Just a note to say how much my family loves Chester Street. The care that her loving caregivers give my mom is beyond anything we could have hoped for at this stage of her life. [name removed] and his son, [name removed], are simply tremendous and admired and appreciated by the staff. Chester St. Residence is truly a hidden gem for caring for older people with compassion.

Response from Chester Street Residence
August 16, 2021Thank you so much for your feedback! It is our joy and privilege to take care of our Residents and make this chapter of their lives enjoyable!
Our dear friend moved into Chester Street when she could no longer live at home. As an older couple, we were not able to visit as often as we liked. When we did visit, it was a very comfortable and nice place. The staff knew us by name and made us feel welcome when visiting. The best part was our friend was happy in her new home. You could tell she was able to make new friends with the other residents and the aides who took care of her. We always enjoyed our visits with her and felt good she was well care for there.

I highly highly recommend this facility. My Dad has bad dementia and moved in when he could no longer care for himself in his senior apartment. All the staff from the maintenance worker, aides, nurses, cook, director and owners bend over backwards to make your loved one feel well cared for, mentally stimulated and happy. The Director [name removed] is the most kindest, knowledgeable and helpful Director/person I have ever met. The residence is a small 50 room place that was renovated before opening 8 years ago. Because it is small all the workers including the owners get to know all the residents. Most of the staff have been there from the beginning so the care is very consistent. Sadly on [date removed] my Dad passed away of non Covid illness. Chesterfield was very quick to stop unessential visitation the minute MI had their first Covid case so I had not seen my Dad in person for his last 3 weeks of life but I know that if I couldn’t be there he was in the best place he could be.

We recently needed to find alternative living for our mother whose dementia had impacted her independence. Chester Street Residence (CSR) is a wonderful facility. It is clean, does not have the typical assisted facility smell, feels open and is not overly ornate, but comfortable. Our mother's apartment is a perfect size for her and doesn't feel confining. Before writing this review, I read the 3 negative reviews and provided, and while one was a circumstantial situation, the other two presented situations we have not seen. Our experience has been as good as this sort of situation can be. The move in was easy. Whenever we have had a question or concern, we get good follow-up. We've had a few very minor glitches along the way and it's not a perfect world, but for anyone in this situation, I would strongly recommend Chester Street Residence. They offer a new family to help your family deal with the unexpected changes life throws at you. The staff is exceptional. Even when we randomly turned up for tours, they were open, informative and very friendly. Since our mom has lived there, they've continued to be kind, efficient, friendly and adaptable to our mom's needs and quirks. They will relate stories when we come in and she speaks very fondly of them. Turnover is minimal which indicates that CSR is taking care of their staff so their staff can take care of the residents. Our mother did not want this move from her home and expressed that to us. Recently, her comment was that, if she had to live someplace other than her home, this was about as nice as it could be. It is a gift for us to know she is loved and cared for and safe. We feel fortunate to be part of the Chester Street Residence family.

I am in the healthcare industry and found it challenging to find a place that could care for my dad's needs and make my family happy at the same time. When we toured Chester Street we felt like we were home. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. They did not know we were coming and we were impressed by the cleanliness of the building and the resident rooms. The staff was accommodating to all of our requests and needs and we were never told we "couldn't" do something. That made it easy for us to move dad into Chester Street. Dad has since passed away, but I often visit the community for work and always consistently found happy, energetic staff. That takes incredible leadership and teamwork to maintain skilled, compassionate staff.

Chester Street Residence is an assisted care and memory care facility. There are mostly memory impaired residents there. My husband has friendly, kind, patient care givers who understand dementia very well. The facility is managed well and every effort is made to have a friendly, family like atmosphere. It is 56 bed facility with all private rooms and baths. Clients are encouraged to have their families bring furniture and familiar possessions from home that can make the transition easier for them. Visiting is encouraged and I see many families coming. There are various activities offered weekly. The care assistants are trained to work in teams and I see great team work there. Chester Street uses Visiting Nurse Association for medical care and does not have nurses or doctors in house, but they are there weekly and communication with them is on going. I am satisfied that medical problems are addressed and taken care of promptly. The staff is stable enabling clients to have the same caregivers most of the time. Communication between staff and family is important and I find it very easy to address any worries or concerns with them. Monthly fee is all inclusive but pharmacy medication co-pays are the responsibility of the client and family, as are co-pays for doctors, nurses and medical equipment. Food is tasty and nutritious. Meals are served in the dining room or in client's rooms. During warm weather they often have dinner outside on a nice patio.

