How do we rank Virginia Beach senior apartments?
Our goal is to help you find high-quality apartments that fit your needs. Using our 20+ years of experience in senior living, we developed a proprietary rating system based on the following:

  • Recent, high-quality reviews. We take into account reviews from the past two years. Then, we look for the apartments people prefer. Senior apartments that have mostly positive ratings in the past two years are prioritized over facilities that have low or no reviews in the past two years. Reviews also help us understand what matters most to families like yours, such as how pet-friendly and clean the apartments are.
  • Facility transparency. Apartments that have robust information are prioritized over those that don’t offer the same level of transparency.
  • Location. Options vary based on proximity to your desired location.

Overall everything is pretty good. Occasionally they are short staffed and it takes a long time to get meals dispersed for meds. But everybody seems to try to make it feel lively and fun. There's always activities. It's definitely better than some other facilities I had seen in the area. If they had more full-time staff I would give it a five out of five

Everyone from the person that does the yard to the managers are jsut so nice and helpful. I like it here very much, it's really nice to tell you the truth, I feel like I live in a hotel because you don't see any trays in the hall. The people are nice, I like the activiites, we have a calendar of all of them and we have lots of activities here. The ones that I've gone to I've thoroughly enjoyed, I'm making some friends and they bring in speakers (like "Understanding medicare") and they're very informative. They have a computer room, they have 2 or 3 libraries, they had a wine tasting, when I first moved in here they had a 70's party, there's so many things to do! I got this apartment and I'm glad I have it, I'm making friends, there's a variety of people in here and I have no complaints. If I could complain about something, and it's not really a complaint, but they need a change machine in the laundry room.

Costs of senior apartments in the Virginia Beach area

The average monthly cost for a senior apartment in Virginia Beach is around $1,489.[01] This is slightly higher than both Virginia’s statewide average, which is $1,300, and the nationwide average, which is $1,141.[02] The cost depends on the size of the apartment, number of bedrooms, the location, and the amenities.

Note that Virginia doesn’t tax Social Security benefits. If you have Social Security benefits taxed at the federal level, you may subtract that from your Virginia return.[03] Additionally, as of July 1st, 2007, Virginia no longer has an inheritance tax. Visit the Virginia Estate and Inheritance Taxes section of the Public Document 15-93 for more information.[04]

Virginia does, however, require you to file an income tax return if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You’re a resident, have been a resident within the past year, or a nonresident
  • You’re required to file a federal income tax return
  • You’re single or married filing separately and have an adjusted gross income equal to or greater than $11,950.
  • You’re married filing jointly and have an adjusted gross income equal to or greater than $23,900.[05]

The following costs represent average baseline area costs, not including any additional fees.

Understand Virginia laws and regulations for senior apartments communities

Senior apartments follow the same safety laws and regulations as all other apartments.

Senior apartments must pass safety inspections

Virginia Beach requires rental properties to pass inspections to prove their living conditions are safe and sanitary.  The following are a few key things to know about Virginia Beach’s renal property inspections:

  • For a property to pass the inspection, they must have no violations. Violations can range from holes or deterioration in doors to faulty electrical outlets to a leaky refrigerator. To see a full outline of all the areas that must pass inspection, view the Virginia Beach Code Enforcement Inspection Manual.
  • Properties that pass inspection are given a Certificate of Compliance, which allows the property to be exempt from inspections for the next four years.
  • If you’re searching for a list of violations at a specific address, you won’t be able to find it online. Instead, you’ll have to contact the Housing and Neighborhood Preservation’s Code Enforcement Division at 757-385-4421.

Senior apartments cannot discriminate against certain seniors

Under The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), senior apartments in Virginia Beach are forbidden to discriminate against individuals with a disability. The Act defines a disability as “a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual.” The Act also states that seniors with disabilities may request modifications be made to their home and certain public areas in order to make it more accessible and livable. To read the city’s policy on their adherence to ADA provisions, you can view the Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Disability Administrative Directive.

Senior apartments must also adhere to The Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to home renters and buyers from discrimination based on race, sex, religion, familial status, and disability. Under the Housing for Older Persons Act, certain types of senior housing are exempt from discrimination claims based on familial status. Communities that meet the exemption criteria may refuse to sell or rent dwellings to families with minor children. Exemptions apply to the following types of housing:

  • Any state or federal program determined by the Secretary of HUD to be specifically designed and operated to assist older adults (as defined in the state or federal program)
  • Intended for and occupied solely by people aged 62 and up
  • Intended and operated for occupancy by people aged 55 and up

Residents in Virginia can even go through their VA Tenant and Renter Resources guide. This includes tenant resources for Virginians, statements of tenants’ rights and responsibilities, a landlord tenant handbook, and more.

COVID-19 regulations for Virginia Beach senior apartments communities

Senior apartments aren’t required to follow any current rules for COVID-19, and any prevention methods will vary from facility to facility. For current COVID-19 CDC recommendations, you can read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s general COVID-19 guidelines.

Everyone in Virginia older than six months is eligible for both the Pfizer and the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine booster shots. Visit the Virginia Department of Health’s COVID-19 Vaccination Response for updated vaccination recommendations.
