I believe the top level staff has changed. That would be the only reason I'd think it may now be a viable place for anyone to reside.

Response from Rock Creek Senior Living
July 12, 2024We are so glad you are loving it! Thank you!
I would recommend this facility to others. All interactions that I have had with all of the staff have been great. Also, my mother has not had a complaint that she has told me about. So everything good. I can't rate the meals or activities as I haven't personally been involved with those.

The community was clean, employees welcoming and knowledgeable, restaurant open 7:00am-7:00pm (no set mealtimes allows flexibility), spacious rooms. [name removed] was caring and absolutely lovely. Medical staff on site is a plus. Absolutely a great value. So glad my mom is living there!

Response from Rock Creek Senior Living
November 14, 2023Thank you so much for your well-rounded review, Shawnna! We hope you have a great day!
I toured Rock Creek Senior Living when searching for an Assisted Living facility for my loved one. This facility was quite nice. It is a bit more updated than some of the other facilities that I toured. However, it is also more expensive. Ultimately, they didn't have availability when I toured, so I continued on with my search.
I think their heart is in the right place they were just understaffed, did not follow thru on their care promise on the weekend which we paid for, did not follow up on all the promises of getting mom out and about with others, did not take her to the dining room again due to staffing shortages. I found this very irritating because 1, I paid for this level of care and of they had told me they couldn't support this need I could have done it. In fairness we were only there 1 week. Mom got out of the hospital and due to care of her legs she got cellulitis. Mom was of sound mind, her and I both asked the NP to get her on Amoxicillin while they waited for the cultures which is the only way to keep her out of the hospital. they refused which led to her getting very ill and ending up in the hospital. Also because they were not doing any care on the weekend no one there realized she was sick until I came to visit her. they would bring her meals and take her last meal even though you could see she wasn't eating. had she been healthier or we had stayed longer I might have had a better experience. Bottom line, where ever you move your parents for assistance go check on them multiple times a day. The sales staff was great. the facilities and food were great. They appear to be committed. Before signing up check staffing, talk to other residents that need similar care or ask to talk to other families of those residents. Check on you loved one frequently. especially on weekends.

My grandmother gets wonderful care. She feels comfort from all the staff, stays physically active with the inhouse PT, stay socially active with all the events, and always feels comfortable voicing concerns with the ED.

Rock Creek was nice. We were very interested, but the location was not good for me, as it was too far.
Nice, friendly community. Everyone seems well trained and helpful. Could ask for nicer employees to everyone. They have gone the extra mile for us.

I am not sure what comes with the room charge because "care fee" is outrageous once they have your loved one in their facility. The current care fee is going up by 296%. Who can afford that kind of increase? The company Arrow Senior Living Management is all about the profits and not about the care of the residents. Their point system is out of wack and unfortunately it is legal for them to do it. There is not cap on how much they can charge. The assessments are done every 3 months so watch for your invoices to rise for things that should be included in room rates over [removed] a month.

Many of the staff are friendly and caring, however the executive team is a challenge and communication is poor with slow response time.