My father lived at Chester Street after living in numerous facilities in Macomb and Oakland counties. Some cost twice as much and others were on par with Chester Street, but only cost wise. The staff at Chester Street were the best out of at least 4 other placements. Other facilities would send my father to the hospital alone, often due to injuries. At Chester street he went once, due to a severe infection. The owner at Chester St would go until a family member could get there, so Dad wasn't at the hospital with no one to speak for him as he could not communicate well. Dad could do nothing for himself, the staff took care of him and would visit with him and get him laughing. He could be a little bawdy and they took it in stride. I recommend this facility to everyone that needs that type of care. You can come and go at will. Only downside for me, was the temperature indoors, they keep it cozy for the residents and I run a bit warm. I took in a fan for myself when I was there. Dad passed after being at Chester St. for 9 months, he loved it there and it was easy to get him to Dr appts and out to eat and he was wheelchair bound.

I need to give a huge thank you and highly recommend Chester Street Residence in Royal Oak to anyone faced with putting a family member in assisted living/memory care. 5 days ago my mom was sent to Beaumont. The owner personally called me on Sunday afternoon when moms vitals were not stable. They were on top of this and unlike a year ago (when she was in a different facility) it was caught before she fell and had further injuries. He then went with her to the emergency room and waited with her until I could get there. He has personally reached out daily to check on my mom. This place is beyond phenomenal. The staff is amazing, there is no turnover. My mom is clean and dressed no matter when I visit. Despite her declining dementia, they treat her with dignity and respect. I can’t say enough amazing things. She is on her way back to Chester Street now and I know she will be greeted with tons of hugs from the staff. So huge shout out to [name removed] and his staff for running a first class facility.

We had a truly great experience at Chester Street Residence. My wife's mother passed away a year and a half ago after living there for more than 3 years. The entire staff really got to know who we were and made us feel so appreciated and welcomed during our visits. We were so happy about how they got to know my wife's mother too. In addition to the daily care they provided (even as it got more difficult towards the end of her stay), they managed to keep her spirits up by being more than caregivers but really becoming her friend. After being away for so long after her passing, we stopped in to this year's Holiday Party to say hello. We were so happy we decided to go. The reaction of many staff members who are still there, along with certain Resident's and their family members, made us feel so special. It was as if we were stopping in to celebrate with mom. It brought back so many great memories and made us feel amazing. Everyone who works at Chester Street from the owners and staff along with the people who help in the Kitchen, we want to say Thank You for the past care of our mom and making our recent visit so special!

I have visited Chester Street Residence for several years doing Art Therapy with their residents. I love coming here for so many reasons. The residents are great to work with no matter what type of project or activity I bring that day. The staff are professional and attentive to the residents and always make me feel welcome and appreciated. The Owners are onsite and super easy to work with. They are very active in the community with the residents too. I would definitely recommend looking here if your loved one needs an assisted living or memory care community!

I visited several in the area before entering Chester Street Residence. The owner greeted me at the door. I was immediately impressed with his concern for what he obviously knew what I was going through looking for a long term care facility for a loved one. He took me through the entire facility and introduced me to several residents who all seemed sincerely happy with their surroundings. I was apprehensive about visiting this particular structure due to a trip there as a grade school student on a field trip. People were in cinder block walled rooms with vinyl floors. The halls were the same and several elderly, very confused people were wandering around in different states of undress. The odors were overpowering. This is no longer the case. It appears as if you are entering a very nice hotel lobby and everything is professionally drywalled, painted very welcoming neutral colors, and it's all trimmed with elegant wood moldings. The rooms are very spacious, private, and clean. Each room has a private spacious bathroom with all of the ADA requirements met. The staff is obviously carefully selected for personality, compassion, and a love for the elderly. There are no bad apples. The entire staff greets me by my first name and have since my first visit. Very respectful people. The owners name is [removed] and he truly has found his calling in life. His son [removed] is a fine young man and he also cares deeply for the comfort of the residents. The neighborhood is quiet, safe and very centrally located. I couldn't be happier

We are very happy and pleased with these people. My loved one has become very content with this place and likes the staff. The staff is wonderful and they have done everything that needs to be done. The community is always clean and neat. The only thing that I would say is there needs to be more activities instead of one per day for a half hour.

Atmosphere is bright and friendly. My mother was a resident here for 2-1/2 years, and I cannot say enough good things about here stay.

Our mom has been at Chester Street now for over 2 years and we are so happy with her home here. At first, we struggled with the decision of moving her to a community where she could get her care needs met versus living in the comfort of her own home. Once we made the decision to move to Chester Street, we quickly realized it was absolutely the right move. The biggest key for us above the quality of care she receives on a daily basis is how everyone cares for not only our mom but everyone who lives here. We see first hand how everyone puts caring into their roles at Chester Street. It shows from the owners to the caregivers to the kitchen staff and even with the maintenance and housekeepers! Most importantly, our mom is genuinely happy which makes us happy. Thank You, Chester Street!

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
