Please dont put your loved one there. Rooms are filthy never cleaned. Facility mainly run by aides that sit on their phones . Residents get very little help . I spoke with several residents that are very unhappy and wish they never came there. Heat and air in room does not function properly. Executive director unfriendly to visitors . The only bright spot is susan in activities and a friendly hairdresser. They play cards and bingo . Have musician visit . If resident calls for help it takes 20 to 30 min and then are ask “what do you want”. A sad place for elderly .

May 15, 2019We are truly sorry that you’ve been left with such a negative perception of our community. Please know that we recognize the great responsibility of caring for the residents who choose to make Senior Commons ‘home.’ When mistakes are made, we are sorry and work to correct them ~ including monitoring call bell times. My wife [name removed] and I visited Senior Commons at Powder Mill last week. [Name removed] and [name removed] were fabulous. They answered all of our questions, provided all of the information we needed, and we could feel their passion for providing for their residents, bending over backwards when needed, and wanting to make the Powder Mill community "home" . They were so friendly and welcoming! The community was very clean, beautiful, and well maintained. Lounge areas were comfortable and inviting. All of the residents we met were friendly and welcoming. We had some nice conversations with them. All of the Associates we met were very friendly and professional. The housekeeping lady was very nice, friendly and cheerful as we engaged her in conversation. The Food Service Director and the dining associates we met were very nice, attentive, eager to please and their pride in their work was evident We had lunch and it was great! We met the Shuttle bus driver and he was very nice. The Club Room was a very nice space for activities. Their activities calendar and Dining menu were great. We were looking at Independent Living rooms. The 1BR and 2BR apartments were very nice, lots of room, open, well lit and nicely equipped. We came away very pleased with everything we saw.

We found ourselves in a tough situation. My sister was in need of respite care for a month or two or so we thought. We discovered that her medical needs were far more that we could handle at home. We turned to the staff at Senior Commons for help with additional care needs and how to implement it. [name removed], Resident Care Director, took the initiative to call and facilitate services that needed to be put in place taking the stress off of the family. She went above and beyond staying late into the night to help my sister. Our family feels blessed that my sister [name removed] is here. She is well taken care of with meals, safety, and medication management. We also found Susan in activities is always encouraging her to be part of the festivities and meet new people. I highly recommend trusting this community to care for your loved too.

don't like "money hungry attitude." I understand that this is a business, but I really felt like I was at a used car lot and all the "saleswoman" cared about was getting me to put down money without any time to consider other options.

Response from Senior Commons at Powder Mill
April 4, 2019We are so sorry. There are certainly times when families are in crisis or need to make a decision quickly; but we also recognize that other families want to research, tour and can take more time to reach a decision. It is our goal to be able to help in both situations. We'd love to have another opportunity to show you why Senior Commons would be a great choice for your loved one.
Mother has been a resident here over 1 year. Many issues with Meds. I review pharmacy orders and Mother's Medical Activity Report monthly and have found several discrepancies. Even with that, I have no assurance that the meds that are marked off as administered actually are. Doctor's orders for changes are either missed or ignored. I feel staff training is inadequate. Mother had an indwelling catheter after a stay in rehab. Twice within the week that she had it, I found it neatly taped in place, but with the tubing coming up out of the waistband of her slacks and the collection bag sitting on her lap. Often towels are removed from rooms and not replaced for hours. I have had to frequently complain about the cleanliness of her room. There has been a frequent turnover of administrators and staff. Staff was supposedly doubled last summer due to a requirement from the state because Senior Commons was operating on a Provisional License from the state. (Their license has recently been reinstated to full operating status). Adminsitrators have the same excuses for every issue brought to them - either they weren't there when that happened and they have a plan for change, or "we will reeducate staff." How many times is "reeducating" staff required to get them to comply?! During dayshift, residents are "encouraged" to go to a med room for administration of meds. If you are considering this community for a loved one, I HIGHLY recommend you spend a lot of time there, and keep your eyes wide open! Read the violations reported during state inspections- can be found on the PA DHS website and also in a notebook in the lobby of Sr Commons. Reviews from people who merely visit or tour the community, while well intentioned, do not paint an accurate picture. On a positive note, I have never heard any of the staff be unkind to the residents. Sadly, the once good reputation of Sr Commons has been soiled.

My brother-in-law was very reluctant to move. The tour process was incredible because it changed his mind. Once a resident, the staff was 100% helpful at every interaction with him and our entire family. Not a single team member left our presence without stopping and asking if there was anything else they can do for [name removed] or for us.

At first there was some concern about the way meds were handled but things seem to be working fine now. The center seems to be short handed. [Name removed] has to get up at 5am for the nurse to help put on his socks.

We toured the personal care area. The halls are very long with limited places to sit and relax. They break the community down in 4 "neighborhoods". The room we saw was adequate in size but the bathroom was very small and would not accommodate my mother's walker. The shower was an enclosed shower, again very small. The person conducting our tour was only at the facility for 3 months, spoke very quickly and did not include my mother in the conversation. She didn't show us much of the facility. They didn't have any current availability so I am sure this is a very nice place we just didn't get to experience this on this visit.

Have a wide range of activities to keep community members active. Sincere desire to keep members active & healthy. My mother has nursing care and they are very vigilent about her needs. Pleasant atmosphere. Would be a 5 star but food could improve a little. Thank you!

They invited my father to lunch. They went out of their way to find a resident with similar life experiences to eat and talk with him. They genuinely seemed to care about him. Older building but smaller, more intimate dining rooms on each wing. Whole facility all on one floor.

Lovely resident rooms. Family rooms for resident's visitors are beautiful and spacious. Excellent activities and various events for family and residents to participate in . Staff is courteous and friendly. Three meals daily, served in dining rooms close to residents rooms.

We toured this community for my mother. We would have moved into this community. The staff were professional and friendly. The building was clean and bright. There is a very nice outside area. Activities appeared to be varied and designed for each resident's needs. We especially liked that they offer physical therapy in-house. We would recommend anyone looking to take a tour at this facility as the quality and value seemed exceptional.

My parents live at Senior Commons since [Removed]. The dietary staff are vigilant to assure mom and dad eat well every day. The food is very good. Caregivers and nurses are kind, very attentive. They have embraced my parents as part of a big family. They assure all their needs all met quickly and keep me (daughter / POA) informed as needed via text and email. At my request, I would encourage anyone looking for senior care consider - Senior Commons of Powder Mill.

During my search for a good community for mom, I toured Senior Commons at Powder Mill. I had a good tour, the person that took me around was friendly and helpful. The place was clean and maintained well. It was a good experience to tour, but not the best fit for my mother.

Response from Senior Commons at Powder Mill
February 1, 2017Thank you so much for your comments and feedback. Your recommendation is the highest compliment we could receive! Of course, we hope that you and your mom will come back to visit every once in a while. And, as you know, we have both Independent and Personal Care apartments so if she misses the activities and the people, we’d love to have her back permanently!
My tour of the Senior Commons at Powder Mill went very well. The place was clean and the staff was all very friendly. It was a beautiful facility. The only thing I did not like was the area for Dementia patients. But other than that it was a nice place, it was a hard choice.
