Bickford is a warm and welcoming facility. The building and grounds are very nice and the staff members are very friendly and accommodating. Nothing is 100% but, overall, I am very pleased with the care provided and it is comforting to know that there is someone available 24 hours a day to assist when needed. We toured a couple other facilities before choosing Bickford. Bickford was far superior to the others for around the same price.... Read more

We were thrilled when we found Bickford, which presented itself as a caring, family-like environment, for my sister-in-law when it became apparent she could no longer live alone. She had a history of falls and had developed early dementia. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing in the areas of patient care, cleanliness, and billing practices. The marketing person and others were very friendly, but did not follow through on promises made regarding room readiness and start of therapy. We used the medical provider at the facility, and our loved one was started on several medications without our knowledge or consent. Sadly, after seven weeks (mid-Aug) she suffered a bad fall with serious head injury, resulting in hospitalization at a trauma center. We were informed she needed to be discharged to a facility that could provide a higher level of care. Bickford’s director agreed but administration refused reimbursement for unused Sept. days. Overall, a bad experience.

I'm going to vent here, hoping for change due to public exposure. Plus: food, activities. security. Minus: Communication with family, follow up on action promises, missed medical appointments. professionalism of some staff. Staffing appears inadequate.

Response from Bickford of Spotsylvania
December 5, 2022Wayne, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We regret that you had a negative experience and will use this as an opportunity to improve. We are always looking for ways to grow and we appreciate your input. If you are willing, we would like to speak with you to learn more about your experience. Please call 855-256-5200 and we look forward to speaking with you soon.
If you are able to take care of yourself fine, if you can't don't go here. They didn't clean my loved one like they should have. The staff communicated well; however, their follow through needs to be improved.

We chose Bickford of Spotsylvania because of the location for family and we really liked the layout of the building. The room size is just right for what she needs. She raves about the food, they are chef prepared meals. They are starting to ramp up on the activities that were stopped due to covid, they just had an outing last week. I would absolutely recommend them to others looking.

We chose Bickford of Spotsylvania because it was far and above others that we looked into, it is almost brand new and it is a beautiful place. The room sizes are standard compared to everywhere else that we looked. It really feels like a home here and I would recommend to others looking.

The community is a good place. They have had a few challenges with COVID, due to the lock down. We are able to visit in person now, and only recently. The visits are limited to porch visits or in a room and it is by appointment only. The time is limited to 30 minutes with our loved one. There is a newsletter posted on their website. They have COVID case numbers on their website.

I was very hopeful that this was the place for my husband. I started the convo off w/ saying he had medicare & aid. They wasted 2 weeks of my time. Did virtual tour, had nurse access him. They assured me of it would all be fine. THEN they sent me to their financial people (ELDER). Since we had nothing to give up for his stay, now they claim they dont take our insurance. WRONG WAY TO DO BUSINESS. SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME FROM THE START.

Bickford was a beautiful community. [Name removed] took a great deal of time to understand the situation with my mother. I have nothing but high praise for Bickford. They will be one of the finalists in my decision making process.

Bickford of Spotsylvania is an unfit facility. My wife was there for just over a month. The entire time she was there, the director, [name removed], never once returned a phone call. Even when another employee sent her a text message with my name and number asking her to call me, she did not. I would go in to find my wife standing by a door, crying and upset, setting off the alarm, and nobody paid any attention to her. That happened more than once. In the time she was there, only once did they come to take her to an activity and that was after I complained. When a group went out for the day, and my wife did not go, she was left behind with no activities, no activity personnel to engage my wife in any way. At least once, my wife did not get a shower or change of clothes for an entire week, and then only when I did it. My wife has dementia. She taken in under assisted living at care level 2. That was my thought, and they agreed she should be a good fit in the assisted living side as apposed to the memory care unit. My main concern was that she be kept engaged. They assured me she would. I did not expect one on one care, but I expected her to be taken care of with some dignity. We were told by many, and this was the second facility she was in, that it could take 3-4 months for people to acclimate. After one month, they wanted to move her to the memory care unit. From $5,300 to $6,800. One reason cited was that she has not acclimated. ONE MONTH. They said she would be kept engaged in the memory care unit, but that’s what they said about assisted living. I believe they would have told me anything I wanted to hear just to get her in. It was clear to me that it was bait and switch. If they felt she needed memory care and not assisted living, they should have said so, and only been willing to take her in under memory care. They did not want to take the chance of loosing a potential customer. The facility looks nice, but the care in my opinion is criminal. They to not live up to the required standards of care. It is my understanding that [name removed] is still there, and that just amazes me. Several staff members voiced concerns with me when they found out we were leaving, complaining about her. One told me that it was not the first time they had heard to same complaints from other people, and urged me to be specific when I contacted the main office to complain. It seems painfully obvious that the only thing they are concerned about is the money.

