One reason we chose American House Westland was that lower entrance fee. Also their rent was a little bit lower. I have to clean certain things myself. I won't recommend it especially if the person wasn't totally independent it. The food is not always good and they can't keep good help. The people there are friendly but the facility needs to have some improvements.

Response from American House Westland Venoy Senior Living
November 12, 2024Thank you for taking time to write your review. We highly encourage you to reach out to the Executive Director to go over your concerns and work towards satisfaction of the issues. Our standard housekeeping schedule is a thorough cleaning once per week with bed making and trash being handled daily. We do find that our residents with memory care issues do need more daily support and services and do offer memory care at our community. Feel free to discuss with the Executive Director. Additionally for meals, we do offer daily choices and encourage you to meet with the Chef to customize your loved one’s meals based on their preferences. We strive daily to create and warm and comfortable environment for our residents. We are more than happy to meet and make adjustments where possible.

American House tries to work with families to be as accommodating as possible...They provide a variety of activities and special events throughout the year. They had just hired a new nutritionist/chef...prior to that the food was rather pedestrian...

June 1, 2024Thank you for your review. We are excited to bring a new Chef on board to Westland Venoy and hope that our residents enjoy the homecooked meals and new Spring and Summer Options menu. We strive to accommodate our residents and work diligently and daily to create JOY at our community.
The people working day to day with memory care patients are not properly supervised or trained. Not all but most There were so many items that were lost or ruined in the laundry. I would not take my dog to this place.

March 20, 2024Thank you for taking the time to review Westland Venoy and thank you for the kind words about our community! We strive to have full satisfaction in all areas of our community. We request that you please reach out to us to discuss food and preferences. We have an additional Options menu, and we would like the opportunity to offer meals that your loved one would enjoy. We can meet with the Chef and create a menu that would be better suited to the likes and needs of your family member.
The move in was easy, of course. But they have to get you in as a bare minimum before they can not do what they promised as well as they promised to do it. They do not seem to deal with incontinence very well. They don't want to wash more than one trash bag of laundry a week but still complain about the amount of laundry being too much. They never stated there was a laundry limit or that incontinence was a special care need that they don't accommodate. Housekeeping isn't on top of keeping the floor clean either. If you know the resident pees on the floor in the bathroom, it should be checked daily and cleaned. They do not. A family member does it themselves. In addition to laundry they say is too much. They took then returned the only bag they took stating it was too much. Someone there got hold of the new debit card just received for the resident and made a month of Amazon purchases. We know it happened there because the card wasn't used anywhere else and was set up only for the facility to bill to. They do not communicate with the family unless put on the spot. They were not helpful with communicating with the pharmacy/doctor to fix several issues with how the scripts were written and filled. I would not recommend for any high needs resident. Not good with Parkinson's patients who fall a lot and are incontinent. The facility should have laid out, in a clear resident care plan, what they do not do and expect family to do. Too much money being paid for the amount of work still being done by family.

January 25, 2024Thank you for sharing your review and expressing your concerns. We would like to set up meeting with the management team for the third party home medical care as your main concern seems to be incontinence. We would very much appreciate the opportunity to have you meet with them and work on an appropriate plan going forward. As you have already met with the Executive Director about your concerns, we invite you to continue to keep the lines of communication open and meet with the Director about any new concerns if they arise. In regard to the debit card, we ask you to reach out to the Executive Director. We have a security team that can look into this and do a full investigation. Please know we appreciate you placing your family member at Westland and take your concerns very seriously and will work to achieve satisfaction for our residents and family members.
I would recommend American House. They have changed health care and it's better now, but they take a really long time to respond when the button is pushed. The food is very good. The office is very helpful.

January 9, 2024Thank you for taking time to write this review. We strive to provide warm and compassionate care to our residents. We have recently introduced a new third-party home care company and will work with them continuously to shorten response times for residents who push their pendants. We are so very happy that your loved one enjoys the food. Please feel free to reach out to the Executive Director if you have any concerns or would like to recommend any improvements. Happy New Year! We are planning to make it a GREAT one at Westland Venoy.
My Mom was a resident in the memory care unit, which was staffed by an outside agency called "The Medical Team." They were not properly trained, & most of the staff were lazy & did as LITTLE as possible. A member of our family was at the facility every day, and yet my mother still suffered multiple injuries, including a catastrophic hip fracture while she was in hospice care, which accelerated her death significantly. The caregivers were not trained to provide hospice care, or to dispense medications after only 3 days training & no medical credentials, but that's how The Medical Team was run. The memory care unit is NOT a safe environment for the residents! It is my understanding that the Medical team has been removed from this American House facility.

