Assisted living communities offer personal care, supervision, and social interaction to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often include help with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer nursing, respite, or dementia care. The state of Tennessee maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, residents may self-administer medication, and assistance with reading labels. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, laundry services, responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, and personal services such as protective care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, physical assessment, and recreational and social activities. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: health care management, applicable state rules and regulations, food service, and nutrition.
