Last Updated: 2/21/25

Venice, Florida, isn’t just a destination for snowbirds. It’s also a haven for retirees due in no small part to its location. Not only does the area have some of the best beaches (and seafood), but it’s conveniently located about 19 miles from Sarasota and about 70 miles from Tampa.

A number of senior apartment complexes can be found in Venice. Many offer a host of amenities, activities, and services that will make you feel at home — or like you’re living at a luxury resort. Depending on the community you choose, you can enjoy an on-site swimming pool, billiards room, game room, fitness center, library, and more. And this doesn’t even account for all the nearby activities.

However, moving to a senior apartment community can be tough. To help you or your family arrive at a decision, A Place for Mom has put together this guide on senior apartment communities in the Venice area. Brookdale Rotonda in Rotonda West, FL
5.0

Walking into Brookdale Rotonda is like coming home to family. Everyone greets you and makes you feel welcome. My sister in law's mother now lives there and has asked why we didn't do this sooner. She has made many friends and loves the staff. They take very good care of her and treat her like a queen.

The community is very well kept, the cleanliness is great. With the covid pandemic our loved one has opted out of going to the dining room and cooking for himself, but with the meals he has taken from the dining room have been excellent. He also opted out of the activities for now, so we don't have much experience with all they have to offer. The value for cost is excellent it is a wonderful place.

Brookdale Port Charlotte
5.0

Brookdale is a great place for mom. The food is very tasty and has multiple choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are activities almost every day for the occupants to do and the staff is very friendly. There is a great outdoor area in the middle of the facility with both screened in area and sun exposed garden with seating in both sections. The staff is also very caring about the well-being of all the occupants. Any changes with the occupants the family is notified and if corrective medication is needed there are doctors that frequently will help the nursing staff make the changes to ensure the best quality of life.

How people pay for senior apartments in Venice

Senior apartments are a bit different from other senior living options. They’re more akin to retirement communities than assisted living, which provides care services to residents who need help with daily activities. As such, you’ll likely need to rely on private resources to pay for a senior apartment. However, there are also other methods, including VA benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and public assistance.

Private pay methods

Most seniors will rely on private payment methods to fund their senior apartment stays. This includes retirement savings, Social Security benefits,  pensions, retirement account distributions, and investment-generated income. It could also include any of the following options:

Understand Florida laws and regulations for senior apartment communities

In Venice, senior apartment communities fall under the general housing category, so there aren’t many specialized laws or regulations they need to abide by. However, senior housing facilities must rent at least 80% of units to people who are 55 or older. They must also publish and adhere to policies and procedures that demonstrate the community is for older adults, as well as comply with the rules set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Senior apartments are also held to the standards set by the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Property owners or landlords cannot discriminate against you or offer less favorable terms and conditions if you belong to a protected class. Reasonable accommodations must also be made if you have a disability. For example, a property would need to provide a ramp into the building if one doesn’t already exist. Additional information is available on tenant laws through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website.

The Venice Building Department inspects work on any senior apartment building that requires a permit. Results of these building inspections can be found on this online portal.

COVID-19 regulations for Venice senior apartments communities

Florida has no specific COVID-19 regulations for senior apartment communities. However, some individual facilities may have guidelines in place to protect residents. It’s best to check with the senior apartment community you’re considering and adhere to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Vaccinations. Getting vaccinated is encouraged but not required.

Masking. People may choose to mask at any time.

Facility cleanliness. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces is recommended.

Staff safety. Ventilation improvements are encouraged to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

What to expect from senior apartments in Venice

Senior apartments in Venice offer seniors the opportunity to downsize to residences that require less upkeep and maintenance. This perk, combined with the subtropical climate, makes for a pleasant retirement. You’ll love exploring the city’s northern Italian architecture and sandy beaches. What’s more, the senior apartment complex you choose may offer even more services, amenities, and activities.

Room setup

Generally speaking, senior apartment communities in Venice offer the convenience of aging in place. In some apartments, this means an open floor plan, wider doorways, walk-in tubs, wheelchair-accessible showers, ramped entrances, and more. You can also choose residential units with a private patio, deck, or balcony. As a bonus, because senior apartments are considered general housing, you can live with your dog or cat at most apartment buildings.

Facility amenities

The properties often come with a variety of common areas. Some may just have a TV lounge, central fireplace, and outdoor patio. However, others may offer a more resort-style living experience. Some facilities have swimming pools, fitness centers, game rooms, and billiards lounges. You may also find communities that have an on-site library or arts and craft center.

Social opportunities

Senior apartment communities provide residents with opportunities to socialize. Many facilities offer athletic programs, such as yoga classes, stretching classes, water aerobics, or walking clubs. You may also be interested in some communities’ wellness classes, art classes, gardening clubs, bridge clubs, book clubs, or pinochle clubs. Wine tasting may also be on the itinerary at some apartment communities.

The Sarasota County Area Transportation (SCAT) does offer what’s known as SCATPlus, which is a curb-to-curb rideshare service for eligible individuals. The static routes available in the Venice area do come at a reduced cost to seniors: $1.25 for anyone between the ages of 65 and 79, and free for anyone who’s older.

Active seniors may be interested in Venice’s bike infrastructure. The city is quite bikeable. In fact, it’s been recognized as a Silver Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. You may want to check out the Legacy Trail, Venetian Waterway Park Trail, and Island Park Loop — all of which are popular among residents.