It's important to note that my loved one doesn't like it here, but he wouldn't like it anywhere. From his point of view, it'd be a completely different perspective from mine because he doesn't want to be there, but knows he can't be at home. So he's unhappy with a lot of things. For example: the activities - I know they have them and they offer them, but he wont initiate or engage in them. He hasn't experienced them because he doesn't want to, even though we try to encourage him to do so. With the dining experience: they offer round the clock food with different items and three meals a day, but he only goes down for lunch although we try to encourage him to go down more often. But because he won't, we bring him extra food. He's not utilizing a lot of the services, so it's not as bad as what it may seem to be in his eyes. He has troubles speaking up in regards to care services, but from what I've seen they try to do things for him. Another example: he stopped physical therapy because his arms were hurting, but most times you have to build muscle which can result in soreness. So the perspective behind it is that unfortunately my loved one would not be happy anywhere. I know that right now every industry & staffing is an issue. What I've seen is a lot of different staff coming and going with Rock Creek and with that, there are some things that haven't been done. It appears to me that they are trying. The staff issue is noticeable, especially in his case. He really liked one lady and so did I, she was fantastic, but she left. There have been a string of people that have left including directors. There's been three directors since November. There are inconsistencies in the staffing area. There's no chef, but the times I've experienced the meals it hasn't been that bad. There have still been inconsistencies, as other residents there have mentioned that it's not the best. My loved one doesn't take full advantage, but some of the menu items and combinations have been a little questionable. For example: they had a July 4th party where they served hot dogs with beans. Staffing I think is an issue as people need more help, but when you have staff coming and going there are going to be inconsistencies. Although my loved one doesn't participate, as I walk through I've noticed that there are activities always going on. They have bingo, Uno, a lounge area, a workout area, and a garden. The medical at this point is great. He fell one time and had to go to the emergency room; they were right on top of that and made sure he got there. They recognized the fact that he had an infection gong on, so the medical staff seem to be on board and they know what's going on. The other day he made a comment and the head nurse and / or medical director came to him to clarify some things. So I think the medial staff does a pretty good job. One thing we were originally told from the Assisted Living Director, who is no longer there, was that a nurse practitioner would be there every month and that does happen; but we were also told that he would be able to see a Doctor once every six months. He hasn't seen a Doctor yet and it's been past that. I'm unsure if that was a misunderstanding or if its supposed to be included - but I think it'd be nice to have a Doctor who could come and speak with the residents. Rock Creek Senior Living is a nice facility and it's in a nice area. I picked my loved one's apartment which overlooks a greenery of trees and a creek. Some people don't always have that option, some people face the parking lot, so that aspect of it makes it a pretty nice place. It's located in a nice clean part of town. I also think it's great that they work in conjunction with the hospice service, whether it's immediate or a long-term event. That's a nice feature that the residents don't have to leave the community. The fact that they work hand in hand with a hospice service is a nice surprise for us.

My mother at age 96 reluctantly agreed to move out of the condominium she occupied for 32 years. My wife and I visited the senior living options in Ankeny where we live. There was no facility that had a small one room for Independent living with options to add services as needed. RC is like a family resort where approximately 60 residents live in a wide variety of rooms. Her rent has not been raised after a year and with three added services, her rent is still less than $3,000. Because of the size of RC, it is possible for the nurses and staff members get to know each resident. If my mother should need assisted living , she could stay in her current room. Full memory care is also available on a different floor with full 24/7 nursing care. Visitors quickly see why we have selected Rock Creek Ankeny.

This is a very nice community. It is conveniently located to family to visit our loved one. The people are very friendly here. The communication with the staff is good. The only concern I would have is that I couldn't find anyone on the overnight shift to let them know what they needed to change for my loved one after a hospital visit. Overall, I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones.

We were very impressed with the facility, the meals and dining services was excellent and the staff members were super nice. They were super good about signing all the papers and explaining all the care that was going to be given to our loved one - however once our loved one moved in it was nothing that we expected. Our loved one was supposed to go on walks twice a day and they did not do that. There was supposed to be someone there every time our loved one bathed and no one was ever there. There was supposed to be someone to change their leg bandages daily and during the weekends that did not happen.

Response from Rock Creek Senior Living
May 24, 2022Thank you for sharing your experience, Sheila. Rock Creek strives to provide exceptional senior living for residents. As such, we encourage you to call the Executive Assistant to the CEO at 1-800-983-8876 x8960 to provide feedback and ensure that we address any areas of concern.
Prior to the Rock Creek purchase of Journey Senior Living I gave a great review. Today I gave 30 day notice to terminate. Communication is sub standard. Meals are questionable and rates go up every month. Rooms weren’t cleaned weekly over this past winter. If you want to see a calendar of activities, let me know—they don’t offer what they claim. Sorry my loved one deserves more. They did do a great job protecting from Covid.

A Place for Mom has scored Rock Creek Senior Living 8.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.
Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
