Nursing homes, also called skilled nursing facilities, provide long-term care for seniors with significant physical or mental health conditions, and short-term care to people recovering from an injury or hospital stay. Nursing homes provide personal assistance and medical care from licensed professionals. Services in skilled nursing facilities often include:
A nursing home provides room and board to at least two persons who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. A nursing home community offers its inhabitants around-the-clock care by on-site nurses. These caregivers offer health related services for seniors who are unable to adequately care for their needs.
This type of community is a convenient and easy care alternative for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will usually admit persons 55 and older which is unusual for other senior care types. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include cosmetic and grooming items, specially prepared food, and flowers and plants. Nursing homes are required to provide dietary services, specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), a professionallly directed program of activities, and nursing and related services to residents. Many residents of nursing homes might have behavioral troubles. These can consist of a tendency to wander, resisting care, or verbal outbursts. The most frequent mental disease effecting nursing home residents is dementia, which can cloud their and familiarity, memory function, and decision making abilities. A significant portion of nursing home inhabitants are individuals who have a physical or mental disability, experience difficulty with hearing and seeing, have incontinence issues, or require assistance with daily tasks such as walking.
