The Westland House is a horrible place and the owner only cared about the money he would make or lose. We gave notice by second week my loved one was there. You should not recommend this place to anyone. Some of the techs were nice and helpful

September 30, 2024I am very sorry to hear about your negative experience. We work hard to provide great care and customer service. I’d like to learn more about your experience if you’re willing to share with me in detail. Please call me directly 734-331-0073.
The facility is close, the administrator was extremely knowledgeable and helpful securing funds from various agencies to support the payments being made by residents! Very! The staff had quite different ideas as to what exactly their duties were when it came to actually assisting residents. When asked if the staff could provide the care needed for a person in my moms mental and physical state the answer was a very confident yes, the results fell short multiple times requiring several meetings to find out what could have or should have been done to prevent a lengthy hospital stay and several falls! My mother did not return to the facility after her visit to the hospital. I could not and would not recommend the facility for the care of a senior with needs similar to my mother's! Mild dementia and some weakness in her lower extremities. Residents were placed in their rooms behind closed doors left to fend for themselves overnight. My mother's first night the midnight staff has no idea she was there! NONE! Memory care was asked for specifically and we were told several times they could handle it, not true!!!!!!! After asking the administrator if a service could be provided she would say yes, her staff would openly rebut and say "We have to do all that?" They had no idea what was expected of them even after the admin said it would be done. Mind you we're all sitting there together! Spread the word, assisted living is for people who may need you to reach something from the top shelf, fetch an item from the garage or help grandma zip up and read her prescription bottle. This was about all they can handle!

I'm very satisfied with the assistant care of this facility. My mom is very comfortable with their services and staff. They have activities for the residents daily and shows so much lobe to the residents.

May 21, 2024Thank you for the kind review. We are happy to hear how pleased you are with the team at the Westland House. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.
Everyone is so friendly and helpful and answers all of our questions. The housekeeping is great. My mom says the food is awesome and she really likes it there. The move in process was good, it went well. The communication is great. I would definitely recommend The Westland House to others.

She is a pleasure and we appreciate having her as part of The Westland House Family. I hope you have a great holiday season. Thanks again for the feedback.
The all-inclusive pricing is outstanding. No surprises perfect for people on a fixed budget. Staff supportive and attentive they Treat residents with respect and are smiling. Very happy my mother is very happy. Owners listen and are open to making changes.

Response from The Westland House
December 26, 2023John, Thank you for the review. We appreciate your feedback. We are very happy mom is so happy!
We picked this facility for the affordable living and the fact that they take the medicaid MI waiver. The owners outright lied and told us at the monthly family meeting NOT to listen to the Medicaid waiver office telling us that they were cutting off funding to Westland House. A mere 3-4 days later we were notified in writing that the Westland House could no longer accept Medicaid waivers and we had to move our mom out on short notice. Scrambling to find another facility over a holiday weekend was a horrific experience. While living there the laundry was hardly ever done on time, items went missing, cleaning in the resident rooms was a joke, and the activities program (while the activities director was quite friendly and nice) was bare bones, repetitive, and lacking in much of anything. Like coloring on paper was an “activity”. I think they just had zero budget for activities.

I would NEVER recommend then to anyone. Our experience was horrible. We picked this community because I was told that they accepted Medicaid, would help with forms, none of that happened.

Response from The Westland House
November 12, 2023I am sorry your experience hasn’t been what you expected. The Westland house no longer accepts Medicaid waiver reimbursement. There are other benefits your loved one might qualify for. I am happy to review other options with you. If you are the loved one of a current resident, please ask for me Chris Schott next time you’re in the community. I will go over other potential options for financial benefits with you.
Zero star. Avoid. Repairs not done, limited menu with very few healthy choices, showers not given for weeks at a time. Meds not given, items missing from laundry and room. The staff would "borrow" things and never return them. They can't afford their own equipment? . The staff wasn't trained. Could not figure out how to use a shower chair. A catheter bag was installed backwards, so all the urine just backed up into the patient. Final straw was an aide tried to give 39 units of insulin instead of the correct 12 units. My wife, who is a nurse, caught the potentially fatal error. For her saving her mother's life, [name removed] and [name removed] had us banned from the property, fabricating a HIPAA violation against my wife. The actual violation was the aide leaving a medical record open in the hall and administering the wrong meds to the wrong patient. [name removed] reports cited multiple violations. [name removed]/[name removed] will deny any wrongdoings, but the reports are on the [removed] site for your reading pleasure.

