not be safe for anyone who was hard at walking or needed further assistance to get around. I also did not care for how separated everything was . You had to go outside into a different building just to get the dinning room as well as other areas. I would just never want her living in a place like this.

My parents moved out of this community. Unfortunately it wasn't good fit for them and their needs. The community is nice, and everyone was kind and friendly. They really tired their best to care for them. It was a good experience, and this would be a nice community for the right person.

The staff was excellent and very kind during our tour, they gave us a lot of useful information of the community. It was our first choice until I found out that they had no transportation for residents in wheelchairs. My loved one would not be able to participate in any field trips, and would not be provided a ride to any doctor appointments.

When we first moved our parent into GG, we had high hopes for a pleasant experience. From the beginning, though, there were disappointments & frustrations. That was over 2 years ago. The buildings are old and in need of maintenance/repair ie chips/cracks in the walkways that could cause trips or falls, stinky elevators, cheap blinds in the rooms, drawers that are low and hard to pull out, making it hard for the unstable on their feet, dirty carpets in residents' rooms, etc. There wasn't an orientation for new residents to give them a good start in their new community (ie how laundry service works, when housekeeping will pay them a visit, how to ring for the nurse, how to operate the heater and AC, description of activities and encouragement to participate, how much guests' meals cost, etc.) A buddy system would have been really helpful the first week. Then the unreturned calls when we needed various information. The nursing staff was especially friendly & helpful though. Others in the community often answered questions vaguely. When the elderly are feeling insecure & overwhelmed about losing their independence & their children are hoping mom or dad is comfortable, content & secure, clear, concise communication & direction provides much-needed support to the family, which we really needed. That was lacking at GG and at times, we felt very much alone. And we still do, so we wouldn't recommend GG to others. Look elsewhere to find a place that runs efficiently, smoothly by a cohesive team that is organized, helpful and friendly.

My mother is doing very well here at this facility. It is a very well-kept community, my mother is pleased with the cleanliness. The staff have been very helpful and kind. There are many activities for her to participate in, she has tired a few. The food is okay, it isn't best, but it is a well balanced meal. The servers are pleasant and really try their best. I know she is safe and being cared for well. I would recommend this facility.

I'am very happy knowing my mother is pleased with this community. They have been very welcoming and helpful, the staff is great. The community is well-kept, they do a good job of keeping everything nice and clean. She is trying many activities they offer like shopping trips, and yoga classes. The food is good, but she would like more of a selection to choose from. They are caring for her very well and I would recommend it.

I feel this community was misleading. I have an odd illness and when the manufacturers stopped providing the medication there was no other alternative. I have a diet of no gluten, dairy, and eggs and there was no alternative food. I didn't like the staff's attire, they wore black clothing. The dinning room was not always open and I noticed there were not many close restrooms. Overall I feel I was mislead in the beginning.

I would recommend this community as it is one of the few communities in the area that offer convalescent care and injectables. They offer activities however my friend does not yet participate in them. The building is clean and well taken care of. The only thing I have a small concern about is the staff does not seem to respond to residents calls in a timely manner.

My loved one has been here in assisted living for 3 weeks. So far her care has been good. The staff all seem to know her from as soon as she moved in. She says they treat her well and everyone is very nice. My only critique is that we(three of us who take care of her) were not told about basic procedures regarding nurse procedures and doctor visits, because we have been seeing a few doctors these past weeks. Also, no one came to welcome her as a new resident. I would have thought someone would have been there to make her feel more at ease.

A Place for Mom has scored Grossmont Gardens 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
