The positives are: Cleanliness Very good food Beautiful facility including spacious rooms, along with a secured courtyard and three sunrooms. Holiday dinners and seasonal activities set up for residents and families Negatives: High turnover rate of aides Lack of training results in falls, lack of consistent hydration, absence of important charting ie sleep schedule, food intake, bowel movements, etc Lack of Director of nursing >6 months. Typically only LPNs along with exception of one RN in staff currently Lack of supervision of residents. Not always an aide or nurse with eyes on residents

They had structural issues where every time it rained the floors would flood with water and that happened a lot. That was the main negative of the experience and my mom's feet would get wet constantly. The care and activities were good and mom liked it there in spite of her apprehensions of being in a home.

We are so happy with the care and attention my mom is getting from North Woods! We could not have asked for a better place for her to be and are glad we moved her out of where she was previously. The management team keeps us informed about any concerns and works with us to help us understand the progression of mom's health care needs. The food is fantastic, and mom is loving all the activities they have going on. we have visited several times and it is always clean, smells good and staff very friendly.

Response from North Woods Village of Kalamazoo
August 21, 2024Thank you for sharing your mom's positive experience with North Woods!
I was there earlier this week and found it to be exactly what I was looking for. I met with the executive director who spent a lot of time with me explaining exactly how they will care for my sisters and their approach. It is refreshing to find a place that actually knows how to handle individuals with memory problems who are physically active. The apartments are very roomy and their neighborhood will be perfect for her. I was able to see some activities going on too which was nice. the building looked and smelled very clean.

Response from North Woods Village of Kalamazoo
July 29, 2024Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us. We appreciate you taking the time to help others better understand the benefits at North Woods Village.
We ended up feeling very letdown with our experience at Northwoods. We moved my mom about six weeks ago to a different facility because we couldn't get resolution with any of our concerns. The management is terrible about communicating with families, they would run out of medication for my mother on a regular basis or I would find her meds on the floor in her room. They did not give her consistent showers or change her bedding or clean her room as promised. They increased her rent, saying that she had an increased level of care and required toileting, but I saw more evidence that she was not being toileted regularly by the staff . I visited almost daily, so these are things that I witnessed myself. Many of the caregivers were very kind and loving to my mother, but they were severely understaffed, unappreciated, and did not have the support they needed to do their jobs adequately. They also did not have consistency in their management and many staff quit or were fired so they were big lapses in services and communication. The administrator [name removed] promised that things were going to improve but I saw no evidence of that over the two years My mother lived there.

It is big and beautiful to look at.But this expereince we had is the good & bad.I hope this help the next person looking or improves Northwood in these areas. The staff is cna s and Lpn are for the most part nice. But, thye care is great for anyone thats self care. They do not help dress or clean patients. The meals are fairly good, It is clean in the lobby and halls. But they dont clean your room very of often. You provide all your needs toilet paper, towels depends. Some time is seems like a extreme nice pricey motel. It 8,000 over more. Kinda pricey for lack of helping pts and answering the lights. The activities are good, music, excerise, trivago and Bingo and movies,The activity are good. There is a barber shop. All summed up my biggest problem is the 1 on 1 care from aides to help with personal care in the home. That is WHY they are they are there

My mother has been at North Woods Village for over a year now and has consistently received outstanding care. I am in awe of the staff and how much they care for all the "friends" that live there. They are very knowledgeable on caring for memory care patients and show such love for them all. I can't speak highly enough of our experience with them. I thank God for all of them every day.

Response from North Woods Village of Kalamazoo
May 31, 2024Thank you very much for taking the time to share your positive feedback! We greatly appreciate it.
My Mom has been in this facility for a year now and absolutely nothing positive has come out of this place. More bruises than I can possibly log, a dislocated shoulder, UTI's every month, clothing missing and/or bleached, resident marinating in soiled diapers, hair not brushed/combed and the list goes on. Incredibly short-staffed. Residents are allowed to walk in & out of other rooms without supervision. They can't seem to keep employees. It has become a revolving door. Management is incompetent, rude and incredibly unprofessional. Almost ALL the positive reviews on their website comes from their own employees.....imagine that. Hmmmm.

Response from North Woods Village of Kalamazoo
March 13, 2024While we respect the fact you may have concerns for your mother, we unfortunately are very limited in our ability to respond to you due to the court ordered ban brought against you by your siblings. Since the ban restricts your access to your mother and her care, we have confirmed with your siblings, who the court has established as her legal guardians, that we are continuing to meet their expectations for the care and services we are providing to your mom.
We chose it because it was clean, convenient location, excellent set up with hallway that never ends (circle) so perfect for my loved one who walks, pretty courtyard, and nice staff. While I think there is room for improvement, ie. more activities, more consistent aid with helping my loved one get dressed into clean clothes, closer eye on making sure prn anxiety meds aren't needed for restlessness.

North Woods has been a life saver for our family and based on the experience we have had we would absolutely recommend them to other families. They have a ton of different activities going on, a lot of variety and appropriate activities. The staff are just amazing, and there are a ton of them that pay close attention to the residents.

I can't say enough good about this community. Anytime that I email the administrator I know that I will be hearing back from her within 8 hours. The staff bend over backwards to assist the residents with their needs. Everyone is so friendly and get to know the family along with the resident. They do a pheromonal job at caring for the residents. The chef called me to ask me about what my loved one would like to eat to make sure that my loved one would eat what she enjoyed. All the staff have been helpful, and make sure that my loved one's needs are being met. My loved one's rooms is cleaned up every day and they do a deep clean once every two weeks.

It does not look like a nursing home, it looks more like a hotel. It is really nice and has a great atmosphere.

They have enough staff and I feel like my loved one is well taken care of. I feel like anyone who came here would be pleased with the love and care that I see provided for my loved one. We came from another community and this one is completely different from what we dealt with.

We chose North Woods Village because we were in an emergency situation and they were pleasant and easy to work with. My mom is religious and they have a very nice chapel with services provided. They offer both shared and private rooms, she has the smallest private room and it is fine for what she needs. The staff is very nice and caring, they always have an answer for your questions. I would definitely recommend to others looking.

North Woods Village is superb. I cannot recommend it enough to anyone that is looking. The staff members are so caring and kind and it is the best place that I have ever been. Everybody from the director down to the janitor is amazing. I want them to get all of the credit they deserve, no one would be sorry taking their loved one here.

My sister [name removed] is a resident. I have been impressed with the cleanliness and layout of this community. Easy for residents to be in living area and participate in activities and eating areas. [name removed] looks good when I visit. Her room and bathroom are in good order. I miss visiting here during COVID-19 and look forward to better days ahead. Window visits have helped.

Attractive, inviting accommodations for residents. Everything is very clean and well cared for! Activities and visitations interviewed by COVID-19 otherwise North Woods has a good variety of staff-led things "going on." My wife was at North Woods for over one year. And well pleased!
