Aviva Glendale Assisted Living in Toledo, OH

My mother really liked it here for the time she stayed which was about 4 months. But I don't think she realized she didn't need to be in an assisted living facility from that point on. It was great for her when she got out of the hospital but not necessary for her to continue living there. All the people were super nice and went above and beyond for her. I never really saw any cleanliness issues though it did smell of urine once in awhile. The staff was generally always very nice. Some more nice than others, once in a while there would be an aid that wasn't over accommodating but generally never any negative things about anyone. Quality of care was good for my mom but I heard many stories of other people not being cared for very well. Although I didn't see any of this in my own eyes I heard it quite often from my mom that her friends were not being cared for properly there. So I can only comment on what I heard from her. My mom was definitely one of their easier residents. Overall I think my mom enjoyed the food though there was times when she complained a little bit about it. But I'll be honest she complains about the food at the new place too. So there you go. My mom loved all the activities that they had at aviva. I think she would have been happy just doing anything. She just likes to keep busy and socialize. So she always enjoyed the activities they did. I think the value you get from staying there is worth the money. I priced out so many other places that seem to be comparable to Aviva and cost so much more. Now obviously we didn't get a chance to stay at any of those other places so I can only compare dollar value by place. It's definitely one of the cheaper places in town.

Balfour Ann Arbor
4.9

It is exceptional! Not a "value" place but exceptional care for the price! I like that my mom is content, more self sufficient in many ways, mentally more than anything. She feels respected and knows her preferences for the way things are done are listened to even if they can't always be accommodated 100%. Balfour is consistent in saying "This is your home. It is our job to learn who you are and how you like things done." Great philosophy and often works that way. They were willing to adapt the room to her needs. They hung the draperies from her home in her room! Adaptations to the bathroom were accepted. Food is exceptional, with a kitchen/chef/ and food staff in each living area...independent, assisted and memory care. She has a menu with a choice of really decent food for each meal. In other places, she supposedly had a choice, but there was never really a choice, food was prepared across the building and wheeled through the hallways on carts, etc.. Balfour's food service is designed like a restaurant. My mom does not participate in activities, nor does she take advantage of things like they're wonderful gym facilities… But they are there for those who are interested. They also have in-house PT which is also a plus!

Independent Living

Independent Living Communities provide seniors with a convenient balance between an independent lifestyle and not having to concern themselves with housekeeping. Food preparation, recreational activities andhousekeeping are taken care of while you are unencumbered to use your time as you wish. Along with their daily needs being met, residents can enjoy the opportunity to be among peers, surrounded by others of similar age groups and interests. Typically comprised of a private living area and a full kitchen, these communities offer homes with many of the amenities of apartment life but with none of the hassle. Guests can be invited over and entertained, and there will be more time to spend with them with the basic maintenance of daily chores out of the way. While policies vary between locations, a number of residences allow cats and dogs as well. If residents decide they would like to employ the services of independent medical providers, they always have the option. There are a variety of expenses and benefits to keep in mind while determining an independent living community. It is important to learn if these amenities are included in the care plan: laundry, initial assessment fee, transportation, move-in fee, cable TV, private phone, Waiting list deposit, and parking. The luxuries that pertain to independent living include game/TV room, fitness center & swimming pool, concierge services, golf course, community activities, beauty salon & barber shop, restaurant-style dining hall, and transportation.
