[name removed] very nice along with other staff members we met/saw. Rooms somewhat smaller than other communities visited, not appt of closet space. Not particularly fond of the companion suites (one room, 2 twins and 1-bthrm) - no privacy for resident. Also the singles had 1/2-bath with shower & bath rooms on hall. l did like that they grow some of the leafy vegetables & herbs in a hydroponic system for use in meals. Residents were involved pre-covid era. Also, the utilization of dolls & stuffed animals in the memory care for the ladies was a nice touch, along with individual headsets with playlists specific to each resident another good idea. I understand the benefit/precaution of separating men & women in the memory care unit, but it may not be best for my relative. The security of needing a code to enter/leave the memory care unit is secure. The grounds are nice, and once covid-19 passes will be enjoyable for all. I toured later in the day, so there wasn't much hustle and bustle amongst the residents as seen at other communities. All in all an okay community.

I think it is a very competent facility. They do a great job taking care of their residents .Just like any facility they had a hanging onto staff. Room sizes are large. The food was great. They have limited private rooms. Commonwealth Senior Living is well worth the cost. It is nice to have the option of bringing your own furnishings or having them furnish the room.I liked that they had men and women in separate areas.

Response from Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton
September 6, 2019We're so glad you are happy! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Providing top-notch care along with consistent and engaging activities seems to be difficult for many memory care facilities. CSL-Hampton so far is one of the best that I have seen. The senior staff has taken time to listen to my concerns, and, more importantly, has worked toward instituting positive improvements. The patience and kindness among most of the front-line caregivers is great, a testament to their training and professionalism. 4.5 stars... my loved one is really thriving here!

The staff, except for a few, at CSL seem to genuinely care about the residents and their benefit. However, the staff needs to leave their cellphones at home or in the main office and pay more attention to the residents. There is too much noise and chatter coming from the nursing staff and medical management could be improved. Several times the staff failed to give my wife her prescribed antibiotics and heart medication. The food and presentation is quite good given the amount of different diets and preferences, They have gone through 3-4 activities persons in the last 7 months which takes away from the socialization and participation of the residents,

November 14, 2018Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. At Commonwealth Senior Living, we strive to improve the lives of seniors and their families every day. It sounds like we need to improve the experience that you and your wife have had. I would love to speak with you about your concerns directly. Please email me at your convenience. I can be reached at [removed]. I look forward to speaking with you soon! - Shalene Hart, Executive Director
Commonwealth Sr Living has very friendly staff members who seem to try to do the best they can. As with any other health care facilities, it is only as good as the worst staff member and keeping good caring nursing aides is hard to do. CSL could improve their services by taking away the cell phones that are carried by the nursing staff as they seem to be spending way too much time on them and not on the residents. The floors and common areas could use more deep cleaning and the staff could use more training in making beds, cleaning the residents and administering medications. The food is good considering they are cooking for a wide array of diets and preferences. The fees are better than other facilities and the building has a warm welcoming atmosphere.

November 16, 2018Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with families who are researching care. While we do pride ourselves in having a friendly team and warm environment, we recognize that the cellphone usage is a problem. Our leadership team is working on coaching as well as disciplinary action. As always, we appreciate feedback and are always available to discuss concerns with families. Please reach out to me anytime at your convenience by email at [removed], and thank you for entrusting us with the care of your loved one!- Shalene Hart, Executive Director.
So far, so good---the staff is very helpful and courteous and the facility is very quiet and clean. However, I was expecting a higher lever of activities to keep the residents involved. It has only been inside a week, so maybe this will change.

