Response from Berman Commons
September 19, 2024Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Our team works tirelessly to make sure our residents have the best possible experience in our community.
My mother in law has been at Berman for over 4 years. The early adjustment wasn't easy, then a fall while visiting family swiftly followed by Covid kept things in a state of flux for her. She began at Berman with nearly full mobility and now is quite frail but mentally and socially vibrant. Her care has been adjusted as needed, her extensive medication regime is attended to, her social life is as full as she can manage. She has good friends that she enjoys. And an accessible apartment that is as much space as she really needs, decorated with her things to feel like home. She loves the staff and they are attentive. We do add another layer of outside caregivers for a few hours on weekends just for our own peace of mind, knowing weekends can be a time when sudden staff shortages in any facility can happen, or when staff who don't know her as well will be working. Overall very positive. We live close by and able to see what is happening at Berman and feel comfortable with her there.

My mother is in memory care at Berman Commons. I do not think it is the ideal place. They are short staffed and there is rapid turnover. I had hoped things would improve with the new executive staff. I am supposed to have FaceTime with my mom once a week and they have gone weeks without calling. I brought this to the attention of the new director and the problem has not improved. I live 500 miles away. I would NOT recommend that you put your loved one in memory care here.

Response from Berman Commons
March 13, 2023Our sincere apologies for your experience with trying to connect with your mom from 500 miles away. I know the Berman Commons team has already been in touch with your family. We understand your frustration when you can’t be on site to see your mom (or our staff) on a regular basis. However, your statement about our staffing is categorically incorrect. Berman Commons staff retention is at an all-time high. The staff to resident ratio is better than state regulations and nearly all our competitors. And, our Executive Director has created a very positive culture that makes staff, residents and families feel welcome. Missed calls are not a result of short staffing, but of residents and staff participating in social activities and not breaking away in time. We will make every effort to do better in this regard.
My mother moved into The Berman Commons in [date removed] of 2020. It was a good experience but I was frustrated with a cascade of changes in staffing for the next year plus. Since then it has been as close to perfect as I could hope for! The staff from [name removed] (CEO), to [name removed] (D. of Nursing) to floor staff, admin and maintenance have been AMAZING! Their basic care was (of course) exemplary but it's all the extra things that really put my (and my mother's) experience over the top. From general flexibility to obvious and actual personal empathy, mother's level of care is everything I could ask for. The staff is not only professional but clearly take personal stake in the residences' well being and the extended families' comfort level. Transparency and heartfelt sentiment color all aspects of my experience with The Berman. I am so thankful that my mother is in such a great place! I extent a HUGE thank you to all the staff for their amazing level care and responsible custodianship!

There is very high turnover at Berman Commons. They are very lax with their Covid protocol.

My brother and I needed to get my mother into Assisted Living in a very expedited manor. [name removed] was amazingly helpful...transparent...flexible...hard-working in making this happen and making sure she got in and got settled! The Berman was the right place and [name removed] was the right person at the right time! I will forever be grateful for his help and for the piece of mind EVERYONE at The Berman Commons gives me and my family!

Response from Berman Commons
March 13, 2023Thank you for your kind words about the Berman Commons staff. We are so grateful you took the time to give your feedback.
Before COVID the residents would take field trips, and shopping trips. They would have movie nights, and karaoke nights. They even had entertainment groups come in to perform, they would also have cook outs. The food at Berman could use some improvements, they currently aren't eating in the dining room, and the residents have a smaller selection to choose from due to COVID. This community is very clean, the lobby area is very spacious, and well done. The rooms are large and good size.

Beautiful but don't be misled. My dad was in memory care for about 6 months this past year. During his time there the director, both sales people and the two directors of memory care all left. My dad left for the hospital for a month and I was unsure if he would be allowed to move back until the day he was discharged. They didn't let me know they had fired the memory care directors. I would never take someone I loved to the Berman Commons again. I am Jewish but my dad spent his last 6 months of life in an Episcopal memory care. The facilities were nowhere near as nice, but the care he received was far superior.

Mom is doing pretty good here. It's a big adjustment for her but she is slowly settling in. She is starting to do some of the activities that are offered and she is starting to make friends. The staff is friendly and interacts with the residents. The community only serves kosher food which my mom is not a huge fan of. The community is always clean and well maintained. I would recommend it.

September 26, 2017Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion! Moving to a new community is always a big adjustment, so we are glad she is starting to feel at home. FYI, Chef loves trying our residents own recipes. I hope you consider submitting some of her favorites.

A Place for Mom has scored Berman Commons 8.2 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
