A Place for Mom: My Senior Living Advisor, [name removed] helped me a lot. She asked what I was looking for and went from there. I looked at and spoke with 11 places in total. I so appreciate [name removed] and if you have more people like her, you guys are going to continue to be great. I'm gonna miss talking to her; but we've graduated and she's gotten my mom where she needs to go and has helped me settle down. What I appreciate about [name removed] is not only was she diligent about finding homes for us, but she gave me personal counseling too. She let me know that it is okay to have mom receive care elsewhere. We've cared for her for 4 and a half years and it was beyond what I could do. I felt guilty and she assured me that I would enjoy being a daughter again. I took that to heart and she let me know that I wouldn't be giving up on my mom, I just wouldn't be her caregiver. She was so personable, and I found her to be such a friend during such a hard time and while making these decisions. I was able to call her back and give her information on the places I toured. We laughed about things and discussed other communities together. I'd recommend this service to others. Anyone who asks me where to start, I'll send them your way. It was so much easier than looking up places and trying to find out about them on my own. We live in an elder community of condos and I've shared that A Place for Mom is a great resource because they will help you. The communities were great with calling and let me know that APFM had reached out to them on my behalf. Everyone was so kind, I didn't meet not one mean person; they were all sensitive to the fact that its a hard transition. They made sure to let me know that it was their mission to take care of the elderly. [name removed] is an angel and I know she gives that kind of care to all the people she helps. I appreciate her for being there during that time of my life and for helping me through that process. I can't say enough nice things about her. [name removed] really extended her self, anything I needed to know I could call her. She wanted to know what I thought about the tours I attended and she was very happy for us when things worked out with The Gilbert. This was a very pleasant process. Gilbert Residence: The Gilbert Residence was so accommodating to us. I felt that this was the right match. We were on a waiting list, but everything worked out and she was able to move in right from her Florida residence. It was an adjustment and it still is. They have a beautiful and amazing facility with only 30 residents in assisted living. When I first walked up, I thought the building looked like an old Catholic School. Although the outside of the building is very old, when you go inside it's very beautiful. They have beautiful wood floors and it looks very nice. They aren't very fancy or foo-foo, but it's nice. The rooms are very spacious we were able to bring almost all of her furniture, excluding the bed because it wasn't a twin. Some communities are over the top, but my mom didn't need velvet chairs, she needs care - which is what she gets here. The meals always have options, if you don't want either they can make you a sandwich or soup. Depending on how their tummy feels, that's a great option and it always feels homemade. As far as activities, they always have music. They've had several different people come in; a pianist, harpist, and clarinetist. They have a nondenominational church service on Sundays where they pray and sing hymns. They also offer sitter-cise (exercises sitting down), movies on Fridays in the theater room with popcorn, and arts & crafts with [name removed]. They make the cutest stuff and my mom has it hung up all around her room. For example: on Fourth of July they took pipe cleaners, bent them into different shapes, dipped them in glue & glitter, and put them on dark paper to make them look like fireworks in the sky. They've had them make floral arrangements in vases that they could take to their room. They've also had them cut fruits for their lunch before. I'm sure they had them using plastic or safety knives, but it was nice for them to be apart of cooking because I'm sure it spurs that interest. They have outings on their bus if a resident is able, they'll take them to get ice cream. My mom wasn't able to go that week, but I can still take her out to do things, so that's nice that she can leave if she wants. The community has picnic tables and nice benches outside to eat with your loved one. They have common areas and private rooms for family gatherings, so we don't have to always meet in her actual room. [name removed], the administrator is great. She let me know that they never over-patient their staff. They have empty rooms, but they don't want to fill every room just to make sure every person who comes there receives the same type of care. I appreciate that because that's what you want for your loved one. I say they're all hand patters, they let her know when its time to go to activities and so forth, they really take care of her. There's no community fee, but you do have to prove that you have 3 years of sustainability before moving in. They're not a big facility, and I like that as well. They have a memory care unit called Grace Hall, and they do some things together. One day she will go over there, but for now Gilbert seems like the perfect fit for her. It's all on one floor which is good for fire safety and memory. Another thing I love is that she can lock her door when she's in her room and they'll knock before entering, but they do have a key. She can't lock it when she leaves, but if she feels more secure with it locked while being inside, especially while sleeping, she can. That makes my mom comfortable because she feels safe in her own space. It's a great location, about 15 minutes from me, as I'm her main contact. She no longer has her phone, so if she gets panicky they allow her to call me. They also allow my sister, who lives in Indiana, to call once a week and that's such a gift. I just can't say enough good things about them and the care she receives there. It was a smooth transition, and they were very good with their psychology and helping us get our mom adjusted. I hope she can stay there for a good long time, so she can truly enjoy the rest of her life.

The workers have been very nice to our loved one especially the care givers. The food is fair, they have activities - not a lot of them but they are starting to add more. It is not a fancy place, it is smaller so there is only one dining room but it is decorated for every meal time. The location is convenient for us. It is a family ran facility so its not institutional. It is private pay only only and we would recommend the place.

We are really happy there. They have done a good job with the Covid-19. They are doing the best they can with the circumstances. The staff has been responsive. We have a unique situation with needing to bring the food for our loved one due to a special diet and they have been very accommodating.

A Place for Mom has scored The Gilbert Residence 8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
