If they could fix some of the issues my loved one has encountered, it would be very good. I picked this community because of the convience. The schedule was reliable. The weekday medicine was delivered on time during the day but the weekend staff didn't seem to be inadequate. There wasn't much in the way of activities on the weekends. I wasn't sure the evening staff delivered all of the proper medication. There was some activities most mornings and afternoons. On occasion the options weren't adequate for everyone's needs or wants.... Read more

There are a few great caregivers at Charter Senior Living. However, this place is one big health crisis. Just this year alone, they have had a bed bugs and scabies outbreak. If you didn't already know, scabies is a parasite that embeds itself in your skin and leads to an unbearable amount of itching. Residents hardly ever leave the facility and unfortunately most family do not visit enough, so these issues are most likely coming from the worker(s). They do not clean and or deep clean this building nearly enough- there's a very distinct smell. Many patients are not receiving the minimum level of care that they are paying for and the food is disgusting, small portions too. Every resident at Charter pays for a certain level of care. For example if they are at a level two, a caretaker may help them take a shower. This can be costly and sometimes the residents are not even receiving the level of care that they are paying for. The meals are poor quality even for an institutionalized place.

We had a very nice tour with Charter Senior Living. The marketing director who took us around was very knowledgeable and also compassionate with what we were going through as a family. She knew all the residents by name and knew things about them, so we could tell that she was very engaged. The facility was also in a great location for our family and pretty much met all of our standards. We were going to go with them, but unfortunately my mom declined to a point where they were not going to be able to care for her needs.

However the location was just not convenient for us, due to our loved ones health state we wanted to be very close by and this was just to far.
I would recommend that anyone looking into this facility gets an independent assessment before deciding on a residency decision. They have some questionable nursing staff and I would not recommend to others at this point.

Overall, it's very good. We like the people. They have a good attitude and mean well. They try hard. The care plan is good and they have outstanding people, but they've been a little inconsistent at times, although nothing major. Things like they don't make the bed every day, and they've have some staff turnover. So I would say their overall supervision or training is a little lacking.

July 16, 2021Thank you for sharing your impressions of our community. We're glad to see you think of the team as outstanding and are happy with the care plan for your loved one. The virtual tour scheduled for [date removed] had to be scheduled to an in-person visit on [date removed]. A very good visit. [name removed] was warm and welcoming and provided lots of useful information about the facilities, services, and activities available at Heartfields. We were able to see several different room layouts and some of the common areas. The layout of the building is nice and seems conducive to residents interacting regularly. The location of Heartfields is nice, surrounded by trees and near I-95 and downtown Fredericksburg and Central Park shopping. This looks like an ideal place for my Dad.

Response from Charter Senior Living of Fredericksburg
March 11, 2021Thanks for the feedback on your recent tour. We're glad to hear it went well and that we were able to show you all the HeartFields has to offer. It was wonderful to read your thoughts on the apartments, the programs and the location. Please let us know if we can answer any more questions for you, and we hope to see your dad (and you) again in the near future!
The staff was great here. From the top down, from the administrative staff to the care giving staff, everything was always positive. They were always warm and caring. When we would visit our mother, she was always nice and clean and smelled good and worked with her very carefully with her appetite and found things she liked eating. There were always people cleaning and organizing, even her room and bathroom especially. The meals were always good. On the non-memory care side, each room has their own courtyard so that they can go outside. They were always paying very close attention to the residents and making them comfortable. Even when there were no families there, the staff would visit with the residents and engage with them. The community itself is very relaxed and comfortable. Anytime we had questions about our mother's care or medications, they would talk with us on the spot and find us answers. They were very clear about all her care from day one. The hospice team here was amazing as well. I would recommend HeartFields for anybody looking for their loved one. Even from the very beginning, the assured us that they would never kick her out because of her financial situation.

Nursing Med Staff and CNA's do not put in place procedures to adequately provide consistent care. Following through on In-House Doctors orders for new medications or tests is constantly overlooked. Nursing aide assistance is inadequate which includes coming within a reasonable amount of time when a residents pushes their help call button. (I was told within 15 minutes sometimes we have waited for an hour).Giving my mom her twice a week showers is a hit or miss. I'm not notified if my Mom's medications run out and if I am its after they have run out (I discover for myself she's not getting them) I visit my Mom almost everyday so I have first hand knowledge of the inconsistent care my Mom has received. It all depends on what nurses and CNA's are on the floor because some do their jobs professionally others don't. Directors have been informed of these shortcoming but nothing improves. The Dining Room Food preparation and selection needs improvement. I feel as if I have to visit my Mom everyday just to make sure she is properly cared for as I was promised she would be. Our family now takes her home each Friday,Saturday & Sunday just so we can make sure she's not [Removed].For those residents that don't have loved ones visiting I'm concerned about who is their advocate. My Mom has been a resident for over 3 months. Also we are still waiting on the wheel chair that was ordered the 3rd week of January.

My In-laws seem very happy here. The meals seem to be good for them. They provide housekeeping for their room and the facility is kept clean. My parents seem to enjoy the activities and outings they have. The staff seem more caring and involved with residents. They are less expensive and have more of a home environment. Their room has great layout, in the shape of an "L".

I am happy with the level of care my dad gets here. He is doing okay too. The community is kept clean for all the residents. My dad is eating well, from what the community makes. There is plenty of activities and my dad has tried a few of them. I would recommend this community.

So far everything is going very well for my mother at this community. She seems to have adjusted well and I am pleased. The community looks great and everything looks nice and clean. I really enjoy the staff they have been very helpful and welcoming. She has tried some new activities. The activities are really geared to simulate the brain. The food is very good, they do sever a nice well balanced meal. They are doing the best they can to care for my mother. I would recommend it.

Overall I think things have gone very well with HeartFields Assisted Living! They really put a lot of effort into making the transition easy for my loved one, and everyone here is very friendly and professional! The facility itself is well kept and clean, and she even really seems to like the food! My only complaint so far is that I wish they would keep me a bit more in the loop when it comes to her day to day activities.

A Place for Mom has scored Charter Senior Living of Fredericksburg 5.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