Be very careful ! You have to stay on top of the staff and make sure they are taking care of your loved ones. The staff gives the appearance they are attentive when you are there. You need to check on your loved one EVERYDAY to make sure they are properly cared for. There was food behind my loved ones bed, they give them medication to make them sleep ALL day. This will cause pressure sores. Do not take your loved ones to the facility

I visited this community a couple of months in search for a safe, comfortable and supportive place for my mother after losing my father. She, understandably, has been struggling with the loss of my father; the love of her life and husband of nearly 60 years. She and I both were nervously anticipating even exploring options, but we both knew she didn’t emotionally need to be alone. I can tell you, this process isn’t easy. But after some online research, I made my first call. I was instantly greeted by the warmest, happiest woman on the other end of the phone (forgive me, I didn’t catch her name) and she immediately set the tone. She transferred me to a gentleman name [Removed], who graciously listened as I rambled on and on. He invited me for a visit and I fell in love with the community. Everyone seemed so happy, and I saw my mother quietly smile and light up as person after person greeted her, and residents went out of their way to say hello. The facility is gorgeous. The food was delicious. These things are important. But what you cannot quantify is how you feel when there. It’s alive, and my mother felt it too. It is safe, warm and you immediately get the sense of belonging. I wish I could say my mother is thriving there, having found a new sense of purpose in this next chapter of life. However, I cannot. Our mother is amazing, and I am one of 3 children spread out across the country, and I (and Mom) was outvoted. I will tell you this, if the opportunity arises for her to live in VA, there is no other choice than this community. We ended up visiting several places, with each never quite measuring up to Commonwealth. We just wish they were in other states! You won’t go wrong with this community. I encourage anyone who is looking for themselves, a parent or relative, to really Center yourself and imagine living in the community. Look past the decor and pay attention to how you feel, and do the residents look happy? Are they content or HAPPY? There is a difference, and Commonwealth of Hampton gets that.

The facility was very clean and staff knew the residents by name. I had the opportunity to see other visitors visiting with family members and all seemed to be happy. I would recommend the facility to any one.

My sister in-law moved into Commonwealth on July 10th. It is clean, friendly, has more activities than one can keep up with and has a great staff. Couldn't ask for more.

I have no complaints about the tour I had received at this community. The staff was very welcoming and greeted my family and I with a smile and open arms. I thought that the facility was nicely maintained and had a lot of great amenities they offered to there residents. It was just unfortunately not the right budget and fit for my mother.

I am very happy with the care the employees show for every resident. This is the second Assisted Living Facility my Father has been to and here they get him out of his room to participate in the activities. He is definitely happier here. The nurses are always very happy and make a point of making us feel welcome. His room is always neat and because they are aware of his problem with falling they check on him more often, He loves the food and the attention he gets!

My father has not been in the Commonwealth Assisted Living long enough for me to give a fair review yet. He went there [Removed]. So far he is happy there and we think the ladies that work there are very friendly and helpful. He was moved from another Assisted Living Community and I thought that one was very good at first but ended up being very disappointed. I would like to wait a little longer before I give my opinion.

I feel that my mom is getting the right care and is safe at this community. They do a good job cleaning the place. The staff are very friendly and I sense that they care about the residents. I like all the people and they know everyone's first name. They have activities to keep them busy, like bible study. Once a month they have a family night with dinner and activities. It is a brightly lit with people walking around. This place is wonderful.

Men and women are segregated. Locked unit on first floor with access to outdoor courtyard. Small unit, but many activities. Noticeably loud due to patients. Slight odor when walking through bedroom halls.

They're very pleasant, they always speak to me when I come in. The meals are always on time, the food looks fine. They have a lot of activities, the director keeps something going every day. I'm very pleased with the whole situation. I'm very happy with the place, it takes a lot of stress off of me concerning his care. I've had no complaints.

Most of what I have seen about Commonwealth Assisted Living at Hampton has been good, but there is some area for improvement. I really like the facility. It is very nice, warm, welcoming, and well kept. The food sometimes is not as warm as it should be when it comes out. The rooms are well kept for the most part. They can be a little slow answering the buzzer when I come to visit. Sometimes I can be standing outside waiting for twenty minutes or more. Most of the staff is very good, but then there are others that need to step up their game.