The staff at Bickford is wonderful. They all work together as a team & go out of their way to help you. My mother just passed away there. We brought in hospice & the Bickford staff worked well with them. I am so impressed with Bickford. I have decided to volunteer there a few hours a week. I thank God for Bickford every day.

Our experience at Bickford of Spotsylvania was terrible. First of all, my wife was accepted into assisted living for memory care at care level 2. After just over one month, with no change in care level, they tried to move us over to the memory care unit. More importantly, my wife was not properly cared for. With exception of a few times, I visited my wife at least every other day, sometimes two or three days in a row. Not once did I arrive and find my wife engaged in an activity. I told them that if even I was there, don't stop from getting her involved in activities. Only once did someone come to take her to an activity while I was there. That did change after they tried to move her, and I decided to take her to a different facility. I visited my wife on Sunday, January 27th. I visited her again on Tuesday the 29th to find her in the same clothes. No Shower. I changed her clothes. I came back Wednesday and Friday to find her in the same clothes, with no shower. Purely neglect. More than once we found my wife at one of the doors setting off the alarm, upset, confused, and crying. No one was paying any attention. During the entire time my wife was at Bickford, the director of that facility never once returned a call from a voicemail message, or a message left with someone else. In one instance, another employee sent her a text with my name and number letting her know I had a question and to call me. She still did not call me. From the stand point of care, I feel their lack of care rose to the level of abuse.

My father was only at Bickford for 16 days before he died. I have waited to submit a review because I was too angry and emotional. I want to first say the floor staff that attended him were very good....the CNAs etc.....even though they were terribly understaffed. But the office and administrative staff over promised and under delivered. I did keep a journal of our experience and would be happy to share it. I would not recommend this facility.

The management was terrible. Moved mom after 7 months. Not enough staff or supervision to take care of residents. Room not cleaned regularly and lapses in daily medications because staff let subscriptions run out before reordering.

[Removed] was very informative of the facility. We loved the extra touch of the welcome sign with our names on it in the front lobby as we walked in. She was great with our father and answered all his questions. The facility was beautiful despite the clean up from the water pipe break from last week. It's on the plus list of our search for a place for dad.

I toured here when looking for a place for my dad and this place was very, very nice. It was mainly occupied by females at the time, though there were a few gentlemen around. There seemed to be activities for everyone and they had a restaurant style dining area. The facility looked very, very clean and it’s only been around for about a year so everything is pretty updated. When I first walked in, the first thing that I noticed was that it was an open floor plan, so it was like walking into someone’s home or their living room. The rooms were nice and even had kitchenettes. My dad would be here if it had been a bit more affordable

My mother is doing well with her move into this community. She really likes it here, and I'am pleased with everything they have done for us. The staff is great, and I'am satisfied with the care she in being provided with. The community is well-kept, they do a good job with the cleanliness around the facility. There are good activities offered. and nice meals provided. I would recommend this community to my friends, and all is working out great for my mother in this community.

Loved the facility. The person scheduled to give our tour was not there, but was still given a great tour (only drawback was our tour guide was not able to answer a couple of questions.) I intend to follow-up to have questions answered.

The staff at this brand new community are bending over backwards for the residents. My loved one likes the food, however she does think the portions are a little small. They are just starting with the activities and outings. The residents are currently helping to decorate the community. The community is clean. One of the reasons we chose this community is it is close to a hospital. I would recommend this community.