Administrator responded quickly to problems but aides were never sure of their duties and would contradict administrator in front of families members. Residents would basically be on their own once the doors to individual rooms were closed. Staff did not communicate with coworkers on other shifts. Not assisted living. The amount of assistance was always in question from aide to aide. Families considering this facility should first understand what assisted living is and what it is not!! Administrator was very knowledgeable and knew her business but deserves a better staff.

July 25, 2023Thank you for the candid feedback. I would like to hear more specifics relating to your experience. Please email info@thewestland.org with your contact information. I am one of the owners, we are the only ones with access to that email, so your privacy is assured. I hope you will connect with me personally, and share more so we can look into your concerns in greater detail. Chris
We picked this community, because of the location and price. Be sure that the person being placed here is mostly self-sufficient and doesn't only needs limited medical care. Other issues were wrong laundry returned. Once papers were signed, [name removed] the director never returned calls or was available.

June 29, 2023Thank you for taking time out of your day to offer your feedback. I'm happy to know you and you're loved one are pleased with our staff and management team. Thanks again and enjoy the holiday weekend!
We picked this community because, they came highly recommended by your organization and we liked our tour and meeting with [name removed]. We like the fact that they are willing to keep my mother-in-law no matter her condition so that she doesn't to move ever again.

It's my only experience, and the staff certainly did what I could not, but my mother was not used to seeing people at all levels of care. She had come from an assisted living facility that required their residents to be ambulatory, with or without a walker. So when she saw people at the Westland House with varying levels of alterness, wheelchairs and she felt sorry for them snd got to where she did not want to leave her room. She was angry that staff didn't help them, like with eating, or when a resident had no teeth and that brought food they couldn't eat. [name removed] would tell me anything I wanted to hear. They were not giving my mother her medications, I called the state and the results of the investigation concurred with my complaint and The Westland House got a slap on the wrist. I don't know that more time making a decision about where to place mom would of helped, but I was given a little over a week to find someplace for her to live in my area in her budget. It is so very sad how seniors are treated.

Our friend has been living there for a couple of years now and it’s truly bedbound. The room is absolutely filthy. Every single time anyone comes to visit her as is she the bathroom has never even been cleaned in her room. You can never get a hold of anyone to help with the problems here
I adored [name removed] at Westland House - was not impressed with the other staff members and the senior community seemed way older than my loved one. She is only 77. Westland House was my 2nd choice but my loved one did not want elevators or stairs. Westland House did not have openings on the main level.

May 15, 2023Thank you for leaving a review. they removed the name of the person who you adored. Although I assume it was our wonderful administrator [name removed]. I'm sorry we didn't have any availability on the first floor, It is a popular floor and stays pretty full. We appreciate your feedback very much.
Don’t ever allow anyone to live here. The staff and management absolutely do not care. The community has so many write ups with the state of Michigan beware. Management lies about everything, no staff is watching your loved ones when you send them there

Response from The Westland House
April 26, 2023Thank you for the review. However, your review is very assumptive and your comments are generalities not facts. If you truly look at the state website you will see mostly all of the complaints were unsubstantiated after investigated by the state. Most were complaints from disgruntled employees or family members who exploited their parents, spending moms money on themselves instead of moms care and rent. Funny how they never call state or make complaints till we demand payment for the care and apartment they signed mom up for. We don't claim to be perfect, but many of these reviews are malicious attempts to retaliate by people who were held accountable to their job description or the contract they signed. For those of you trying to decide for yourself, I encourage you to look at several places and make an educated decision based on your personal experience.
Good sized studio rooms with kitchentte AND private bathroom. Not easy to find this type of set up. The Kitchenette is a nice touch and adds some independence. Large windows with lots of natural light and views of the forest. Watch deer, squirel, birds from your window. Emergency pull cords in room. Observations: Dining hall moves at a snails pace at times as they individual carry out meal plates to everyone. No choice in what meal u get, but its a menu with variety. My mom says they will make u a grilled cheese if u dont like the meal of the day. Pleasent atmosphere, and seems clean in there. Laundry: takes FOREVER. My moms clothes in April, took 2 weeks to get back and that was AFTER I asked what the hold up was. Other times, I will do her laundry myself and tape a note to dryer with her name and room number……I’ll come back days later and its just sitting in laundry room on the floor. They couldn't even return to her, just take it out and leave it in the laundry room!?

I would say if your parent needed more care, this may not be the place for you… If their parent was fairly self-sufficient, they would do "OK" there. I have to say that they did call if there was something wrong. But a lot of the things, that they said they would do were ignored on a lot of occasions. The administrative staff were very friendly, and told us a lot of what we wanted to hear, but I did not have a lot of faith that things were being done as they were supposed to be.

A Place for Mom has scored The Westland House 7.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
