Overall experience-4. it was clean, the people were kind and mom felt loved and cared for, but the food was not great. Friendliness of staff 5. There was a fair bit of turnover and ownership changes, but each time the people were great. Quality of care 5. They loved mom and she felt well looked after. Meals. 2-3. Started out at two. Then the company changed hands and the food improved a great deal. Nonetheless, it wasn't so great. Sometimes they would run out of things. Some of the quality was mediocre. Activities. Mom didn't care about any of those so I really can't say. She wasn't really engaging in that sort of thing at that time. Unless you like bingo, the options were limited . Value for cost 5. They weren't the cheapest and they weren't the most expensive. If we had paid more, we might've had better food. The cost was definitely fair and we got good care. I visited places that cost the same or more that were much less desirable. One of the real pluses about Greatwood was the size of the rooms for the cost. Mom got two good sized rooms with a small kitchen wall. The floor plan was open and had enough room for a small table plus a desk in addition to the living room. This way she could keep a lot of her furniture and it felt more like her house. The bathroom was spacious and clean. She had two decent sized closets.... Read more

Mom is enjoying her apartment there and is involved in some of their activities. We picked this community because mom is close to both my brother, niece and myself.

We were sold that the monthly “rate” was all inclusive and it would not increase as more care would be needed; well within 2 months additional fees started to be added and priced my dad out of what he could afford. The meals were less than desirable and the residents were required to circle the meal and when you are shaking I’m sure the service staff had to guess what was being chosen. There were 3 different cooks in the 2 & 1/2 months he was there. The direct told me I should not email her as she just forwards them to handles it and I should take more cards so I can email the correct person. I shouldn’t have to figure out who handles what and felt she should be aware of what was going on.

Response from Greatwood at Sugar Land
October 23, 2024The down side of the review platform is that it doesn't allow for the other side of the story to be presented. The truth therefore is not able to be accurately presented. Due to this review involving an employee and residents of the community, Greatwood is prohibited from presenting any facts. We believe our responsibility to protect private information far outweighs the opinions of an individual. We encourage anyone to come tour and visit the community to judge for yourself.
The day staff was wonderful. The night staff let my mom fall without checking on her for several hours. She laid on the floor for many hours. My brother found her in the early morning hours propped up in her bed but severely injured from her fall in the night. She was well and healthy on Friday and dead on Monday. NOT ONE GOOD RECOMMENDATION!

I would say to stay away from Greatwood. It was a very different place when we first put mom there but within months things started to change for the worse and they haven't gotten better.

June 13, 2024We apologize for your poor impression of the community. The down side of the review platform is that it doesn't allow for the other side of the story to be presented. Unfortunately we are unable to substantiate your concerns without additional details. We have several different avenues to voice a grievance whether in person, by phone, to the Corporate Office, through the ombudsman, or the State governing authority. We are not aware of any grievances, but would like to follow up with your concerns. Please feel free to reach out to us to discuss more in detail. We would appreciate the opportunity to improve your experience.
The staff was generally pretty good. They know their patients and are good at engaging them. [name removed] did not like the food, but that's most likely due to low salt. She was so far gone at that point, I'm not sure she would have liked anything. She was only there 11 weeks before she died and 3 of them were in the hospital. Their cleaning staff was not very good, but in all fairness, [name removed] was a slob and had 2 cats she couldn't care for. I think the staff was kind of shocked and sad when she died.

My dad wasn't very happy he moved out after a month. He needed more care than what was being provided. His friend said they have a low staffing issue. I think it's good for independent living. I wouldn't want a loved one there for the end of life time frame.

Greatwood has been fantastic, very caring staff. Has gotten my dad to the best condition he's been in years. My mom had me write a letter for 30 day notice, but she has now retracted that desire. There is an additional cost of meals brought to room. My mom and dad don't participate in the activities, yet but my 16 year old had her grandmother play bingo with her and had fun and even won3 times! Upon entering into facility, they gave me a great deal including waving community cost

It's been a great experience so far. It was perfectly located between family members and within a few minutes of her doctors. The initial visit was extremely informational and the staff seemed attentive and forthcoming.

I cannot even begin to explain how incredibly friendly the whole staff is at Greatwood at Sugar Land. I'm always greeted with a smile. The staff is so so friendly and always accommodating. The food is very good and both of my parents are so very happy. There are plenty of activities to keep your loved one occupied and the residents are very welcoming to new residents joining in. I'm so happy to have chosen this facility for my parents. I would definitely recommend this facility to others.

June 30, 2023Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of Greatwood at Sugar Land. We love our residents and we are so very grateful that you are a part of our Community Family! Please don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything that we can do to improve our care and services for our residents or team!
The people have been very patient and helpful with a challenging resident. The nursing staff has been really good. My loved one has some concerns with the cleaning service. But she expects them to do things like wash dishes and clean the cat box which are not on their list of things to do.

Response from Greatwood at Sugar Land
May 23, 2023Hello. Thank you so much for taking the time to submit a review of our performance. We are happy that you have been able to observe our performance and find it to exceed expectations in multiple areas. I will certainly share this with our team as they work hard to ensure all of our residents are loved and cared for and that they live in a community that they are proud to call home. We will continue to improve so thank you for the comments about housekeeping. If you have a moment please address those concerns with the Executive Director to see how we can better meet her expectation. Thank you again!
I like that the staff were professional but also very down to earth and approachable. Like that the Independent and Assisted Living buildings were connected and shared a cafeteria. This means if your friend or spouse has to move to Assisted Living they still can have meals with their friend/family. Plus all meals have to meet stricter dietary requirements. The other facility my Mom lived in they had several friends move to Assisted Living and never got to see them again. I like the fact the cafeteria can be reached without going outside. Other places we looked at you had to walk outside some distance. I know that would have caused her to skip some meals. Yes I would recommend this place to others and I in fact have recommend it to several people.

The community is chronically understaffed. The kitchen is unresponsive to resident dietary needs while in Assisted Living and Independent Living areas of the community. Greatwood lost their Director of 23 years on [date removed]. Next Director, [name removed], did a "slash and burn" of staff, policies and services. She left [date removed]. Corporate sent another Director for a month or so. Current Director, [name removed] came [date removed] and has improved quality of food and amount served. He is well liked. Yesterday we got a letter that Greatwood has a new owner, that promises to "maintain the high quality of care and services that have always been provided at Greatwood. Here come more changes! My sister-in-law has been sick with GI symptoms for several weeks. She stated that many residents were also sick. While having these symptoms and notifying the kitchen, The meal that was delivered one morning for her breakfast was : sausage, bread and a bag of potato chips. It has been a roller-coaster ride for our family for the past 7 1/2 months. I understand the economic forces that Greatwood has been dealing with, but I do not feel that the residents have been kept informed, or considered a priority. I do not think it has been a good value and we are looking into other facilities for my sister in law.

The people are terrific. They are just so great. They they have treated us great. The food is not great, and it is a bit bland. They don't offer, a lot of fresh produce such as veggies-fruits. They offer a lot for the value of money. It's all inclusive, and it's a very good price. They went out of there way, to make my loved one feel welcomed ,included and helped to my loved one to make adjustments.

Greatwood is fantastic. Sometimes my mom complains about the food, but it's just a lifestyle change for her. She seems to be enjoying it there, and it's a good place for her. She's safe, well taken care of, and looked out for. They have a lot of activities and are always involved with their residents. I would recommend it to other families for their loved ones.

Greatwood is a nice facility, but the staff did not seem very engaged. It felt more nursing home like and everything was enclosed which is why my loved ones did not choose this facility.
