Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid to seniors who may need a helping hand with everyday activities such as showering or cooking meals. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, opportunities for organized activity, and help with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, continuing care, or skilled nursing care. The state of Tennessee maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, part-time intermittent nursing care, responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, and medication administration. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, residents may self-administer medication, and observing the resident while taking medication. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: emergency procedures, applicable state rules and regulations, nutrition, and food service. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with health services, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, physical assessment, and recreational and social activities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals.