November 20, 2023Thank you for the recommendation and the 5 star review!
We picked this community because, they accepted the Medicaid waiver and its location to family.American House Westland Venoy is a nice residential property. It's clean and offers activities for its residents. There is a steady turnover in staffing.

August 11, 2023Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for the lovely compliment of our community being clean and friendly. We strive daily to create a warm and inviting environment for our beloved residents. We appreciate you noticing those efforts! While it has been a challenge with staffing at times, we are pleased that the staff we currently have are committed to our residents and to making the residents feel valued and their daily experiences the best they can be. Everything is pretty good, except for the meals. I would recommend this place though. It was cheaper than the other places. I would say, I have made a lot of good friends here. The heat, water, electricity I have never had a problem with. You can have one small pet here. The meals are small and not that great. The staff is nice though.

June 8, 2023Thank you for your review. I'm so happy to hear that you have have made friends and have good people to surround you here! We are working on improvements to the menu. You should be noticing some changes in the near future.
The reason I didn't give 5's is because 5's would imply perfection. There isn't anything specific they need to improve, but the place isn't perfect. They are willing to work with you to make your family member feel at home.

May 17, 2023Thank you for taking time to write this review. We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment to our residents. Our daily goal is to create as many moments of joy as possible every single day. We want every resident to know we appreciate them joining our community and family.
Our family had an in person tour with American House Westland and from everything we saw it seemed fine, but the community is a little to small for us and the location is a little farther away. Their activities director had recently left, but when we were on the tour there was a gentlemen there that gathered the residents into a room to sing and play the guitar which was nice to see. The community itself is also nice and neat.

It's in a bad location, and a scary neighborhood. The tour experience was good. There are two buildings. The building without the cafeteria was newer, and better.

Our family had an horrifying experience with American House and we would never recommend this community to other families. Our loved ones room was rarely cleaned and had a very strong smell of urine in it. They rarely fed our loved one or helped our loved one eat. They were attentive whatsoever and just ignored our loved one in every area. We could not trust this place at all.

We didn't make it past the front door due to the horrible smell.
So far the experience has been good. My mom is not very happy, but she said that they are very nice. She just wants to go home. I wish I could afford to have her a companion that could be with her at least at night.

the front desk staff at American House are very friendly, but there is a serious problem with the aides who work here. there were many many many times when my aunt was not taken care of in the morning. the lack of morning care would go on for hours and my aunt would end up sitting in her own waste by the end of the day. we noticed that this was also the case with other residents. there's a woman who works with either the pharmacy or as a med tech by the name of [name removed]. something was not right with her. she or they were always "running out" of my aunts pain medication, but no other medication she had was ever short. I'm not making any accusations, just saying that it was odd... my aunt had an emergency pendant necklace that she would press if she needed assistance with going to the bathroom or help with getting up and about. the response time was 15-30mins, but when they came to help they would turn it off upon leaving. so often times my aunt had to turn it back on and she may not have known it was off in other moments. simple things that we thought would be taken care of with patience and love here weren't, and it was just very frustrating. the food was okay and the room was nice. the bathroom did not have what I would consider to be a handicapped shower. it was regular sized with a shower curtain - that she had to provide by the way. the shower could barely fit a shower chair, let alone a walker. in the entire time she was there, she was never able to take a shower in her bathroom because it wasn't accommodating. from what we could tell, it looked like they were updating the bathrooms. they may be out of code and are now trying to fix it, I'm not sure. they would have meetings where they addressed our concerns, or when things went wrong they would apologize and say "it won't happen again". it seems as if almost no action ever came from the resolutions they provided us. [name removed] the med tech/pharmacy liaison would say to us "its your aunt, not our people". this was inappropriate to say because my aunt had 100% of her mental capacity, she was only there for her physical needs. my aunt was not forgetful and shouldn't have been blamed for the shortcomings of others. overall I would advise others to not judge this place by its cover; it looks great on the outside, but not so much on the inside. there are some situations going on here that should be looked into.

We toured American House and thought it was a 3.5. We chose another community because American House had more of a nursing home feel.
We have people in here that should not be here. Most of the time they don't know where they are. I am tired of babysitting . We have no one to help us after 7 or 5.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
